Emma Navarro health issue is revealed at Wimbledon

Tennis fans know that Emma Navarro was dealing with health issues that kept her off the court for a few months.

It was serious enough to cause her to miss her home tournament, the Charleston Open.

Navarro won the Strousbourg Open and is battling at Wimbledon, at press time, against Marta Kostyuk. During ESPN’s coverage of that match, Navarro’s diagnosis was revealed by Chris McKendry.

Navarro has hypothryoidism

Hyopthyroidism is caused by an underactive thyroid.

Early symptoms can go unnoticed but over time, fatigue, depression, and weight gain are among the most prominent.

Though we do not know Navarro’s treatment, she is likely under the supervision of an endocrinologist who is montoring her bloodwork and using prescription medication to treat her.

Hypothyroidism is a life-long issue, occurs mainly in women, and medication and levels need to be closely monitored. It can morph into hyperthyroidism where the thyroid gland is overperforming. That provides opposite symptoms including rapid heartbeat, weight loss, and sleeplessness.

Navarro has learned to balance tennis and life

McKendry revealed that Navarro used the time off not only to heal her body, but also to learn how to balance life and tennis.

She rose in the rankings quickly after turning professional and was World No. 8 in 2024. With that success comes a lot of pressure for the former NCAA Champion out of the University of Virginia who is among the new generation of players playing some college tennis before turning pro.
