St. James aims to end championship drought after consecutive playoff heartbreaks

Destrehan, La. (WGNO) – St. James finishes 2025 one game short of making its third-straight state championship appearance, but the Wildcats have plenty of playoff woes in recent memory.

Losing back-to-back state title games, then suffering a blowout loss versus Sterlington in the Division III Non-Select semifinals last season recaps the team’s last three playoff runs.

However, the Wildcat’s work ethic this offseason gives head coach Lavanta Davis confidence St. James is ready to get the job done.

“Our kids buying into the program, showing up everyday for summer workouts, understanding we taking it one day at a time. That’s where the confidence is built. We rarely talk about state championships. We just talk about the process of working towards getting better every day,” Davis explained.

“Everybody on the team basically been stumped a couple of years already. Everybody knows how it feels to lose in the Dome or the semis so everybody ready to go this year. Everybody got a chip on they shoulder,” senior Jye Blain added.

Blain is one player who shoulders the burden of winning the elusive state championship.

The senior is part of St. James’ veteran-led defensive backfield, and the secondary’s collective experience is what the LaTech commit is leaning on.

“Most of our team have good experience already. Most of them are like three-year starters. Everybody got experience already so we going be good,” Blain continued.

“We return a good group, a senior-laden group on the defensive end, on the back end, in the secondary, but we return a good group of 10th, 11th graders back on the offensive side as well. We going be pretty good,” Davis added.

Speaking of offense, one of the most important returning starters for St. James is quarterback Jajuan Jackson, who finishes 2025 with more than 2400 passing yards and 34 touchdown passes, while leading the Wildcats on a deep playoff run, and the junior’s familiarity with the St. James’s system, gives their head coach the ability to diversify the offense.

“It’s always good to bring back your quarterback. He’s a lot more familiar with the offense so we’re able to open up, expand that playbook a little more so we’re excited about it,” Davis finished.

Braves sign former NL MVP Andrew McCutchen to minor league deal in ongoing search for a veteran bat

The Atlanta Braves signed former NL MVP outfielder Andrew McCutchen to a minor league contract on Friday in their ongoing search for a veteran who can provide offensive help.

The 39-year-old McCutchen was released by the Texas Rangers on May 27 after he hit .192 in 37 games as a designated hitter, pinch hitter and outfielder.

The NL East-leading Braves (50-35) signed first baseman Carlos Santana, 40, to a minor league deal last week. McCutchen, the 2013 NL MVP with Pittsburgh, is expected to soon report to Triple-A Gwinnett. On Thursday, another veteran first baseman, Rowdy Tellez, was designated for assignment as rookie shortstop Jim Jarvis was recalled from Gwinnett.

McCutchen played his first nine seasons in the majors with the Pirates and earned five straight All-Star berths from 2011-15 while becoming one of the team’s most popular players. After stints with five other teams from 2018-22, he returned to the Pirates for the 2023-25 seasons.

In 2025, McCutchen hit .239 with 13 homers and 57 RBIs in 135 games before becoming a free agent. He is a career .271 hitter with 333 homers, 1,157 RBIs and 220 stolen bases in 2,299 games.

Braves manager Walt Weiss said McCutchen is “one of the most respected players in the game. ... He’s a pretty cool name to have in a Braves uniform.”

Weiss said McCutchen will be a good leader for young players. “He’s going to impact any room he’s in,” Weiss said.

The Braves on Friday also recalled right-hander Anthony Molina, activated left-hander Danny Young (elbow) from the injured list and optioned right-hander James Karinchak to Gwinnett. Right-hander Ian Hamilton was designated for assignment.

Olson hits 2 homers, Harris and Albies also go deep as Braves roll to 5-3 win over struggling Mets

Matt Olson hit two home runs, Michael Harris II added a two-run shot, and Ozzie Albies also homered as the Atlanta Braves cranked up their power game to beat the New York Mets 5-3 on Friday night.

The Braves lead second-place Philadelphia in the NL East by three games despite entering the four-game series with a 5-14 record since June 9.

New York dropped 16 games under .500 for the first time since 2018. The most games under .500 for a team that reached the postseason was 16 by the 1914 Boston Braves at 12-28, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

The Braves reclaimed their power stroke with the four homers. They had not hit as many as three homers in a game since a 5-2 win at Cincinnati on May 30.

Ronald Acuña Jr., who has been out since June 10 with a left hamstring strain, had two of the homers in the May 30 game. The Braves’ downturn has overlapped his time on the injured list.

Atlanta signed Andrew McCutchen to a minor league deal in their ongoing search for offense.

Juan Soto hit a two-run homer for the Mets.

Braves right-hander Grant Holmes (5-4) allowed five hits and two runs, one earned, in five innings. Raisel Iglesias gave up a run-scoring single to Bo Bichette in the ninth before earning his 17th save.

Mets right-hander Christian Scott (2-1) gave up three runs on two hits and four walks in four innings.

The Mets, in last place in the NL East, have lost 10 of 12.

Interim manager Andy Green tweaked his lineup. Carson Benge, who had been the leadoff hitter in every game since May 12, hit fifth and had one hit. A.J. Ewing was the leadoff hitter for the first time this season. Ewing reached on a fielding error by Olson at first base and scored on Soto’s homer to left field in the third inning.

Up next

Atlanta’s Chris Sale was scheduled to face New York’s Sean Manaea (1-3, 4.71) in a matchup of left-handers Saturday night.

Powerboat racing will return to Pittsburgh waters in 2027

The Formula One Powerboat National Championship will return to Pittsburgh’s Three Rivers beginning on the July 4 weekend in 2027, marking the first time in a decade that the race has been held in the city.

The event is part of a new annual Fourth of July tradition, resulting from a three-year partnership between SportsPITTSBURGH and the International Hot Rod Association Powerboat Series.

This will be the first event owned and operated by SportsPITTSBURGH, a division of VisitPITTSBURGH.

“Pittsburgh has earned a national reputation for hosting world-class sporting events, and this partnership represents the next evolution of that success,” VisitPITTSBURGH President and CEO Jerad Bachar said. “We’re not simply bringing powerboat racing back to our rivers — we’re creating a signature Fourth of July tradition that showcases one of Pittsburgh’s greatest assets, strengthens our visitor economy and gives travelers another compelling reason to choose Pittsburgh year after year.”

The competition will feature IHRA’s premier Formula One powerboats, one of the sport’s fastest and most competitive racing circuits, with drivers battling for the National Championship. Racing will take place on the Allegheny River. Formula Lights and Tri-Hull classes will also compete throughout the weekend.

“We’re thrilled to bring the inaugural Formula One Powerboat National Championship to Pittsburgh for the next three years,” Tim Seebold, managing director of F1 for the IHRA, said. “This is such a fabulous venue for these high-powered watercrafts, and, with the other two classes, we are looking for some great racing on these tricky waters.”

Beyond the races, the two-day celebration will offer various free and family-friendly entertainment. This includes fly-boarders, stunt dogs and a dramatic drone light show.

“Major events like this are a win for our city,” Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor said. “They bring local families and visitors to the riverfronts, create vibrancy Downtown and support our local businesses. Adding the Formula One Powerboat National Championship to Pittsburgh’s Independence Day celebration is an exciting opportunity to create a new tradition on our rivers.”

Peachtree Road Race 2026: Runners urged to plan for heat

The countdown is on to the Peachtree Road Race, and thousands of runners are making final preparations. With extreme heat expected, organizers are urging everyone to have a plan before they head to the starting line.

“We’ve been running in the heat, so we’ve been preparing in the morning, so we’re pretty ready for it,” participant Irene Savini told Channel 2’s Brittany Kleinpeter.

The race is starting under a red flag heat alert, which means dangerous heat and humidity are expected. And race officials are urging people to slow their pace, stay hydrated and listen to their bodies. The color-coded system ranges from green for good conditions to yellow for moderate, red for high risk, and black for a cancellation.

“We will probably just walk the rest of the way if it happens because the reality is there’s not a lot of options of how to get back,” shared runner Lynn Savini.

According to the Atlanta Track Club’s website, they will keep runners informed of the alert levels via email, texts and social media, as well as updating flags along the race route. If a black flag does go up, runners are advised to stop running.

“I don’t want anyone to be hurt, so they have to do what they have to do,” shared participant Calvin Thorbourne.

Race officials say temperatures at the start will be close to 80 but feel like conditions could climb near 90 degrees as waves progress through the morning.

“Don’t rush. … There’s no need to rush. Just have fun," added runner Juliana Btancur.

The 6.2-mile race begins at Lenox Square and ends at Piedmont Park with waves starting shortly before 6:15 a.m. on Saturday.

Race officials say they’ll continue to monitor conditions and could adjust alert levels up until race time.

Teammates of Travis Kelce and others around sports expected to attend his wedding to Taylor Swift

Some of Travis Kelce’s teammates on the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs, retired Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl-winning brother Jason and other players and prominent figures around sports are expected to be in attendance for his wedding to pop superstar Taylor Swift on Friday.

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle said recently he received an invitation and planned to attend.

The wedding is slated to take place at Madison Square Garden, the home arena of the NBA’s New York Knicks and NHL’s Rangers. Swift attended Game 4 of the NBA Finals there, sitting courtside as the Knicks pulled off the biggest comeback at that stage of the playoffs in league history by rallying from down 29 to beat San Antonio.

MSG has been the site of some iconic sports moments since the current version opened at this location atop Penn Station in 1968.

The Knicks won their first NBA title there in 1970, when Willis Reed famously returned from injury to spark their Game 7 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Joe Frazier beat Muhammad Ali there in the first of the legends’ three boxing matches against each other, the “Fight of the Century,” in 1971. Ali won the rematch in ’74.

The Rangers ended their 54-year championship drought at the Garden in 1994, defeating the Vancouver Canucks to win the Stanley Cup.

Kelce is a three-time Super Bowl champion with Kansas City and a four-time AP All-Pro selection at his position. Jason was a seven-time All-Pro center who helped Philadelphia win the Super Bowl in the 2017 season.

Irvin set a NFL record for most punt return yards in a single-game on Oct. 11, 1981. He finished with 207 punt return yards and two touchdowns against the Atlanta Falcons, who were playing at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. His record hasn’t been broken.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and Rams teammate Eric Dickerson paid tribute to Irvin in a social media post.

“Devastated to hear about the passing of my brother, teammate, and Rams legend Leroy Irvin. ‘Stronger than you think’: Family establishes scholarship to honor young baseball player’s memory

Davis Heller was playing fall ball in South Carolina when he suddenly passed away. Now, his family is working to ensure that his memory lives on and helps others.

Inside a journal written by Davis are the words: “Keep going, because you’re stronger than you think you are.”

Melanie and DJ Heller now live by those words written by their son.

“Our daughter found his journal and his baseball bag, and it’s really become a huge tribute for him,” Melanie told Channel 9’s Erika Jackson.

The family’s strength was tested nearly four years ago when Davis suddenly died from an undiagnosed heart issue.

“He just had such a rare impact on so many people and so many lives at such a young age for 22 years,” Melanie said.

The Hellers say most of those 22 years were filled with baseball. Davis played for the University of Alabama before transferring to North Greenville University.

“If he wasn’t in the starting lineup, if he wasn’t in the lineup, he didn’t change who he was. He was always supporting this team,” Melanie said.

That’s why they created the Davis Heller Memorial Foundation. It provides scholarships to student-athletes.

“People like [Davis] are often the best teammate in the world, but they never get rewarded because athletic departments just aren’t handing out, you know, personality scholarships,” said Noah Takac, the recipient of the first scholarship.

It’s the teammates who are most supportive and dedicated who earn the Davis Heller Memorial Scholarship.

Takac is Davis’ friend and teammate at North Greenville University.

“There’s not much physical reward you get anymore for being just a good teammate, and that’s kind of the goal for us, is to seek out those people that are like true glue,” Takac said.

The Hellers believe being a good teammate goes beyond stats and batting averages. They say Davis was proof of that, and it’s how they now want to honor others who have those same qualities.

“It’s bigger than baseball, it’s bigger than sports, you know; it’s who you are and who your character is, is going to be, [that] makes you successful in life,” Melanie said.

You can learn more about the Davis Heller Memorial Foundation or donate to the scholarship at this link.
