After Muñoz: Liverpool focus on three positions after sealing signing of Spaniard

Liverpool’s summer business is only just getting started, with the club reportedly targeting several more signings after triggering the €40m release clause for Osasuna winger Victor Muñoz.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are now pursuing a central midfielder, centre-back and right-back as part of a wider rebuild under new head coach Andoni Iraola.

That shows the Muñoz deal is not being treated as a one-off move, but as the first step in a more aggressive transfer plan.

Liverpool moved quickly to land the 22-year-old Spain international, with Reuters reporting that the Reds paid his €40m release clause and handed him a six-year contract.

The Guardian also reported that Liverpool beat Newcastle to the signing, giving Iraola his first arrival since taking charge.

Midfield and defense now in focus at Liverpool

The next phase could be even more important. Liverpool need extra control in midfield, especially if Iraola wants a team capable of pressing aggressively while still managing games with the ball.

Centre-back is another area to watch. Ibrahima Konaté’s move to Real Madrid has left a major gap, and Liverpool cannot rely only on Virgil van Dijk’s experience.

They need another defender with pace, strength and composure in possession.

Right-back is also on the agenda, which makes sense after recent uncertainty around the position.

Liverpool need depth, but they also need a player who can handle the physical demands of Iraola’s system.

A rebuild with a clear pattern

What stands out is the profile Liverpool appear to be targeting. Muñoz brings pace, versatility and intensity, exactly the qualities Iraola values.

If the club now add a midfielder, centre-back and right-back with similar athletic traits, this could quickly become a very different Liverpool side.

The message is clear: Liverpool are not just adding talent. They are reshaping the squad around speed, aggression and tactical flexibility.

The Muñoz deal may be the headline today, but the real rebuild is still to come.

Liverpool’s €40m new signing suffers worrying injury setback on international duty

Liverpool completed the €40 million signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna yesterday.

The 22-year-old is currently away with the Spanish national team on World Cup duty, and he has picked up a muscle injury.

We have agreed a deal to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance 😄

— Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 18, 2026

According to a report from Cadena Ser, the 22-year-old attacker was already recovering from a knock he had carried over from last season, but his recovery has been delayed after he picked up another muscle problem. The report states that it is unclear when the player will return to action and that he will be carefully monitored during that time.

“During the planned and individualized recovery process, an additional muscle injury has occurred that will delay his return to competition. His availability for the upcoming matches will depend on the evolution of his symptoms,” the RFEF medical team reported in a statement.

Munoz had an impressive season with Osasuna, registering 15 goal contributions across all competitions. The 22-year-old would have expected to make his mark in the World Cup with his country. He is an exciting young talent, and Spain could certainly use his explosive pace and flair from the flanks.

Meanwhile, Liverpool will certainly hope that the injury is not serious, and he can return to action quickly.

Liverpool are in desperate need of quality wide players, and they have decided to invest in the 22-year-old. He could be an important player for the club next season. The last thing the Premier League would need is for him to pick up an injury problem. Liverpool struggled with multiple injuries last season, and they will be hoping for better luck on that front this time around.

Liverpool not done yet after Munoz deal as Sky Sports man reveals next ‘dream target’

Liverpool successfully hijacked Newcastle’s deal for Victor Munoz last night, pulling off a transfer coup that seemingly came out of nowhere.

The 22-year-old Osasuna winger looked destined for Tyneside before the Reds aggressively swooped in to steal his signature.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg on X, the deal to bring Muñoz to Anfield is now “all done and sealed.”

Liverpool moved swiftly by activating the €40 million (£34.5m) release clause in the Spaniard’s Osasuna contract.

The transfer is set to be finalised and officially announced later this week.

Munoz, a highly-rated, dynamic winger who has just enjoyed a breakout season in La Liga, was a primary desired target for newly appointed Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola.

Iraola’s deep familiarity with Spanish football played a decisive role in convincing the club to trigger the clause, beating out not only Newcastle but other European heavyweights.

Liverpool eye another winger: Yan Diomande remains ‘dream target’

Despite getting the Munoz deal over the line, Plettenberg understands that Liverpool’s summer shopping spree in the wide departments is far from over.

The Reds still want to sign at least one more top winger to reinforce Iraola’s attacking options.

RB Leipzig’s teenage sensation Yan Diomande remains Liverpool’s ultimate ‘dream target’. However, finalizing a deal for the 19-year-old Ivorian international is proving to be incredibly difficult.

As per Plettenberg, RB Leipzig’s Oliver Mintzlaff and Jurgen Klopp are fiercely reluctant to part with their prized asset and do not want to sell the Bundesliga Rookie of the Season.

How Victor Munoz fits into Iraola’s plans at Liverpool

The frantic pursuit of Munoz underlines a major tactical shift at Anfield under Andoni Iraola.

Renowned for his high-intensity, vertical pressing style, Iraola demanded directness and raw pace on the flanks.

Clocked as one of the fastest players in Spain last season, Munoz gives Liverpool the exact injection of speed required to transition into this new era.

His versatility to play across both wings offers immediate tactical flexibility as the club reconstructs its frontline.

Sources: Newcastle have already held talks over Victor Munoz transfer alternatives, including Arsenal duo

Newcastle United have been exploring alternatives to the Victor Munoz transfer as Liverpool are now understood to have won the race for the Osasuna winger.

Although our sources have confirmed the Magpies entered into advanced talks over signing Munoz, there was also some hesitation about meeting the 22-year-old’s release clause, while Liverpool were happy to pay it and moved quickly to do so.

Newcastle have had other options in mind for some time, with Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Cody Gakpo all understood to have been discussed.

As reported recently, Tottenham are interested in Gakpo and could make a move, but Newcastle have also been hovering, and the Munoz blow could lead to them accelerating their interest.

Newcastle ask about Arsenal duo

Some sources have also suggested to me that conversations have already happened between Newcastle and Arsenal as they look for information on the availability of Trossard and Martinelli.

I’m told that NUFC were directly informed that Trossard is in advanced talks over joining Besiktas, as we reported last week, so that deal currently looks unlikely.

Martinelli is also available, however, so Newcastle have been keen to gather information on how much the Brazilian could cost.

“Newcastle have been exploring other options, they weren’t putting all their eggs into the Munoz basket,” one source explained.

“They’ve asked Arsenal about Trossard and Martinelli. They also like Cody Gakpo, but the current feeling seems to be that Martinelli could be cheaper.

“Nothing’s advanced yet, and Newcastle won’t rush this. They weren’t entirely convinced about meeting Munoz’s release clause, and they’re prepared to wait to find a deal they’re fully convinced strengthens their squad whilst still representing good value for money.”

Nick Woltemade’s Newcastle future in doubt

Newcastle’s interest in a winger comes after Anthony Gordon’s exit, but Nick Woltemade could be on his way out of St James’ Park too.

As I reported earlier today, Woltemade has interest from Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Aston Villa.

The Germany international has struggled to settle under Eddie Howe and the club would be prepared to sanction his sale after just one season.

Even if that doesn’t happen, Newcastle’s plan is to make changes up front again this summer after Woltemade and Yoane Wissa failed to adequately replace Alexander Isak after his move to Liverpool.

Medical already done: Liverpool to finalise first Andoni Iraola signing as rival suitors named

Liverpool reportedly beat rivals such as Manchester United to the transfer of Osasuna winger Victor Munoz, who has already had his medical with the Reds.

The Spain international is at the World Cup with his country, but that didn’t stop him undergoing medical tests with Liverpool yesterday, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Munoz had notably been linked strongly with Newcastle United, with BBC Sport claiming that the Magpies were in advanced talks over signing the 22-year-old until Liverpool hijacked the deal.

Now it seems the Liverpool Echo are also aware of Man Utd showing an interest in Munoz, along with Bayer Leverkusen and the player’s former club Real Madrid.

What can Victor Munoz bring to Liverpool?

Munoz is not yet that experienced, and hasn’t been particularly prolific for Osasuna, but he seems like a player with a bright future.

He’s also not going to cost LFC a fortune, so this seems like sensible business, judging by the criteria we use in our Transfer Fit rating system

Victor Munoz TOTAL SCORE: 16/25
Transfer fee ****

Squad need *****

We’ve scored this a medium level 16/25, with Munoz looking like someone arriving at a good stage of his career in a position Liverpool need to strengthen in.

Blessed with pace and skill out wide, Munoz looks like he could at the very least provide new manager Andoni Iraola with a better squad player option than unconvincing performers like Cody Gakpo and Federico Chiesa.

Still, Liverpool will also surely need to invest big money in a more proven player who can come in straight away and act as the replacement for the departing Mohamed Salah.

While that’s obviously going to be a big ask for almost any player, it seems more like a job for someone with more outstanding numbers and consistent performances at the very highest level, which Munoz just doesn’t quite have under his belt at this moment in time.

Update: Liverpool “optimistic” about signing another World Cup star alongside Victor Munoz

Liverpool are reportedly optimistic about their chances of signing RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande alongside Victor Munoz during the World Cup this summer.

It’s been reported that the Reds have hijacked Newcastle United’s move for Osasuna and Spain star Munoz, with the possibility of a medical happening in the US, according to BBC Sport.

On top of that, it seems Ben Jacobs is aware of Liverpool still being keen to land Diomande, who is also at the World Cup this summer to represent the Ivory Coast.

See below for details as Jacobs reports on LFC being up against PSG for the 19-year-old’s signature, with the possibility of these two exciting winger deals being done during the World Cup…

With the likes of Cody Gakpo and last summer’s signings Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz looking underwhelming, it’s therefore no surprise to see the Merseyside giants going big on new attacking signings this summer.

If they could bring in both Diomande and Munoz, that would surely be a huge boost for incoming new manager Andoni Iraola.

Diomande in particular looks like a world class talent in the making, even if he’s still young and inexperienced.

Munoz also looks like someone who could have a fine career, even if he’s perhaps not yet looking like being in the same bracket as someone like Diomande.

This kind of investment is surely needed, though, so Liverpool fans will be pleased to see transfer rumours like this hotting up.

“Hijack done” – Fabrizio Romano confirms sudden Liverpool signing, medical can be done at World Cup

Liverpool have reportedly made a surprise move to hijack Newcastle United’s transfer pursuit of Osasuna winger Victor Munoz.

According to Fabrizio Romano on X, the Reds have suddenly triggered Munoz’s release clause despite Newcastle having been in advanced talks over signing the Spain international.

Munoz has impressed in La Liga, and the 22-year-old is already a part of the Spanish national team squad for this summer’s World Cup.

More info on Liverpool’s Victor Munoz hijack

According to further information from BBC Sport, Liverpool already have staff ready in the United States so that Munoz can undergo a medical while he’s with Spain for the World Cup.

Munoz looks set to cost LFC just £34.6m, so it looks like they may have got themselves a real bargain there.

At the same time, some fans might also view this as a bit of a gamble on a player for the future, as he’s still relatively inexperienced and only scored seven goals in all competitions last season – hardly the kind of numbers that suggest he’s a Mohamed Salah replacement.

This could prove to be good business in the long run, but Liverpool will also surely need to invest bigger money in a more genuine world class talent who’s ready to come in and hit the ground running straight away.

Newcastle, meanwhile, will no doubt be frustrated to miss out on Munoz as they’ve just sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, so could’ve done with bringing this player in as a replacement.

Sources: Spanish winger ready to reject Man United & Liverpool move for PL rivals

Newcastle United appear to have beaten Manchester United and Liverpool to the front of the queue for Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz, with the Spanish attacker convinced by the project at St James’ Park.

Newcastle are in advanced talks over a deal worth around €35m plus €5m in bonuses, sources close to the agents industry have informed CaughtOffside.

That package would take the total value close to Osasuna’s €40m asking price and could make him one of the club’s most exciting attacking signings of the summer.

For Man United and Liverpool, this is a frustrating setback. Both clubs had been linked with the 22-year-old, but Newcastle have offered something more convincing, a clear role, regular minutes and a direct pathway into Eddie Howe’s attacking plans.

Why Man United and Liverpool lost the race

Muñoz’s priority has always been game time, and that is where Newcastle seem to have made the strongest case.

With Anthony Gordon’s future uncertain, there is a clear opening on the wing, and Newcastle have moved quickly to show the player he would not simply be another squad option.

Want more CaughtOffside coverage? Add us as a preferred source on Google to your favourites list for news you can trust

Reports from AS also suggest Muñoz has prioritised continuity and minutes, despite interest from clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona.

That makes this feel less like a bidding-war defeat and more like a sporting rejection for United and Liverpool.

Real Madrid are still involved

Real Madrid remain part of the story because of the clauses they kept when selling Muñoz to Osasuna.

Madrid hold a low buy-back option, while several reports also point to a major sell-on clause.

Madrid are not expected to bring him back this summer, but they are still set to profit from any Newcastle deal.

CaughtOffside has also reported that Newcastle are optimistic about completing the transfer quickly.

For Newcastle, this would be a statement signing. For Man United and Liverpool, it is another reminder that Newcastle’s project now has serious pulling power.
