WWE 'Raw': CM Punk becomes WWE Champion
July 7 (UPI) -- CM Punk, in a crazy turn of events, became the new Undisputed WWE Champion after facing Sami Zayn in the main event of Raw.
Zayn, who had just captured the Undisputed WWE Championship last week at Night of Champions, was originally scheduled to defend his title against Cody Rhodes on Monday.
Rhodes' rival Gunther had other plans, however, and brutally assaulted The American Nightmare backstage at the start of Raw.
Rhodes had a war of words with Zayn before Gunther suddenly appeared and performed a Powerbomb on Rhodes that sent him through a table. Gunther later kicked a car door into Rhodes' head.
Punk was then later put in Rhodes' place and faced Zayn in the main event. Raw was taking place from Punk's hometown of Chicago.
Zayn and Punk had a highly-competitive match that saw Zayn grow with frustration after he couldn't keep his opponent down.
Zayn copied Punk's move the GTS but it wasn't enough. Punk later dodged a Helluva Kick from Zayn and then performed the move himself for revenge. Punk then landed his own GTS to earn the three count and become the new Undisputed WWE Championship.
Punk was last seen at WrestleMania 42 in April when he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns.
Punk will now head to SmackDown with the blue brand's Undisputed WWE Championship while Reigns remains on Raw with the red brand's World Heavyweight Championship.
