Barrett hits winning 3-pointer in OT as Raptors force Game 7, beat Cavaliers 112-100

TORONTO (AP) — RJ Barrett hit a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds remaining in overtime and the Toronto Raptors pushed their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series to a seventh game by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 112-110 on Friday night.

Evan Mobley had a chance to win it for Cleveland but his 3-pointer bounced off the front of the rim.

Scottie Barnes had 25 points and 14 assists, Barrett and Ja’Kobe Walter both scored 24 points and Collin Murray-Boyles added 17 as Toronto held on after blowing an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter.

Game 7 is in Cleveland on Sunday. The home team has won all six games so far in the series.

Mobley had 26 points and 14 rebounds, Donovan Mitchell scored 24 points and James Harden had 16 for the Cavaliers. Jarrett Allen scored 14 points and Dean Wade had 10.

Harden shot 5 for 14 and went 1 for 4 from 3-point range. He finished with nine rebounds and nine assists, but also made four turnovers.

Cleveland finished with 18 turnovers, leading to 25 points for Toronto.

The Raptors also held a big edge in fast-break points, outscoring the Cavaliers 20-6.

Barnes had 14 points and 10 assists by halftime, making him the eighth NBA player since 1997 with 14 or more points and 10 or more assists in one half of a playoff game.

Raptors forward Brandon Ingram did not play because of a sore right heel. Ingram left in the second quarter of Wednesday’s 125-120 loss at Cleveland.

Red Sox put Garrett Crochet on 15-day IL with shoulder inflammation and recall Nate Eaton

TORONTO (AP) — The Boston Red Sox put left-hander Garrett Crochet on the 15-day injured list Wednesday because of left shoulder inflammation and recalled utilityman Nate Eaton from Triple-A Worcester.

Last year’s AL Cy Young Award runner-up, when he went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA, Crochet has a 6.30 ERA through six starts in 2026.

Crochet (3-3) struck out seven over six shutout innings in Saturday’s 17-1 win at Baltimore, looking every bit the ace Boston traded for in December 2024 and signed to a $170 million, six-year contract in March 2025.

The Red Sox fired manager Alex Cora and five coaches following Saturday’s game.

Crochet’s win over the Orioles came two starts after the ugliest outing of his Red Sox career — an 11-run debacle over 1 2/3 innings at Minnesota on April 13.

Crochet has been an AL All-Star each of the past two seasons.

Eaton was batting .292 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 27 games at Triple-A. He played for Kansas City in 2022 and 2023, and appeared in 41 games for Boston last season.

The Red Sox play the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon.

Blue Jays RHP Trey Yesavage works 5 1/3 shutout innings against Boston in season debut

TORONTO (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage worked 5 1/3 shutout innings against Boston in his season debut Tuesday night and left to a standing ovation.

Yesavage struck out three, walked none and allowed four hits, including three singles. He left with a 3-0 lead after throwing 74 pitches, 50 for strikes.

The 22-year-old Yesavage began the season on the injured list while recovering from a shoulder impingement. He went 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA in four minor league rehab appearances, three starts, with the last two in Triple-A.

Willson Contreras hit a one-out double in the first before Yesavage got Roman Anthony to ground out and retired Wilyer Abreu on a fly ball.

Yesavage finished his outing by striking out Contreras on a slider to begin the sixth. A few in the sellout crowd of 41,949 booed when manager John Schneider came out to the mound, but they roared as Yesavage walked off. He was replaced by left-hander Mason Fluharty.

Yesavage rose through four minor league levels last season, striking out 160 batters in 98 innings combined at Dunedin, Vancouver, New Hampshire and Buffalo.

He made his big league debut at Tampa on Sept. 15, striking out nine in five innings, and went 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA in three regular-season starts before playing a major role in Toronto’s run to Game 7 of the World Series.

In Game 2 of the AL Division Series against the Yankees, Yesavage set a Blue Jays postseason record by striking out 11 over 5 1/3 hitless innings to win his postseason debut. He went 3-1 with a 3.58 ERA in six playoff appearances, five starts, striking out 39 in 27 2/3 innings.

Yesavage delivers his pitches from a unique arm angle that gives him one of the highest release points of any big league pitcher, 7.09 feet above the field.

Suárez fires 8 dominant innings as Red Sox blank Blue Jays 5-0 for first 3-game winning streak

TORONTO (AP) — Ranger Suárez and Greg Weissert combined on a two-hitter, Carlos Narváez hit a solo home run and the Boston Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 on Monday night, their third straight win and second in a row under interim manager Chad Tracy.

It’s the first time this season the Red Sox have won three straight. Boston fired manager Alex Cora and five coaches Saturday after starting 10-17.

A pair of Red Sox fans sat in the front row behind the visitors' bullpen with a sign paying tribute to Cora and coach Jason Varitek, who was reassigned within the organization. It read “Thanks AC-Tek. Forever our captain.”

Suárez (2-2) struck out 10 and walked one, matching a season high by going eight innings. He outpitched Dylan Cease and held the Blue Jays without a hit until Jesús Sánchez doubled down the left-field line to begin the sixth. Suárez struck out the next two batters, then retired leadoff hitter Myles Straw on a flyball.

The left-hander set down the final nine batters he faced before Weissert finished, pitching around a two-out double in the ninth by pinch-hitter Daulton Varsho.

Narváez extended Boston’s season-high streak of games with at least one home run to five by hitting a two-out drive off rookie Chase Lee in the eighth. The homer was Narváez’s second.

The Red Sox have homered seven times in the past five games after hitting five home runs in their previous 17 games.

Cease (1-1) allowed four runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out five.

Blue Jays left fielder Davis Schneider had the highlight defensive play, a diving catch on Jarren Duran’s sinking liner to end the sixth.

Up next

Blue Jays RHP Trey Yesavage is expected to be activated off the injured list to make his season debut Tuesday. LHP Payton Tolle (0-0, 1.50 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Red Sox.

Martínez hits 2 homers as Guardians rough up Scherzer and beat Blue Jays 8-6

TORONTO (AP) — Angel Martínez went deep twice for his first career multi-homer game, Daniel Schneemann added the first leadoff homer of his career and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Toronto Blue Jays 8-6 on Friday night.

All three home runs came off Toronto’s Max Scherzer (1-3), who allowed seven runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings, his fourth straight winless outing. It’s the third time in five starts this season that Scherzer has failed to complete three innings.

Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams (4-1) allowed six runs and seven hits in six innings for his fourth win in five starts. He walked two and struck out four.

Hunter Gaddis pitched the seventh, Erik Sabrowski worked the eighth and Cade Smith finished for his sixth save in eight chances.

Martínez capped a five-run first inning with his fourth homer of the season, then chased Scherzer with a one-out drive in the third.

On his second homer, Martínez fouled off the first seven pitches before taking three straight balls, then connected on the 11th pitch of the at-bat.

Martínez struck out in his final two plate appearances, but finished 2 for 4 with four RBIs. It’s his second four-RBI game this season and the third of his career.

Kazuma Okamota and Jesús Sánchez hit solo home runs for Toronto, but the Blue Jays couldn’t overcome Scherzer’s rough start.

Sánchez homered in the first, his third. Okamoto hit a 430-foot drive into the second deck in center in the second, his fourth.

Blue Jays outfielder Nathan Lukes exited in the first inning because of a sore left hamstring. Lukes hit a leadoff double, but walked off following a brief conversation with the trainer and manager John Schneider.

Up next

Blue Jays RHP Kevin Gausman (1-1, 2.54 ERA) is expected to start Saturday against Guardians LHP Joey Cantillo (1-0, 3.20).
