Pirates star Konnor Griffin contract details, guaranteed money revealed

The Pittsburgh Pirates are thrilled by what they’ve seen in the early days of Konnor Griffin’s MLB career, and the NL Central team is showing their support with a major contract.

The 19-year-old shortstop is taking the league by storm after an impressive debut last week that included a memorable first at-bat. Griffin’s first plate appearance resulted in an RBI double that showcases his strong swing.

Meanwhile, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan reveals that the Pirates are going all-in on their elite prospect just several games into the 2026 season. Griffin is earning roughly $140 million after agreeing to Pittsburgh’s nine-year contract extension.

Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin and the Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement on a nine-year extension, the team announced, locking up the top prospect in baseball less than a week after his major league debut.

The first-year star is solidified as the top prospect in baseball at the moment. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh’s commitment to Griffin proves just how special a player they believe he can be.

Griffin’s deal is the largest guaranteed signing in franchise history, per Passan. The fact that he’s only a rookie makes their generous offer that much more intriguing.

Many Pirates fans are hopeful that their young shortstop can be another valuable asset to keep star pitcher Paul Skenes happy. However, rumblings over the past year indicate that Skenes could be exploring other MLB teams in the near future.

Skenes recently raved about Griffin’s professionalism and the fact that he doesn’t operate similarly to other teenagers. In fact, the Team USA pitcher even praised Griffin for his religious beliefs and the fact that he’s married at a young age.

The 19 year old married his high school sweetheart in January during the lead up to his debut MLB season.

Griffin contract details, guaranteed money

The Pirates’ announced deal to Griffin is nine years for $140 million. For perspective, Skenes is only making roughly $1 million during the 2026 season.

Griffin is considered a cornerstone piece for the franchise given Pittsburgh’s commitment through the 2034 season.

Bryan Reynolds holds the largest contract on the Pirates’ payroll outside of Griffin’s extension. Reynolds signed an eight-year contract worth nearly $106 million back in 2023.
