All-Star Gabby Williams joins Golden State Valkyries on multiyear deal in Day 2 of WNBA free agency

All-Star Gabby Williams signed a multiyear deal with Golden State, the Valkyries announced Sunday.

Williams averaged a career-high 11.6 points and 4.2 assists and led the league in steals with 2.3 per game for Seattle last season. That effort earned the 29-year-old an All-Star appearance for the first time in her career. She also was a member of the league's All-Defensive First Team.

β€œFor a player of Gabby’s caliber to choose us in just our second year ... means everything,” Valkyries general manager Ohemaa Nyanin said in a statement. β€œShe is world-class. One of the best defenders in the world, a WNBA All-Star, and someone who makes everyone around her better.”

The Valkyries had a stellar season in their first year, making the playoffs β€” the first time an expansion team had done that. Williams was drafted fourth by Chicago in 2018 and traded to Los Angeles in 2021. She didn't play any games for the Sparks before being traded to Seattle in 2022.

Other moves on Sunday included Sophie Cunningham re-signing with the Indiana Fever. Cunningham averaged 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds in 30 games before suffering a season-ending MCL tear in her right knee in August.

She joins Kelsey Mitchell and Lexie Hull, who announced on Saturday they were returning to the team. Indiana also added Monique Billings in the first day of free agency.

The Toronto Tempo added forward Isabelle Harrison, whom Sandy Brondello coached in New York before making the move to Canada.

Atlanta Dream re-signing Allisha Gray, Brionna Jones and Naz Hillmon, AP source says

The Atlanta Dream are bringing back Allisha Gray, Brionna Jones and Naz Hillmon, all of whom have agreed to deals, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The person spoke to The Associated Press Friday night on condition of anonymity because contracts can't be signed until Saturday.

Gray averaged 18.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.0 assists to earn first team all-WNBA honors last season for the first time in her career. She finished fourth in MVP voting.

The 31-year-old Gray was the Rookie of the Year in 2017 and is a three-time All-Star.

Jones averaged 12.8 points and 7.3 rebounds last year in her first season with the Dream after playing her first eight years with Connecticut. The 30-year-old suffered a meniscus tear in late January while playing for a club in the Czech Republic, but is expected to be back in time for the start of the season.

Hillmon earned Sixth Woman of the Year honors last season after she averaged a career-best 8.6 pints, 6.2 rebounds and 2.4 assists.

ESPN was the first to report the deals.

It's been a productive week for the Dream, who acquired young star Angel Reese from the Chicago Sky on Monday. The team is also expected to re-sign Rhyne Howard and Jordin Canada.

This has been a busy offseason since the league and the players’ union signed a transformational labor deal that saw average salaries rise nearly fourfold. Players can earn over $1 million annually for the first time in league history, which is more than four times the previous maximum salary. More than 80% of players in the league are free agents.

Nneka Ogwumike to return to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she spent first 12 years of her career

Nneka Ogwumike is headed back to the Los Angeles Sparks.

Ogwumike spent the first 12 seasons of her career in Los Angeles after she was drafted No. 1 by the team in 2012. She won the MVP in 2016 and helped the franchise win the WNBA championship that season.

The veteran forward posted on social media a 45-second video that showed her intentions to return to the Sparks, which her agent confirmed was accurate. Free agents can't sign until Saturday.

β€œIt was always see you later, now I’ll see you soon…” Ogwumike wrote in the post. The video showed highlights of her time in Los Angeles.

The 35-year-old Ogwumike averaged 18.3 points and 7.0 rebounds for Seattle last season β€” her second with the Storm.

It's been a busy offseason for Ogwumike. She presided over collective bargaining negotiations as president of the union and helped get a transformational new deal that saw average salaries rise nearly four-times what they were in the previous CBA.

The Sparks have a talented group to go with Ogwumike as the team gave the franchise tag to guard Kelsey Plum, who is also on the union's executive committee, as well as young star Cameron Brink.

This is the busiest offseason in WNBA history with 80% of the players in the league being free agents.
