Google Drive Adds a Simple New Way to Protect Shared Files

AH Google Drive 2024 image 6

Google Drive is improving the security of user data when it comes to file-sharing. After a new update, Google Drive now allows its users to set expirations on shared files and folders. The new feature ensures that access to such files automatically expires after a selected period by the sharer. Google Drive’s new functionality is useful for teams that handle confidential files, temporary projects, or sensitive client materials.

Google Drive users can now set expiration dates on shared files and folders

In 2023, Google introduced a new change in the Google Drive API, which allowed users to set an expiration date on files and folders that reside in shared drives. However, now Google Drive users can set expirations on shared files directly from the sharing dialog. The much-anticipated functionality brings the ease and security of My Drive access controls into collaborative shared drives, Google mentioned in a blog post.

After the new update, Google Drive can set an expiration date in the sharing dialog box for temporary collaborators using the “Add expiration” option from the drop-down menu. Once the expiration date passes, the system will automatically revoke access for other users, eliminating the need for manual backups.

Furthermore, Google Drive now allows users to apply an expiration date to the “Viewer role” for shared Drive folders. This allows you to automatically remove read-only access to files in the folder once a collaborator no longer needs it.

Google is also standardizing access expiration across Google Drive

Alongside the new Shared Drive update, the tech titan is also standardizing the expiration behavior in “My Drive. Earlier, if you gave someone temporary Editor access to a file within a folder, they could only view it later and lost access completely once that permission expired.

Now, when temporary Editor access ends, the user’s permission automatically reverts to the level they have on the parent folder, which is usually Viewer. It means the collaborators still keep basic access instead of losing it entirely.

Google Drive has started rolling out the new feature to Google Workspace customers, including Business, Enterprise, and Education editions. Personal Google Account users will get the new functionality in the coming weeks. Since it’s a gradual rollout, it could take a few weeks to reach all Google Drive users globally.

Currently, you can set sharing expirations on the web and on Android devices. iOS device users can’t set the same in My Drive or shared drives yet.

Xiaomi 17 Ultra May Sport the Largest Camera Sensor Ever in a Phone

Xiaomi 15 Ultra AM AH 04

Xiaomi launched the 17 series of flagship smartphones, including the Xiaomi 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, several weeks ago. The firm is now planning to introduce the highly anticipated “Ultra” variant in the series soon. A tipster recently revealed major details regarding the phone’s camera specs. Now, the same source suggests that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will feature the largest camera sensor ever found on a phone.

Xiaomi could offer the largest phone camera sensor on the 17 Ultra

According to Digital Chat Station, a reliable gadget tipster on China’s Weibo, the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will feature the largest camera sensor ever found on a smartphone. It will have a big circular camera module like the Xiaomi 15 Pro, instead of a small rear display, to accommodate the bigger lens.

Apart from the largest camera sensor, Xiaomi will equip the 17 Ultra with “exclusive new telephoto technology” (machine translated), as per the source. Additionally, the device will have a new external lens solution, which will allegedly surpass all currently available options on the market.

Earlier, the same source claimed that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will have a new 50MP main camera with a significantly larger sensor and improved in-sensor zoom tech. The telephoto lens will use a new 200MP large-sensor periscope shooter, offering multiple focal lengths without deteriorating image quality.

Sharing key specs with the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max

The tipster also claimed that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will share most of its key specs, including the display, chipset, speakers, vibration motor, and fingerprint sensor, with the 17 Pro Max variant.

If the information is correct, we can expect Xiaomi to fit the new Ultra model with a 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED 120Hz display. Under the helm, it could also feature the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5: the latest flagship chipset on the market. The device will also be available in a “prestigious gold color,” mentioned the source.

Xiaomi hasn’t yet revealed when it’ll launch this year’s Ultra flagship smartphone. So far, the reports indicate that the firm could unleash the new photography beast at some point in the first quarter of 2026.
