Jaylen Brown scores 33 as Celtics beat Mavs 110-100 despite Flagg's 36 points

DALLAS (AP) β€” Jaylen Brown had 33 points and 11 rebounds, and the Boston Celtics beat Dallas 110-100 on Tuesday night, overcoming another stellar showing from Cooper Flagg and handing the Mavericks their season-worst fifth consecutive loss.

Flagg scored 36 points in the rookie No. 1 pick's first meeting with the team he grew up watching because Boston was the closest NBA city to his hometown, about 200 miles south of Newport, Maine.

It was Flagg's third consecutive 30-point game, five nights after the 19-year-old set the NBA scoring record for a teenager with 49 against Charlotte. The former Duke standout had nine rebounds and six assists.

Payton Pritchard scored 26 points for the Celtics, who were playing without Anfernee Simons. Boston acquired Nikola Vucevic for Simons in a trade with Chicago earlier in the day, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

Luka Garza scored nine consecutive Boston points on 3-pointers during a 14-4 run that finished the third quarter and gave the Celtics an 86-67 lead. Garza made all four of his attempts from 3 and scored 16 points in 20 minutes.

Daniel Gafford had 10 points and 12 rebounds for the Mavericks despite aggravating a right ankle injury that has sidelined him for 16 games this season. Gafford exited in the second quarter but returned in the third.

Pritchard scored 15 points in the first half on 7-of-10 shooting, and the Celtics didn't trail again after Brown hit a tying 3-pointer and scored again from long range midway through the first quarter. Boston led by 23 points in the second half.

Caleb Martin scored 11 of his 13 points in the first half for Dallas.

Bo Horvat's 2nd goal of the game lifts the Islanders over the Penguins 5-4 in overtime

NEW YORK (AP) β€” Bo Horvat scored his second goal of the game 52 seconds into overtime and the New York Islanders beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Mathew Barzal had a goal and an assist, Ilya Sorokin made 31 saves and New York snapped its two-game skid. Matthew Schaefer and Ryan Pulock also scored for the Islanders.

Justin Brazeau had a goal and an assist for the Penguins, who dropped their second consecutive game. Anthony Mantha, Egor Chinakhov and Bryan Rust also scored. Stuart Skinner stopped 18 shots.

Horvat buried a breakaway in overtime to give the Islanders a critical victory in their second-to-last game prior to the Olympic break.

Barzal tied it at 3 midway through the third period, but Brazeau redirected a shot from Brett Kulak to put Pittsburgh ahead 4-3 with 9:20 remaining.

Pulock responded for the Islanders with less than six minutes left in the third to tie it again and force overtime.

Penguins captain Sidney Crosby corralled a loose puck behind the net and slid it to Rust, who fired a sharp-angled shot from behind the goal line that caught Sorokin off guard with under six minutes to play in the second.

Brazeau set up Mantha in the slot for the opening goal of the game at 12:09 of the first.

Horvat tied it with less than two minutes left in the period when he buried a rebound.

Schaefer, the 18-year-old rookie defenseman, fired a slap shot from the point in the closing seconds of the first to give the Islanders a 2-1 lead. It was his 16th goal.

Chinakhov evened the score at 2 early in the second off a feed from Tommy Novak.

Flyers snap losing streak with 4-2 win over Capitals

PHILADELPHIA (AP) β€” Jamie Drysdale scored on the power play to snap a 20-game streak without a goal, Dan Vladar made 26 saves, and the Philadelphia Flyers ended a four-game losing streak by beating the Washington Capitals 4-2 on Tuesday night.

Drysdale one-timed a pass from Trevor Zegras past Washington goalie Clay Stevenson to put the Flyers ahead to stay, 3-2.

Vladar kept the Flyers game, especially in the first period, stopping all 11 shots Washington fired at him in a period that was spent predominantly in the Flyers end.

He stopped a pair of one-timers by Alex Ovechkin from the high slot in the third period to keep the Flyers ahead. Ovechkin was trying to tie Sidney Crosby's record of 29 goals, most by a Philadelphia opponent in the 30-year history of Xfinity Mobile arena.

Owen Tippett gave the Flyers an early lead when he took a cross-ice pass from defenseman Travis Sanheim and made a deft forehand-to-backhand move to slide it past Stevenson, who had 18 saves.

Carl Grundstrom, who was a healthy scratch the previous two games, returned to the lineup and snapped a 13-game scoring drought when his shot caromed of the skate of Washington defenseman Jakob Chychrun to give the Flyers a two-goal lead in the second period.

Travis Konency had a pair of assists, marking his fourth straight multipoint game and his 15th this season.

Rasmus Ristolainen added an empty-net goal for his first of the season for Philadelphia. He also assisted on Grundstrom's goal.

Anthony Beauvillier had a goal and an assist and Aliaksei Protas scored a short-handed goal for Washington, which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) β€” Silas Demary Jr. had 17 points, Tarris Reed Jr. added 14 points, and Braylon Mullins had all 13 of his points in the first half as third-ranked UConn rolled to a 92-60 victory over Xavier on Tuesday night to remain perfect in Big East play.

Eric Reibe had 14 points and Jayden Ross had 11 points as UConn (22-1, 12-0) extended its winning streak to 18 games. It is the third-longest winning streak in UConn men's basketball history and the longest since the 1998-99 season. The 12-0 start in the Big East is the best since UConn's 1995-96 team won its first 14 conference games.

All Wright had 14 points while Roddie Anderson III and Malik Messina-Moore added 10 points each for Xavier (12-11, 4-8). Tre Carroll, the Big East’s leading scorer who averaged 26.4 points over his previous five games, was held to nine points.

Mullins had 10 of UConn's first 12 points as the Huskies raced to a 16-2 lead. UConn shot 61% in the first half to take a 50-22 lead at halftime. The 28-point halftime lead is the largest in conference play for UConn this season. The Huskies won consecutive conference games by more than 20 points for just the second time in the last 10 seasons.

Xavier showed signs of life with Anthony Robinson, Isaiah Walker and Anderson keying a 9-0 run, but that only cut UConn's lead to 25.

Ilya Mikheyev added a goal and three assists in Chicago's final home game before the Olympic break. Connor Bedard, Connor Murphy and Sam Rinzel also scored, and Spencer Knight made 25 saves.

The Blackhawks had lost five in a row. They improved to 3-6-2 in their last 11 games.

Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist for San Jose, which dropped to 1-2-1 on a five-game trip. Will Smith and Shakir Mukhamadullin also scored.

It was the second NHL meeting between Celebrini and Bedard, two of the league's biggest young stars. Bedard was the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, and Celebrini was the top selection the following year.

Chicago opened a 4-0 lead with three goals in the first part of the second period, highlighted by Donato's 12th of the season. The veteran forward made a nifty move on San Jose defenseman Vincent Desharnais before beating Yaroslav Askarov at 9:35.

San Jose closed to 5-3 on Mukhamadullin's slick backhand 2:13 into the third, but Donato knocked in a rebound for Chicago with 5:19 remaining.

The Blackhawks played without captain Nick Foligno, who missed his second straight game with a mid-body injury.

The 20-year-old Bedard scored for the third consecutive game when he converted a one-timer 7:00 into the first period. It was the team's first power-play goal since Jan. 10 at Nashville. It went 0 for 26 with the man advantage over the previous 10 games.

Bedard has 23 goals in 43 games, matching his career high in 82 games last season. He also has 21 career power-play goals, passing Patrick Kane for the most by a Blackhawks player before turning 21.

Bennett left the game after the first and did not return.

The Panthers scored 37 seconds in on a goal from Vilmanis, with Rodrigues making it 2-0 at 5:56 of the period.

Wembanyama fuels early surge in late start as Spurs overcome travel woes to beat Magic

SAN ANTONIO (AP) β€” Victor Wembanyama had 25 points, eight rebounds and five blocks and San Antonio beat the Orlando Magic 112-103 on Sunday night in a game that started five hours late because of the Spurs' travel woes.

The Spurs were scheduled to leave Charlotte following a 111-106 loss Saturday, but had to stay overnight because of the storm that dropped nearly a foot of snow. The team then had a mechanical issue on its flight.

Devin Vassell added 16 points for San Antonio. Dylan Harper had 15 points, and De'Aaron Fox had 14 points and 10 assists.

Desmond Bane scored 25 points for Orlando, and Paolo Banchero had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Orlando had won two in a row.

The Magic had been in San Antonio since Saturday after a 130-120 home victory over Toronto. The Spurs weren't so lucky.

The game was scheduled to start at 3 p.m. but was pushed back to 6 p.m. and then 8 p.m. as the Spurs returned home nearly 24 hours later than planned.

The delayed start did not hinder the Spurs as they made their first three shots and seven of their first eight in building a double-digit lead five minutes in, Wembanyama made his first two attempts, forcing his way past Wendell Carter Jr. in the lane for a finger-roll layup and a two-handed slam.

Wembanyama was cleared to play a half hour before tipoff after being questionable due to left calf soreness.

San Antonio guard Stephon Castle missed the game with left adductor tightness.

No. 19 Florida dominates paint, beats No. 23 Alabama 100-77 after Todd Golden's guarantee

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) β€” Alex Condon scored 25 points, Thomas Haugh added 22 and No. 19 Florida handled 23rd-ranked Alabama and Charles Bediako 100-77 on Sunday.

Florida’s fifth consecutive victory in the series came a little more than a week after Gators coach Todd Golden said β€œwe’re gonna beat ’em anyways” in response to a judge’s decision to allow Bediako to return to college.

This one was so one-sided that 7-foot-9 Olivier Rioux, the world's tallest teenager, played the final minute and scored Florida's last basket.

Boogie Fland chipped in 15 points, eight assists and a career-high eight steals for the defending national champion Gators (16-6, 7-2 Southeastern Conference). Fland dominated his matchup against the league’s leading scorer, Labaron Philon. Fland's eight steals matched the program record set by Clifford Lett in 1989.

Philon, who entered the game averaging 22 points, finished with 14. Aden Holloway led the Crimson Tide (14-7, 4-4) with 19 points.

Florida’s frontcourt was the difference. Condon, Haugh and Rueben Chinyelu combined for 61 points, 29 rebounds and five blocks. The Gators outscored Alabama 72-26 in the paint. Chinyelu finished with 14 points and 17 boards.

Bediako, a 7-footer who is suing the NCAA in an attempt to regain college eligibility despite leaving school and entering the NBA draft, played his third game with Alabama and first on the road. Florida’s student section taunted him with chants of β€œG League dropout” when he entered the game and touched the ball. Bediako finished with six points and seven rebounds before fouling out with 2:10 to play.

Florida used a 13-2 run late in the first half to help build a 10-point lead at the break and turned the Top 25 matchup into a lopsided affair by scoring the first 12 points coming out of the locker room.

The stat of the game: Alabama had 18 turnovers to Florida's two.

Stars top Mammoth 3-2 for 4th straight win

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) β€” Thomas Harley and Wyatt Johnston each scored a power-play goal in the first period to lead the Dallas Stars over the Utah Mammoth 3-2 on Saturday night.

Matt Duchene also scored in the first to help Dallas wrap up a three-game trip with its fourth straight victory. Jamie Benn had two assists and Casey DeSmith made 12 saves for the Stars.

Kailer Yamamoto scored twice for Utah. JJ Peterka assisted on both goals, increasing his career total to 101 assists. Karel Vejmelka made 28 stops for the Mammoth, who had won four home games in a row.

Ayo Dosunmu's season-high 29 points lead short-handed Bulls past Heat, 125-118

MIAMI (AP) β€” Ayo Dosunmu scored a season-high 29 points and the short-handed Chicago Bulls topped the Miami Heat 125-118 on Saturday night.

Dosunmu added nine assists and eight rebounds. Matas Buzelis scored 21 points and Isaac Okoro added 20 for the Bulls, who hit 20 3-pointers.

Pelle Larsson scored 22 and Bam Adebayo had 15 of his 21 in the fourth quarter for Miami, which tied the game four times in the final 3:37 but didn't reclaim the lead in any of those instances. Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 20 for Miami.

The teams play again in Miami on Sunday. It'll be the first time since Baltimore and Houston in 1972 that two NBA teams play three consecutive games in the same regular season against one another; the Heat won at Chicago in a rescheduled game on Thursday night.

A pair of quick time-outs paid off for the Bulls.

Chicago coach Billy Donovan called time 1:16 into the game; his team immediately went on a 12-0 run. He called time again 1:25 into the third quarter with his team down 11; the Bulls responded with a 10-0 run that time, part of a turnaround that saw them take a 91-84 lead into the fourth.

The Bulls played with six of their nine highest-paid players β€” Josh Giddey (hamstring), Nikola Vucevic (rest), Zach Collins (toe), Coby White (calf), Jalen Smith (calf) and Tre Jones (hamstring), who make about $94 million combined this season β€” out of the lineup for various reasons.

Miami played without four of its top six salaries, with Norman Powell (personal reasons), Davion Mitchell (shoulder), Tyler Herro (ribs) and Terry Rozier (on leave related to federal gambling charges) all out for the night. They count for about $89 million of Miami's salary cap this season.

And Miami used backup center Kel'el Ware for only 3:11 of the first half, his night ending early.

Anthony Edwards, Julis Randle lead Timberwolves to a 131-114 victory over the Grizzlies

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) β€” Anthony Edwards scored 33 points, Julius Randle added 27 points and seven assists, and the Minnesota Timberwolves won their fourth straight, 131-114 over the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday night.

Minnesota's winning streak was punctuated by a wire-to-wire victory over the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday night. All four wins have been by double-digits.

Naz Reid and Jaden McDaniels had 20 points apiece for the Timberwolves, Reid adding nine rebounds. Rudy Gobert grabbed 16 boards and added a pair of blocks.

Ty Jerome, playing in his first game of the season after recovering from a right calf strain, led Memphis with 20 points and six assists but could not prevent the Grizzlies from losing their sixth straight.

GG Jackson added 19 points and Jaylen Wells had 15.

Memphis has struggled of late, its losing streak coming amid injuries and reports the team is willing to trade star guard Ja Morant before Thursday's deadline. Morant was one of seven Memphis rotation players who sat out against the Timberwolves. Memphis did get the return of Jerome, signed as a free agent last summer.

Memphis had long-range shooting problems in the first half, making only one of its first 18 attempts from outside the 3-point arc. In the third quarter, Minnesota extended a 58-49 halftime lead to 92-73, making 12 of its first 16 shots in the quarter. The Timberwolves lead entering the fourth was 97-79.

Minnesota kept the lead at double-digits and coasted home after extending the advantage to 22 points with 3:46 remaining.

No. 2 UConn pulls away late in 1st half on way to 85-58 rout of struggling Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) β€” Braylon Mullins scored 16 points and Alex Karaban and Silas Demary Jr. had 15 apiece to lead No. 2 UConn in an 85-58 rout of Creighton on Saturday night.

The Huskies (21-1, 11-0 Big East) won their 17th straight game and posted their biggest winning margin in a conference road game in two years.

Creighton (12-10, 6-5) has dropped two straight games by a total of 51 points. The 27-point loss to the Huskies matched the most lopsided at home in coach Greg McDermott's 16 seasons at Creighton, according to Sportradar.

The Huskies had won five of their previous six games by six points or less, but this turned into a blowout after Creighton went into an offensive lull late in the first half and never recovered. The Huskies shot 54.1% from the field, their best mark in a Big East game this season, and turned 13 offensive rebounds into 23 points. They were 16 of 31 from 3-point range (52%).

Mullins returned to the lineup after sustaining a concussion a week ago against Villanova and missing Tuesday's game against Providence. He made a couple of early 3s and finished with four in 29 minutes.

Nik Graves and Blake Harper made their first starts since Dec. 7 after McDermott revamped his lineup following a 24-point loss at Marquette. Graves led the Bluejays with 17 points and Harper added 11.

Creighton played on even terms with the Huskies for most of the first half. But the Bluejays went the last 4:41 without a field goal and UConn's 14-3 spurt to close the period made it 41-30 at the break. The Huskies led by as many as 30 in the second half.

Wiggins, Jones, McCray V combine for 60 points as Florida State beats Stanford 88-80

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) β€” Chauncey Wiggins, Lajae Jones and Robert McCray V combined to score 60 points as Florida State held off Stanford 88-80 on Saturday, in the first meeting between the two sides in Tallahassee.

Wiggins was 6 of 13 from the floor and 7 of 8 at the line, scoring a team-high 23 points, including 16 in the second half for the Seminoles (10-12, 3-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). McCray V added 19 points, seven assists and two steals. Jones finished with 18 and five rebounds, scoring 13 in the first half.

Alex Steen had 12 points and Kobe Magee 10 to go with six rebounds.

The win makes it back to back for the Seminoles against their Californian foes in the ACC. They've won three of their last four games β€” all in ACC play β€” after starting the season 0-5 in the conference.

The Seminoles built a 41-33 lead at the half, using a 13-2 run to flip a four-point deficit into a six-point lead that grew. In the second half, they used a 12-0 run with seven points from Magee to build a 19-point lead with 11:38 to go.

That cushion allowed them to hold on despite an 11-4 Stanford run starting at the 6:17 mark with six points from Stanford freshman Ebuka Okorie.

Okorie started slow for the Cardinal (14-8, 3-6), scoring three in the first half on 1 of 4 shooting. He finished with 26 points after a 23-point second half in which he went 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Okorie entered the game ranked 13th in the country in scoring at 21.5 points per game and third among freshmen.

Benny Gealer added 12 points, AJ Rohosy 11, and Donavin Young 10. Oskar Giltay had nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals.

The Seminoles outscored the Cardinal 18-9 on points off turnovers.

Scheifele's late goal lifts Jets to 2-1 win over Panthers, who drop their 3rd in a row

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) β€” Mark Scheifele scored the go-ahead goal with 4:14 remaining, lifting the Winnipeg Jets to a 2-1 win over the sliding and short-handed Florida Panthers on Saturday.

Winnipeg was 1-18-2 in games where it trailed entering the third period going into the game, and was down 1-0 with 20 minutes left against the Panthers. But the Jets scored twice in a span of just over seven minutes to take command.

Cole Perfetti scored with 11:26 left to tie the game, then Scheifele got his 27th of the season for what became the game-winner.

Eric Comrie stopped 27 shots for the Jets, including one with 37.1 seconds left on a shot by Matthew Tkachuk. Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett got shots to the net after that as well for the Panthers, but neither got by Comrie and the Jets prevailed for just the third time in their last nine games.

Eetu Luostarinen got the goal for Florida, which has dropped three straight and ended the game eight points back of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers β€” who have been without Aleksander Barkov all season β€” played Saturday without Brad Marchand, who is day to day, along with Anton Lundell and Seth Jones, among others.

It was the first time this season that Florida took a lead into the third period and failed to get at least one point out of a game. The Panthers were 17-0-1 in such situations entering Saturday, the fifth-best record in the league.

Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 19 shots in the Florida net.
