Dodgers’ Max Muncy Comments on Odd Coincidence With A’s Third Baseman
Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy faced a same-named player in LA’s win over the Athletics on Monday.
In Monday’s contest, both teams had a player named Max Muncy batting seventh and playing third base. The duo also share the same birthday—though they’re 12 years separated in age—and got drafted by the same team.
MLB’s first Max Muncy got the better of his younger counterpart in Monday’s matchup, going 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs and a run in the Dodgers’ 9-4 win. That’s not to say his opponent didn’t do well, though, as he went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run on the evening.
“It’s a little weird,” the Dodgers’ Muncy said. “It’s a strange feeling standing at third base and they’re announcing that you’re hitting and it’s not you. Thankfully, it’s just a couple games, because I don’t know if I would ever get used to it.”
This wasn’t the first time the two had played each other, as the elder Max Muncy made a trip to the minors last season for a rehab assignment while the younger Max Muncy was in Las Vegas. According to the younger Muncy, he has kept a close eye on his predecessor’s career—though not of his own will.
“When he was in college at Baylor, my grandparents found him and they’re like, ‘Oh, there’s another baseball player,’” Muncy said. “I knew when he got drafted. I knew when he was with the A’s. I knew when they let him go and the Dodgers picked him up. All the transactions, I had known because every time I went over to my grandparents’ house they would keep me updated.”
According to MLB.com’s Martin Gallegos, the Dodgers’ Muncy is following the second-year infielder as well.
“He’s a great kid,” the former Athletic said. “His career is off to a great start. So, obviously, I’m rooting for him.
How Have the Max Muncys Performed This Year?
Dodgers Max Muncy
The Dodgers’ Muncy is having a great season in 2026, and is the favorite to start the All-Star Game at third base for the National League. He has 17 homers and 37 RBIs on the year, posting an .873 OPS over the course of 79 games.
Muncy hasn’t made an All-Star Game since the 2021 season, and is on pace for his best OPS in a calendar year since then as well. His OPS and home runs both rank second on the team, trailing only Shohei Ohtani.
A’s Max Muncy
The A’s’ Max Muncy got off to a strong start to 2026 after a red-hot spring training, but hasn’t performed as well since a fracture in his hand took him out of play for a month. Over the course of the year, the 23-year-old infielder has five homers with 20 RBIs, posting an OPS just above .700 through 43 games played.
The two will likely face off once again in Tuesday’s matchup, which kicks off at 6:40 p.m. PT.
