The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs this offseason and traded for A.J. Brown. It's a major change to the offense, and the team is hoping it's for the best.

Brown and Diggs are both proven No. 1 receivers in the NFL. Diggs was a 1,000-yard receiver last season, but Brown is younger and plays a different style of football than Diggs. However, quarterback Drake Maye sees some similarities between the two.

"The best thing about him, he’s been a winner," Maye said. "He knows what it’s like to win. He adds something to that room that we were kind of looking for. I think Stef provided it for us last year. There's been guys that are growing in their roles, but coming in with that stature and his ability and his size, and just the respect that he walks in there with that Stef had, A.J.’s got it too.”

Diggs was an All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler when he got to New England. He had led the league in receiving yards and receptions at one point in his career, so it was easy for young players to look up to him. Similarly, Brown also has an elite resume.

He has a Super Bowl ring, three Pro Bowl selections, and over 8,000 career receiving yards. The Patriots saw Diggs emerge as a leader last season. Now, the team hopes that Brown can use his experience to fill a similar role.

A.J. Brown's tenure with the Philadelphia Eagles will be defined by rampant success and constant controversy.

Although Brown deactivated his social media accounts a day before the trade was officially announced, he did not leave town quietly.

A new report from Mike Garafolo said that the three-time All-Pro wide receiver left an unambiguous note at the Eagles facilities after being traded.

"The best to ever play here. Always open," the note read.

This was perhaps Brown's last dig at quarterback Jalen Hurts and the Eagles coaching staff. The main gripe in his final season with Philadelphia was the stagnant passing offense.

Brown posted his lowest yardage total in his four years with Philadelphia, and he blamed it on the, at times admittedly awful, play calling of first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.

Maybe his latest display of ego is enough to comfort Philadelphia fans who think the team may not have made the right choice in letting Brown walk.

5 takeaways from Day 1 of Patriots minicamp as A.J. Brown stands out

FOXBOROUGH – During OTAs, the Patriots held a series of full-team drills pitting their offense against their defense.

Although players were going full speed, Tuesday’s practice felt different.

The team’s first day of minicamp showcased an intense environment that led to trash-talking between the offensive and defensive units.

The defense celebrated incomplete passes and short completions that came up shy of the end zone. When the offense scored, players on the sideline erupted, pointing out their success to their defensive teammates.

“It’s just another day and opportunity to get out there and get better,” Hunter Henry said. “That’s what we’re trying to attack every single day. Just take it day by day, not get too far ahead, not look at the past too much, just focus on the present. Yeah, it was good because we got a lot of guys coming back and got some new guys kind of coming in the fold. It’s always good to have kind of carryover, especially in the red zone.”

As Henry noted, Tuesday’s focus was in the red zone.

Drake Maye was very efficient, completing 19-of-22 passes on the day. That included touchdown passes to running back Rhamondre Stevenson and Henry. The quarterback also had a nice connection with A.J. Brown, who caught two of three passes.

Here are the top takeaways from Day 1 of Patriots minicamp:

Is Christian Gonzalez holding in?

Christian Gonzalez returned to Patriots practice – kind of.

The Pro Bowl cornerback opted to skip OTAs as his agents are in the middle of contract negotiations with the team. Although he was on the practice field on Tuesday, it was noteworthy that Gonzalez didn’t take any meaningful reps during full-team drills.

After practice, Gonzalez spoke to the media and reiterated that he wanted to stay in New England.

“Yeah, for sure. Of course I want to be here,” Gonzalez said. “I’ve said this multiple times. I’ve been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot, and I love this town. I love this city. So, yeah, of course I want to be here.”

Why did he skip OTAs?

“I mean, felt like I could get my work in,” Gonzalez said. “I was able to talk to the coaches, and we talked about it and got some work in.”

Gonzalez took part in the warmup and individual drills to start practice. However, he stood in the back of the end zone during 11-on-11 drills. He didn’t participate in the competitive portion of practice while other players who also skipped OTAs did. That included cornerback Carlton Davis.

The Patriots starting defense had Davis and backup Kindle Vildor at outside cornerback while Marcus Jones played the slot.

Gonzalez was asked if he was optimistic a deal would soon get done.

“I hope so,” he said. “I mean, It’s between them two. I mean, both sides to get it done. And like I said, I want to be here, so that’s what. That’s what I’m gonna say.”

Does he want to reset the market at his position?

“That’s another question that is between my agents and the Patriots and that team and what they value me at,” Gonzalez said.

A.J. Brown shines

It’s hard not to notice A.J. Brown.

At 6-foot-1, 226 pounds, the Pro Bowler sticks out among his peers on the practice field. Then when the action starts, it’s easy to see why Brown has earned multiple Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.

On Tuesday, Maye’s third pass went to his newest receiver. That’s when Brown jumped up and over backup cornerback Kindle Vildor to make a nice catch on a back shoulder fade.

“He can do everything,” Gonzalez said of Brown. “He’s got the size, he’s got the speed, he’s got the route running. … He’s very smart, and I mean, that’s anything you want at a receiver. Excited that he’s here.”

Brown finished the practice with two catches on three targets. He received more reps on Tuesday than he did last week in OTAs, which marked his first practice with the Patriots. His teammates were excited that the team traded for the Pro Bowler.

“We’re excited to kind of obviously add a piece like that,” Henry said. “I mean, a guy that’s very established in this league, he’s made a lot of plays. It’s really going to help this football team tremendously.”

Added Kayshon Boutte: “A.J., I mean, y’all see what I see. All the 50-50 balls are really 100-0 with him. Big body receiver can win any matchup on the field.”

Kayshon Boutte’s fit in the offense

Boutte returned to the practice field on Tuesday after he also skipped OTAs.

After the Patriots signed Romeo Doubs and traded for Brown, Boutte has been the subject of trade rumors. Many question how this receiver would fit in with the Patriots after the new additions.

On Tuesday, we received a sneak peek.

The first time the Patriots played three receivers, they lined up Brown on the left side of the offensive line with DeMario Douglas in the slot on the right side next to Boutte out wide. It was interesting to see Boutte play ahead of Doubs on the depth chart.

After practice, he said he hopes to remain in New England.

“I wouldn’t mind being here. I do want to be here, obviously,” Boutte said. “I mean, at the end of the day, I do want to be here. So whether that’s X, Z, F, like just whatever I got to do, that’s best for me… There’s only one football. There’s five of us, you know, but that’s football.”

Boutte was the Patriots’ main X-receiver a year ago. That’s also the position that Brown plays. As Boutte said above, he’s willing to play any receiver position on the field.

On Tuesday, Boutte didn’t catch a pass from Maye, but had one reception from Tommy DeVito.

“All opportunities that do come to me, like I said, I got to make the best of them,” Boutte said.

Offensive line rotation includes rookie

It’s a good thing the Patriots drafted Caleb Lomu.

Last week, right tackle Morgan Moses left practice with an unknown injury. On Tuesday, the veteran wasn’t at the first day of minicamp. That led to more opportunities for Lomu.

The Patriots first-round pick was the team’s top right tackle on Tuesday. That is likely a sign of things to come as the team drafted Lomu to one day succeed Moses, who turned 35 this offseason.

Lomu, however, also showcased his versatility. The rookie also played left tackle at one point for the Patriots’ second-team offense.

The Patriots also started Will Campbell (left tackle), Alijah Vera-Tucker (left guard), Jared Wilson (center) and Michael Onwenu (right guard). Vera-Tucker was replaced by veteran backup Ben Brown in the first 11-on-11 period. That also happened during OTAs.

What’s happening with Gabe Jacas?

One of the biggest mysteries in New England revolves around the Patriots’ second-round pick, Gabe Jacas.

As of this week, the team has signed every draft pick other than Jacas, who was selected with the 55th pick. On Tuesday, Jacas was one of three players not at minicamp, joining Harold Landry and Moses.

Before practice, Mike Vrabel said all Patriots players who were under contract were at Gillette Stadium. Then, he noted that Jacas was not a part of the group here in Foxborough.

“He had a procedure, and he is not under contract,” Vrabel said.

It’s unknown why Jacas isn’t with the Patriots. However, Patriots outside linebackers coach Mike Smith did say the rookie is missing valuable time with the team.

“I mean, it would hurt anybody, unless you’re somebody like Harold that’s probably played 10, 11, 12 years, there’s not much that he hasn’t seen,” Smith said. “It’d be the same thing during the season if a guy missed a couple days in training camp here. But he’s a smart kid, and when he gets here, we’ll get rolling.

“I kind of stay away from whatever’s going on with him right now and all that stuff. But if we’re going to be honest, it does (hurt) a little bit.”

Stefon Diggs Ordered To Explain Relationship With Male Sexual Assault Accuser

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs

Stefon Diggs Ordered To Explain Relationship With Male Sexual Assault Accuser originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

For one reason or another, Stefon Diggs seems to always be involved in an ongoing court proceeding.

The 32-year-old wide receiver is still looking for his next team after being released by the New England Patriots in March.

On top of that, Diggs has recently been ordered by a judge to explain how he knows his male sexual assault accuser, TMZ reports.

"Stefon Diggs is being ordered to finally explain how he knows the man accusing him of sexual assault ... because a federal judge says calling him an 'acquaintance' just isn't good enough," the TMZ report read.

"According to new court documents, obtained by TMZ Sports, the judge ruled on a series of discovery disputes last week in Diggs' ongoing legal battle with Christopher Blake Griffith ... the man who has accused the NFL star of drugging and sexually assaulting him in 2023 ... allegations Diggs has repeatedly denied."

Diggs launched a defamation lawsuit in response to Griffith's claims.

Diggs was famously plagued by an ongoing felony strangulation lawsuit that arose in the middle of the Patriots' Super Bowl run last season. The case dragged on until well after the Patriots lost the Super Bowl, with the wide receiver eventually being acquitted on all charges.

At long last, football is back in Foxboro. Mandatory mini-camp kicked off for the New England Patriots on Tuesday. There were not many headlines to be made, but Kayshon Boutte and Christian Gonzalez showing up was a promising development.

Perhaps the most unforeseen lineup wrinkle came when rookie first-round draft pick Calbe Lomu was slotted in with the starting offensive line on his first day with the team.

Morgan Moses's injury is a mystery. Sources say he was seen leaving the building on Tuesday accompanied by a trainer. No further comment has been made by the New England front office or the veteran right tackle.

His absence comes after months of speculation that Moses could hang up his cleats following the team's Super Bowl loss. When New England traded up to get Lomu, it was apparent they were doing so with their sights set on the Utah native joining the Patriots starting rotation in 2027. It is now possible that the timeline could become accelerated.

When Lomu was not working with the first team -- as he did for the majority of the day -- he was playing left tackle on the second team.

Head coach Mike Vrabel has made it clear all offseason that second-year left tackle Will Campbell's position is not set in stone. Having the six-foot-six rookie understudy him could be a nice fire to light under the 22-year-old Campbell.

Interestingly enough, Campbell and Lomu were both born in 2004. If all works out for the two Patriots first-rounders, fans could be looking at their starting tackles for the next decade plus.

Patriots Insider Casts Doubt On Reunion With Stefon Diggs

Former New England Patriots Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs

Patriots Insider Casts Doubt On Reunion With Stefon Diggs originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New England Patriots released Stefon Diggs in the offseason, but some fans are still holding out for a reunion.

Eliot Wolf has not closed the door on a reunion. However, he made it seem like it would take an injury or major change to the team for the team to bring him back.

"I never like to rule anything out. There's always different scenarios that come up, whether you have an injury or a scheme shift or whatever the case may be, so don't want to close the door on anything," Wolf said in March.

Diggs was the Patriots' leading receiver last year, but the team upgraded at the position after releasing him. They signed Romeo Doubs and traded for A.J. Brown. While Diggs could join them to make an elite trio, Patriots insider Mike Reiss thinks it's unlikely.

"I would be surprised myself," Reiss said on WBZ CBS News Boston on Tuesday. "No one has told me this, but my feeling when they moved on from him was that both sides said, 'This was great for the year. Let's go our separate ways,' with the idea that we're not going to close the door and say it can't happen... My hunch is he's just waiting around the league for an opportunity. I don't know where that may be, but for a player of his caliber, he might be more inclined to wait until training camp. I don't know what he's thinking."

Diggs was a great player for the Patriots, but it seems likely that his run with the team ends after one season. Barring an injury between now and the start of the season, Diggs will likely be playing elsewhere.

Expert: Mike Vrabel’s Dianna Russini scandal strategy ‘is a disaster’

Mike Vrabel
Credit: New England Patriots

The winds have died down around the Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini controversy, but that doesn’t mean the New England Patriots coach is out of the woods yet.

The Athletic’s investigation into former NFL insider Russini’s reporting around Vrabel and other topics, which will be released publicly, is still a few weeks out.

Not to mention, there’s no telling when Russini might break her silence and drop a tell-all.

After attempting to laugh off the photos of him and Russini together as “laughable,” Vrabel has tried to half-heartedly apologize and hope everyone moves on.

Crisis communication experts have long said that until the NFL coach fully comes clean in an authentic way, the wound at the center of this controversy will continue to be picked at.

Molly McPherson, a crisis communications and strategy expert, has been saying for some time that the strategy won’t work. And she reiterated that stance this week in an interview with USA Today.

“Vrabel is running, in my opinion, a staged rehabilitation, albeit somewhat clumsily,” McPherson told USA Today Sports. “Everything he’s doing is sequenced to move from that initial denial in the beginning to where we are now.”

McPherson told USA Today that she would suggest Vrabel do a sit-down interview with a news outlet where he could lay out the truth and take full accountability.

“He still hasn’t taken accountability, so people are still going to look for it,” she said. “Accountability that only activates when you get caught isn’t accountability. And Mike Vrabel hasn’t taken any accountability. He’s only spoken publicly about what he’s doing privately as a person.”

McPherson added that it’s not as though many people are calling for Vrabel’s job because of the scandal. If anything, the lack of fear around losing his position should invite more accountability.

“People are not holding NFL coaches to a moral standard where they can never cheat, and if they cheat they have to lose their jobs,” McPherson said.

The TikTok-famous crisis communication expert added that Vrabel has made several good starts, such as missing Day 3 of the draft to spend time with his family and admitting he’s had difficult conversations with his family and the team. However, the entirety of the head-in-the-sand strategy hasn’t been as successful as it might seem in this moment.

“The sum is a disaster,” she said.

Kayshon Boutte Explains OTAs Absence; Clarifies Desire To Stay With Patriots

The New England Patriots started mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, and Kayshon Boutte was in attendance. Boutte missed OTAs, and there were rumors that he was skipping because of the Patriots' addition and pursuit of A.J. Brown.

Boutte is in a contract year, and the addition of Brown figures to impact his role in the offense. He figures to be the No. 3 receiver, and it would make sense if he wanted to be dealt to a team where he can put up better numbers before hitting free agency. However, Boutte clarified that his OTAs absence had nothing to do with Brown or trade rumors, according to Taylor Kyles of CLNS.

Not only did Boutte clarify that his absence had nothing to do with Brown, but he also made it known that he wants to be a Patriot. Ultimately, he understands that it's up to the team if he gets traded, but he has no problem with being on the Patriots.

“I wouldn’t mind being here," Boutte told reporters, per Patriots insider Phil Perry. "I do want to be here."

Boutte could end up being a great piece of the Patriots' offense alongside Romeo Doubs and Brown. He may not put up big numbers, but he still brings a unique skillset, and last season, he proved he can work well with Drake Maye.

Patriots Stick To NFL Trend With 2nd-Rd Pick Refusing To Sign

Illinois Fighting Illini outside linebacker Gabe Jacas

Patriots Stick To NFL Trend With 2nd-Rd Pick Refusing To Sign originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

Last year, the Cincinnati Bengals became the most infamous example of the negotiating power of a team's draft pick when first-round selection Shemar Stewart nearly returned to Texas A&M after a contract dispute that lasted well into August.

All around the NFL, 2025 second-round draft picks were holding out from mandatory mini-camps and OTAs as their agents fought for more player-friendly deals. The Cleveland Browns broke the ice when they agreed to fully guarantee the contracts of both of their second-round picks that year.

New England Patriots 2025 second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson did not sign his own contract until July 19. He was the final member of the draft class to put pen to paper.

Henderson was able to get his four-year contract fully guaranteed when he did finally sign.

The cycle has repeated itself in 2026; 28th overall pick Caleb Lomu signed his Patriots contract on Monday, making 55th overall selection Gabe Jacas the final player holding out.

Jacas is no doubt looking to execute the same game plan.

Some of this year's second-rounders have been able to land fully guaranteed deals. Edge rushers T.J. Parker and R Mason Thomas, who were taken 20 and 15 picks before Jacas, respectively, got all of their money guaranteed.

But the other draftees selected in the 50s who have already signed have done so under the pretense of about 80-90% of their contracts guaranteed.

I suspect Jacas' deal will get done next week and land closer to that of the other players selected in the 50s, rather than following Henderson's blueprint.

Insider Thinks It Would Be 'Surprise' If Christian Gonzalez Does Not Report To Camp

New England Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez

Insider Thinks It Would Be 'Surprise' If Christian Gonzalez Does Not Report To Camp originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New England Patriots start mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, and Christian Gonzalez's attendance will be something to keep an eye on.

Gonzalez is reportedly looking for a contract extension. and did not report to the team's voluntary OTAs. He is one of the best corners in the league, and the team has already expressed interest in an extension. However, no deal has been reached yet. Regardless, Patriots insider Mike Reiss thinks it would be surprising if Gonzalez did not report.

"The presence of cornerback Christian Gonzalez (contract) and wide receiver Kayshon Boutte (trade rumors) are among the Patriots' notable camp storylines," wrote Reiss. "It would be a surprise if Gonzalez didn't report for camp, while Boutte told WBZ-TV reporter Aaron Parseghian that he will be there for Day 1 on Tuesday."

Just because Gonzalez reports does not mean he will participate. If he is holding out for an extension, he may not feel comfortable risking injury. The longer extension talks drag out, the longer it may take Gonzalez to get on the field.

Mike Vrabel was asked about a potential holdout last week and noted that he does not want to get into details. However, he did share that he expects Gonzalez to be at the mandatory minicamp and be ready for the season.

“Well, I think that there’s, the contract is the business and the professional side of this,” said Vrabel in a Tuesday press conference.  “The personal side, I don’t want to let anything interfere with that. I want Christian to be ready when he comes back. And I would imagine that he would be here next week. And, if he is, then we’ll coach him and be ready to move on and get him ready and get him ready to help us, and help himself. Contracts are part of professional sports. I understand that. But I also know that those should remain private. And, like any contract, you want to make sure (it’s) a negotiation that everybody feels like they get something out of it. And I’ll leave it at that.”

Philadelphia Sports Columnist Tabs A.J. Brown 'Obvious Traitor,' Rips Patriots WR Over Eagles Exit originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

After months of speculation, A.J. Brown was officially traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New England Patriots on June 1.

Brown's highlights during his four seasons with the Eagles are obvious -- two Pro Bowl nods and a Super Bowl title.

The 28-year-old wide receiver wore out his stay in Philadelphia though and many Eagles followers aren't disappointed to see him go.

That includes Marcus Hayes of The Philadelphia Inquirer, who compared Brown's exit to former Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Wentz's trade out of the City of Brotherly Love in March 2021.

"A.J. Brown now is a Patriot, an ironic misnomer since he’s such an obvious traitor," the sports columnist wrote. "Philadelphians generally seem relieved that Brown’s diva act no longer will be a distraction for a perennial title contender. That’s just A.J. fatigue. What he has done is no better than what Carson Wentz did five years ago: hamstrung his franchise, dissed the fan base, and hung his teammates out to dry."

Brown inked a three-year, $96 million contract extension with the Eagles in April 2024, 10 months before Philadelphia won Super Bowl LIX, but "spent most of the next two years complaining," according to Hayes.

"His main complaint: His skills were being wasted in an Eagles offense designed by (head coach) Nick Sirianni and quarterbacked by Jalen Hurts, even though it was potent enough to win Super Bowl LIX," he wrote.

The Eagles and Patriots will take part in a joint practice in August, which will surely have the attention of NFL fans across the country.

New Report Reveals Reason A.J. Brown Was Frustrated With Jalen Hurts

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown

New Report Reveals Reason A.J. Brown Was Frustrated With Jalen Hurts originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New England Patriots traded for A.J. Brown this offseason, and his relationship with Jalen Hurts was reportedly one of the reasons he wanted out of Philadelphia.

After being traded to the Patriots, Brown did an interview with Maria Taylor. In that interview, he confirmed that he and Hurts were not as close as they once were. Brown noted that people simply grow apart, but it was evident that he was frustrated on the field at times. A new report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Sarah Barshop, Mike Reiss, Daniel Oyefusi and Tim McManus sheds some light on Brown's frustrations.

"A good bit of his angst stemmed from the play of Hurts, league sources said, in part because of Hurts' perceived reluctance to target Brown on tight-window throws against zone coverage," wrote ESPN on Monday.

Brown is a three-time Pro Bowler and helped the Philadelphia Eagles win a Super Bowl. He is clearly a productive player, but apparently, he felt like he could have been even more involved in the Eagles' offense. He posted at least 1,000 receiving yards in each of the last four seasons, but his numbers had been slightly declining.

Last season, he had just 1,003 yards. Brown is an elite receiver and he knows it. He wants the ball in his hands, and if Hurts was not getting it to him, it makes sense that he was frustrated. While the Patriots do have Romeo Doubs, he does not pose the same threat to Brown's target share as DeVonta Smith did.
