Vegas took a 3-0 lead early in the third period and held off a late rally by the Avalanche for a 4-2 win in Game 1 on Wednesday night. Dylan Coghlan’s first goal of the playoffs put the Golden Knights up 1-0 at 12:29 of the second period, and Pavel Dorofeyev’s power-play marker less than three minutes later made it a 2-0 game. Brett Howden scored 1:34 into the third period, and Nic Dowd sealed it with an empty-net goal in the final minute. Carter Hart, meanwhile, made 36 saves to secure the victory.

The Avalanche, missing top defenseman Cale Makar due to an upper-body injury, finally got on the board when Valeri Nichuskin scored 5:53 into the third period, and captain Gabriel Landeskog made it a 3-2 game with a power-play goal with 2:21 left. Makar is listed as day-to-day and is a game-time decision for Game 2.

Dorofeyev comes into Game 2 with a playoff-high 10 goals while Mitch Marner leads the postseason with 19 points, including seven goals. Hart enters the game with a .918 save percentage and 2.35 goals against average. Nathan MacKinnon leads Colorado with seven goals and 14 points, with the Avalanche losing just once in the first two rounds. Scott Wedgewood has started eight of Colorado’s 10 games in the postseason with a .911 save percentage and 2.32 GAA.
