Angel Reese snubbing former LSU teammate during Dream vs. Storm was justified

The Saturday night contest between the Atlanta Dream and Seattle Storm amounted to a reunion between former LSU teammates Angel Reese and Flau’jae Johnson.

However, it wasn’t quite the reunion we were expecting when the two squared off for the first time in the WNBA.

Johnson, who entered the league as a first-round pick in 2026, was Reese’s teammate for two seasons with the Tigers before Reese left for the WNBA, but you would have never guessed that after Reese declined Johnson’s handshake.

With 1:20 left in the game, and with the Storm leading by 14, Johnson went up to Reese for a handshake, but Reese snubbed Johnson.

Why Reese snubbing Johnson was justified

Johnson was clearly taken aback by Reese’s response to her handshake, but we can’t say we blame the Dream star for doing what she did.

After all, the game wasn’t over yet. It would look weird for players from opposing teams to be shaking hands while the game is still going on — and that’s especially true with the Dream trailing and Johnson playing a huge role in that.

There’s plenty of time for handshakes after the game, and that’s when Johnson should have went up to Reese for the embrace.

Maybe there’s something deeper going on here, but that’s the best explanation we can come up with for why Reese snubbed Johnson, and it makes sense if that’s indeed the reason.

Reese had a strong game with 17 points and nine boards, but Johnson was better with a game-high 24 points to go along with 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals.

With the 105-90 loss to the Storm on Saturday, the Dream have now dropped three straight games as they head into a five-day break before a matchup against the Washington Mystics on Thursday, July 2.

Atlanta is tied for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference and sits in the No. 5 seed in the playoff hunt.

Meanwhile, the Storm improve to 5-15 on the season and have won two straight after losing a whopping 11 consecutive games. Seattle sits in dead-last in the Western Conference and sits half of a game better than the Connecticut Sun, who own the WNBA’s worst record.

Seattle will meet the Phoenix Mercury when it emerges from the break.
