Storm's Jade Melbourne chips front tooth diving for loose ball vs. Valkyries

If anyone wanted to doubt the toughness of WNBA players, the Seattle Storm’s Jade Melbourne has something to say about that.

During the second quarter of Seattle’s season opener versus the Golden State Valkyries, Melbourne dove for a loose ball after knocking it away from Veronica Burton. Unfortunately for Melbourne, Burton landed right on top of her, forcing her face into the court and chipping her tooth.

Melbourne didn’t stay down on the court while covering her mouth. She picked up the tooth, handed it to an athletic trainer and stayed in the game. The fourth-year guard didn’t go to the bench or the locker room despite resembling Jack Hughes during Team USA’s gold medal hockey game versus Canada.

After chipping that tooth, Melbourne was also whistled for a personal foul on Burton for the play.

The guard led Seattle with 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting (including 2-for-3 on 3-pointers) at halftime as the Storm trailed the Valkyries, 49-41.

Knicks take 3-0 series lead over 76ers as New York fans cheer on 108-94 win in Philadelphia

The New York Knicks took an insurmountable 3-0 series lead in their NBA playoff matchup with the Philadelphia 76ers, winning 108-94.

Jalen Brunson scored 33 points and dished out nine assists. Mikal Bridges added 23 points with Josh Hart notching 12 to give the “Nova Knicks” 68 combined points in Philadelphia. The Knicks’ bench also outscored the Sixers’ reserves 28-11, led by 15 from Landry Shamet.

New York played without OG Anunoby, who was sidelined with a right hamstring strain sustained in Game 3.

Despite pleas from Joel Embiid and the best efforts of the 76ers’ ticket office, plenty of Knicks fans — including celebrity supporters Spike Lee, Tracy Morgan, Timothee Chalamet, Ben Stiller and Fat Joe — populated Xfinity Mobile Arena and provided loud support for the road team. Once again, the Sixers’ home court sounded like Madison Square Garden East.

Embiid returned to the Sixers’ lineup after missing Wednesday’s Game 2 loss. He tussled early on with Karl-Anthony Towns in the post, though the Knicks center pulled Embiid toward the perimeter to create lanes to the basket and offensive-rebound opportunities. Sixers coach Nick Nurse adjusted by putting Dominick Barlow on Towns, allowing Embiid to roam near the basket for rim protection and rebounding.

But Towns still grappled with Embiid while playing defense and the two fell to the floor at least two times while fighting for position. That got Towns into foul trouble, putting him on the bench with three personal fouls as eight minutes remained before halftime.

Knicks took control in second quarter

The 8:20 mark of the second quarter is also when the Knicks took their first lead of the game on a 3-pointer from Jose Alvarado putting them ahead, 38-35. That was part of an 11-3 run that included a ferocious poster dunk by Mitchell Robinson over Embiid on a lob from Brunson. Eventually, the Knicks outscored the Sixers 26-7 to take a 54-42 lead.

Paul George got off to a scorching start, shooting 6-for-9 in the first quarter and hitting 3-of-4 3-pointers for 15 points. Yet he went scoreless in the second quarter as the Knicks surged ahead. And he showed zero defensive effort after his bad pass was picked off by Bridges for a fast-break layup.

George went scoreless in the second half, missing his last nine shots. Kelly Oubre Jr. led the 76ers with 22 points and eight rebounds, followed by 18 points, six boards and five assists from Embiid. Tyrese Maxey finished with 17 points.

The Knicks got a surprising spark off the bench late in the first quarter and midway through the second with nine points from Shamet, who hit four of his first five shots. That led to New York’s bench outscoring Philadelphia’s 16-0 in the second quarter.

Kelly Oubre Jr. hit a Kawhi Leonard-like 3-pointer from the wing as time expired to cut the Knicks’ halftime lead to 60-52. But despite the score, New York seized control on the court and in the crowd, not letting go on either front.

Philadelphia cut the Knicks’ lead to 78-76 with 2:28 in the third quarter, helped in part by frequently fouling Robinson and hoping he would miss free throws. However, the reserve center somewhat negated that strategy by swishing four of his eight attempts. New York built its lead back up to six points at the free-throw line before Shamet knocked down a 3 to give the Knicks a nine-point advantage heading into the final 12 minutes.

Game 4 is scheduled for Sunday with tip-off at 3:30 p.m. ET. An NBA team has never recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series, going 0-159. Only four teams have even forced a Game 7, and they also lost the series.

Some might raise an eyebrow at Vince Carter representing the Nets as a team legend. However, among the eight teams he played for during his Hall of Fame career, his second-longest stint was with the Nets, who were located in New Jersey during his five seasons with the team.

Carter also averaged 23.6 points per game in New Jersey, just higher than the 23.4 he averaged for the Toronto Raptors.

Other former greats representing their teams include Rolando Blackman, who played 11 of his 13 NBA seasons with the Mavericks. His 16,643 points are the second-most in team history and his career average of 19.2 points per game ranks ninth. John Wall played nine of his 11 seasons with the Washington Wizards. He ranks fourth in franchise history with 10,879 points.

Though he has a front-office title with the Heat,Alonzo Mourning could be considered a team legend. He played 11 of his 15 NBA seasons in two stints with the team and his 9,459 points rank third in team history.

And for those wondering or don’t remember her representing the Bucks at the 2014 Draft Lottery, Mallory Edens is the daughter of team co-owner Wes Edens. Milwaukee won the No. 2 overall selection that year and picked Duke forward Jabari Parker.
