Delgado Community College Coach of the Week: Destrehan’s Chris Mire

DESTREHAN, La. — Chris Mire has helped No.14 Destrehan orchestrate a special Cinderella run in his 13th season as head coach.

The Wildcats swept No. 3 West Monroe in round two and No.6 Benton in the Division I non-select quarterfinals.

“The guys love the fact that, you know, we’re the Cinderella team and we are a bunch of nobodies. We’ve kind of had that mantra for a little while now here with this group, because we feel like we don’t get a lot of love. And so they love it. I mean, to them it’s the next challenge. It’s we’re going places, doing the things that we expect to do. I don’t think anybody that’s in our locker room is surprised,” Mire said.

The Wildcats’ playoff success has put the program back in the semi-final picture for the first time since 2005.

It’s also helped coach Mire and company restore Destrehan’s rich tradition on the diamond.

“This has been a blast. My son’s a senior. It’s been so rewarding this last month. It’s all the things that we’ve been trying to build. You know, it’s been frustrating not being able to get out of the first round the last few years because we felt like we were better than that. And it’s kind of just been rewarding just because this is where we felt like we belonged,” Mire added.
