WhatsApp shares details on usernames and business IDs ahead of 2026 rollout

6 November 2025 at 20:44

WhatsApp is planning a big update in 2026 that will let people use usernames instead of phone numbers to connect. This means users can make calls, send messages, and start video chats without sharing their personal phone numbers. The feature is already being tested, and businesses are preparing for the change.

The username system is designed to make WhatsApp safer and more private. Each user will have a unique username that others can use to contact them. This allows people to connect easily while keeping their phone numbers hidden.

Along with usernames, WhatsApp is introducing a Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID). This is a special ID that lets businesses message users even if they don’t know their phone numbers.

The BSUID will appear in notifications and work with current and future versions of the WhatsApp Business API. Businesses can use this ID to manage chats, customer support, and automated messages while keeping users’ information private.

WhatsApp has asked businesses to update their systems by June 2026. Companies should check how they currently use phone numbers in their workflows, analytics, and customer support tools and make necessary updates.

Preparing early will ensure smooth communication when usernames and BSUIDs go live. Users can connect safely without sharing personal numbers, while businesses can build trust and engage more people.

By 2026, WhatsApp users will have more control over their personal information, and businesses will have new tools to communicate safely. Usernames and BSUIDs together promise a safer, simpler, and more flexible way to connect on WhatsApp.
