No frontrunner yet in the NIU quarterback competiton
DEKALB, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) β With a new interim head coach and a lot of roster turnover from the portal, NIUβs football team will have a lot of question marks going into camp later this summer. One of the biggest ones will be, who will be the starting quarterback?
This past Saturday in the Huskies spring scrimmage, four quarterbacks took snapsβ¦returning sophomore Ben Davidson, true freshman Bryshawn Brown, University of Charleston transfer Ian Hamric and returning senior Jalen Macon.
Macon is likely the favorite to win the starting job, but coach Rober Harley isnβt ready to proclaim anyone of them a favorite or a frontrunner right now.
βI would say no right now. You know, obviously each one of these (practices/scrimmages) is, a moment to see (them perform). Obviously for each one of them, decision-making is paramount and the premium that you need at quarterback. We need to take care of the football. We need to make great decisions, even if that means throw it away or punt.β
One player on defense who caught my eye Saturday was Redshirt junior defensive end James Bradley. He is long and rangy at 6β5. He showed excellent quickness. He reminded me of a couple Huskies on defense from last year, Roy Williams and Jalonnie Williams. Bradley is a transfer from Mississippi Valley State.
