Diamondbacks dealt major injury blow with former Cy Young award winner
The Arizona Diamondbacks received troubling news this week regarding one of the best pitchers in MLB and most important pitchers in their organization. Former National League Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes has suffered a lat strain during his recovery from Tommy John surgery, pushing back his anticipated return timeline and creating new uncertainty for Arizonaβs playoff hopes. Burnes was originally expected to return sometime during the second half of the season and potentially provide a major boost down the stretch. Now, that plan appears to be in jeopardy.

Recovery Timeline Takes a Significant Hit
Burnes has spent much of the past year rehabbing after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and the Diamondbacks had been optimistic that he could contribute before the regular season ended. The latest setback changes that outlook considerably.
With the lat strain delaying his progression, Burnes is now expected to remain sidelined until at least September. Even if his recovery goes perfectly from this point forward, the veteran right-hander may only have enough time for two or three starts before the regular season concludes.
That is a far different scenario than the one Arizona envisioned a few months ago.
Diamondbacks Were Counting on Burnes
When Arizona signed Burnes to a massive contract before the 2025 season, the expectation was that he would anchor the rotation for years to come.
Although the organization knew patience would be required after Tommy John surgery, there was hope that Burnes could return in time to help during a postseason push this year.
Now, there is no guarantee that it will happen. Even if he returns in September, the Diamondbacks would likely have to manage his workload carefully, limiting the impact he could make during the most important games of the season.
Trade Deadline Plans May Change
The timing of the injury news is especially important because Arizona remains firmly in the playoff race. Front-office executives now have less certainty about receiving meaningful contributions from Burnes this season. As a result, the Diamondbacks may be forced to become more aggressive ahead of the trade deadline.
Adding another starting pitcher could suddenly become a priority. Arizona still has postseason aspirations, but this latest setback makes the road considerably more difficult. For now, the Diamondbacks can only hope Burnes avoids additional setbacks and finds a way back to the mound before the season ends.
