New England Patriots quietly made a phenomenal free agency signing
The NFL’s first week of free agency produced a wave of lucrative new contracts. Teams continue to make deals as they build their 2026 rosters.
The AFC champions fall into that category. The New England Patriots have already made several moves as they aim to return to the Super Bowl.

On Wednesday, the Patriots made a signing that largely flew under the radar. Head coach Mike Vrabel brought in his former safety, Kevin Byard, on a one-year deal.

Byard and Vrabel previously worked together in Tennessee, where the Titans drafted Byard in 2016. Vrabel later took over as head coach, serving in that role from 2018 to 2023.
Byard has built a reputation as a true ball hawk. He led the NFL with eight interceptions last season—marking the second time in his career he has topped the league in that category.

The addition of Byard may have slipped under the radar, but it could prove to be a massive move. Vrabel and the Patriots reached the Super Bowl despite ranking in the bottom half of the league in takeaways.

Tennessee Titans defensive tackle Jurrell Casey (99), safety Kevin Byard (31), and linebacker Brian Orakpo (98), show off their new uniforms during the Titans uniform reveal event held at Broadway and 1st Avenue in Nashville on April 4, 2018.
If Byard can help spark more turnovers for the Patriots’ defense, it could lead to a strong follow-up season in 2026. Vrabel already guided New England to the Super Bowl in his first year as head coach.
Now the question becomes: Can Byard help Vrabel and the Patriots return to the Super Bowl by generating more takeaways?
