Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 might use thicker UTG for durable, crease-free screen

Samsung might launch the Galaxy Z Fold 9 with a thicker Ultra Thin Glass (UTG). The company is reportedly testing a 60-micrometer-thick UTG, which could initially ship with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 launches next month.

If the Wide Fold lands well, the 60-micrometer UTG is likely to be approved for the Galaxy Z Fold 9 next year. This will be a crucial model that could be the first from Samsung after the debut of Apple’s foldable iPhone Ultra.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide Fold), the passport-shaped third foldable in this year’s lineup, may ship with Ultra Thin Glass measuring around 60 micrometers thick. Thicker glass means a less visible crease and better resistance to drops.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra (Fold 7 sequel) sticks with 45 micrometers, the same spec Samsung applied to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year. It seems Samsung is treating the Wide Fold model as a controlled experiment.

Back in 2024, the Z Fold 6 shipped with 30-micrometer UTG. The Z Fold SE later that year corrected course with 45 micrometers, and Samsung held that line through the Fold 7.

Samsung’s shipment target for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide sits at roughly 1.5 to 2 million units by year’s end, modest but meaningful. The Fold 8 Ultra carries the heavier sales expectation, somewhere between 2 and 2.5 million units.

The Korean tech giant may hold an Unpacked event on July 22 in South Korea. The event would happen in London, rather than a US or Korean city.
