“Cruz Delivered the Higher Peak”: PFF Ranks Victor Cruz as the Best Slot WR For the New York Giants Over the Last 20 Years

The New York Giants have had some big named wide receivers over the last 20 seasons on the roster. Plaxico Burress, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Victor Cruz, Odell Beckham Jr., Sterling Shepard, and Malik Nabers are some noticeable wide receivers that have played for this franchise. Burress was on the team that won the Super Bowl during the 2007 season and Cruz, Manningham, and Nicks were on the team that won the Super Bowl during the 2011 season.

Nathan Jahnke of profootballfocus.com created a starting roster of the Giants best players over the last 20 seasons. At the outside wide receiver spots, he has Nicks and Beckham Jr. as the starting wide receivers. Who did Jahnke list as the best slot receiver for New York over the last 20 seasons?

Jahnke was debating between Cruz and Shepard in who has been the best slot wide receiver for the Giants over the past 20 years. He thinks that edge belongs to Cruz. Jahnke said,

“The slot receiver spot produced a similarly close debate between Victor Cruz and Sterling Shepard. Cruz delivered the higher peak, highlighted by his standout 2011-13 stretch, while Shepard compiled a larger body of quality play across more seasons. In this case, Cruz’s peak performance was enough to earn the nod.”

When the Giants won the Super Bowl in 2011, Cruz caught 82 passes for 1,536 yards receiving and nine touchdowns, along with averaging 18.7 yards per reception. Cruz was targeted 131 times that season. A lot of New York fans will remember the 99-yard touchdown he had against the New York Jets in Week 16 of the 2011 NFL season that jump started the Super Bowl run.

He played for the Giants from 2010-2016 but was injured for the entire 2015 NFL season. Cruz during his New York career caught 303 passes for 4,549 yards, and 25 touchdowns, along with averaging 15.0 yards per catch. He was targeted 509 times. Cruz and Eli Manning did have good chemistry for a few NFL seasons here.
