The Vikings will be interviewing someone very high up in the Lions’ front office for their FM job

This one felt like a forgone conclusion for the Detroit Lions. When the Minnesota Vikings fired Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in January, you had to know at some point they would look to interview someone from the Lions and any/or of their NFC North rivals.

The Vikings have requested to interview Lions’ assistant GM Ray Agnew for their GM job

The Vikings requested interviews with Lions assistant GM Ray Agnew, Broncos assistant GM Reed Burckhardt and Dolphins assistant GM Kyle Smith for their general manager job, sources say.

Minnesota's initial round of virtual interviews is underway and the list has now expanded.

It's actually pretty crazy that Agnew is not already a general manager somewhere. This is a person who has been a significant contributor to building two of the best programs in the league. He was the Rams' director of pro personnel on their ascent to two Super Bowl appearances and one win. Yes, he was in Detroit in 2021 when the Rams got that win, but his fingerprints were all over it. As was Brad Holmes'

In Detroit, he's helped Holmes scout and build the team you see today. The Lions have gone from one of the worst franchises in the league to perennial Super Bowl contenders. Yes, they're still that, even though this is a "the sky is falling" week for Lions fans.

Despite all of that, this is the first reported interview request we’ve seen for Agnew, and it makes no sense at all. The only potential excuse is that he's older than most GMs, and when you look at who's been getting hired, it's usually these young hot shots who have been working their way up the ladder. Still, that's pretty ridiculous.

The Vikings are casting a pretty wide net, so we’ll see what happens in due time. They’re probably not going to make a decision until later in the month or in June. If Agnew is gone, that’s a big loss for Detroit.
