The latest installment of the Lone Star Showdown proved a wild affair Friday as Texas softball edged rival Texas A&M 9-8 in the first game of a three-game series at McCombs Field in Austin.
ShortstopΒ Viviana MartinezΒ led the way for No. 1 Texas (30-1, 7-0 SEC) with four hits, four RBIs and two home runs. She also scored the winning run after freshman designated player Hannah WellsΒ laced a walk-off RBI single into the outfield in the bottom of the seventh inning. The nearly three-hour game featured four ties, five lead changes and a combined 14 strikeouts and 23 hits before the Longhorns extended their school-record winning streak to 28 games. The loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the No. 16 Aggies (23-10, 5-2).
