The NFL is quickly approaching training camp, and the preseason will soon get underway. Multiple teams have key position battles ahead of the season, including some at quarterback. One retired quarterback, however, has kept the door open for a potential return in 2026.

Former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has previously stated that he would come out of retirement for the right situation. He recently appeared on Good Morning Football and revealed that several teams have checked in with him.

“There were multiple teams that reached out to me this offseason. I won’t say who or how, but they reached out and was just gauging my interest on what I wanted to do. They were good, solid football teams,” Carr said.

“If I were to do it, it would have to be a special team that maybe lost somebody or needed somebody, but even then, it’s not guaranteed.”

Carr has made it clear that he will not come out of retirement unless he has a legitimate opportunity to compete for a championship. He retired last offseason after doctors discovered a career-threatening shoulder injury that required surgical repair.

The decision came as a surprise, considering Carr was only 34 years old at the time. Now 35, Carr could still have several seasons left if he is able to remain healthy.

Any team that has checked in with Carr would likely need to evaluate how his shoulder has recovered. While 35 is not considered old for an NFL quarterback in today’s game, age becomes a bigger factor when combined with a significant injury history.

When healthy, Carr proved he could be a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL. Despite playing for several struggling Raiders teams, he put together a solid career. Carr’s time in Las Vegas ended when the Raiders released him following the 2022 season. He later signed with the New Orleans Saints, who still hold his contract rights.

If a team decides to pursue Carr, it would likely need to acquire him via trade. Given his age, injury history, and current contract situation, the compensation would probably be minimal. Carr could potentially be moved for a conditional sixth- or seventh-round pick, depending on the circumstances.

For now, Carr remains retired. The only thing that would change that is the right opportunity — what he has described as a perfect situation.
