Addy Brown scores season-high 28 points in No. 10 Cyclones' 81-53 win over UNI, Audi Crooks sits out

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Addy Brown had 21 of her season-high 28 points in the first half, and No. 10 Iowa State routed in-state rival Northern Iowa 81-53 on Sunday with national scoring leader Audi Crooks sitting out with an injury.

Crooks, who averages 27.6 points per game, was injured Wednesday in the Cyclones' win over No. 11 Iowa. She was expected to finish return-to-play protocol early this week, the school announced, without disclosing the nature of the injury.

The Cyclones (12-0) are out to their best start since the 2013-14 team was a program-best 14-0.

Alisa Williams made her first career start in Crooks’ place and scored 11 points and grabbed five boards.

Brown knocked down four 3-point shots in the first half, and the Cyclones broke open the game with a 34-6 run spanning the first and second halves. The lead grew to 33 points in the middle of the fourth quarter.

Jada Williams had eight assists to go with 10 points.

Iowa State was 12 of 29 on 3s (41.4%), scored 22 points off the Panthers' 16 turnovers, and had assists on 20 of its 30 field goals.

Brown shot 8 of 13 from the field in the first half, including 4 of 5 on 3s, as the Cyclones wiped out an early deficit and took control in the second quarter.

The Panthers (4-6), who upset Iowa State 87-75 last season, got 13 points from Abby Tuttle. It was UNI's second game against a Top 25 opponent. The Panthers lost to Iowa on Nov. 16.

Guenther scores in OT to complete Mammoth's 5-4 comeback win over reeling Penguins

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dylan Guenther scored 42 seconds into overtime and the Utah Mammoth rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-4 on Sunday.

Guenther, who has five goals in his last four games, beat Sergei Murashov with a wrist shot from the slot. Utah won its second straight following a three-game losing streak.

Michael Carcone scored twice for Utah, while Nate Schmidt and Sean Durzi also added third-period goals, as the Mammoth briefly pulled ahead, 4-3, after trailing 3-0 entering the final 20 minutes.

Karel Vejmelka made 12 saves.

Justin Brazeau scored twice for Pittsburgh and Bryan Rust scored in his third straight game. Ben Kindel also scored on a breakaway and added two assists.

Sidney Crosby’s four-game point streak ended and he remains within two of tying Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux’s franchise record for career points.

Kris Letang had an assist to pass Hall of Famer Borje Salming for the 21st-most points by a defenseman in NHL history.

Murashov stopped 32 shots.

Pittsburgh earned a point for the ninth time in 11 games, but the Penguins lost their fifth straight. The Penguins, who are 1-9 in overtime, blew a 5-1 third-period lead against San Jose on Saturday and lost to Anaheim earlier this week after the Ducks forced overtime with one-tenth of a second left.

Utah needed just six minutes to erase a three-goal deficit and take a brief third-period lead.

Schmidt scored off a rebound at 1:07 of the third and Carcone scored his first goal at 1:22 when he banked his own rebound off Murashov’s back. Durzi tied the game at 5:35 on a shot through traffic. Pittsburgh challenged it for goaltender interference. When the goal was upheld, Carcone gave the Mammoth a 4-3 lead with a power-play goal on a one-timer from the right circle.

Brazeau tied it at 14:06 when he tipped Erik Karlsson’s point shot behind Vejmelka.

Pittsburgh played again without goaltender Stuart Skinner and defenseman Brett Kulak, who were acquired Friday from Edmonton in a trade for Tristan Jarry and Sam Poulin. Skinner and Kulak were granted non-roster status to settle the immigration process.

Williams throws 4 TD passes and Washington has 5 INTs in 38-10 rout of Boise State in LA Bowl

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Demond Williams Jr. threw three of his four touchdown passes in the second quarter, and Washington's defense had five interceptions as the Huskies kicked off bowl season with a 38-10 victory over Boise State in the LA Bowl on Saturday night.

Denzel Boston made a 78-yard TD catch for Washington's first score before Dezmen Roebuck, Raiden Vines-Bright and Quentin Moore caught TD passes for the Huskies (9-4) in the school's fourth victory in its last five bowl games.

Coach Jedd Fisch’s Huskies had no players opt out of bowl participation from their solid Big Ten roster, and it showed in their overwhelming performance against the Mountain West champion Broncos (9-5). Washington scored 38 consecutive points after yielding a field goal on Boise State's opening drive.

Jonah Coleman rushed for 86 yards and a TD in his final game at Washington, while Boston had six catches for 125 yards in what might be the junior star’s farewell.

Washington dominated its LA Bowl debut in the fifth and possibly final edition of the postseason game created in tandem with SoFi Stadium, which opened in 2020 for the city’s two NFL teams. Bowl officials haven’t confirmed reports the game won’t be played next year.

Maddux Madsen threw two interceptions in a 51-yard first half before sitting down for the Broncos, who dropped to 0-3 in the bowl games following their three straight conference titles under coach Spencer Danielson. Madsen wore a protective boot while watching the second half of his second game back from a month's absence with a lower leg injury.

Max Cutforth did little better, throwing three more interceptions — including two on consecutive plays — before finishing with 202 yards passing and a late TD.

Boise State also lost the LA Bowl to UCLA in 2023, but made the College Football Playoff last season.

Williams passed for 214 yards while throwing four TD passes in a bowl game for the second time. Williams also did it last December in the Sun Bowl, and he finished a solid sophomore season with one dynamic throw after another.

The Huskies broke out midway through the second when Boise State’s secondary left their best receiver running alone down the middle. Boston went untouched for his 11th receiving TD and the 20th of his career, the eighth Huskies receiver to hit that mark.

Two snaps after Williams hit Roebuck for a 6-yard TD, Madsen threw an atrocious interception to Rahshawn Clark. Williams found Vines-Bright for the freshman's first TD with 1:17 left.

On Washington's first drive after halftime, Moore fought off a defender to catch a 32-yarder for the tight end's second TD in four seasons — although a spoilsport official flagged Moore for unsportsmanlike conduct when he celebrated with a powerful Gronk Spike in a bowl game hosted by tight end Rob Gronkowski.

Cutforth threw an end-zone interception to Leroy Bryant in the fourth quarter, and 295-pound edge rusher Deshawn Lynch returned another interception 57 yards on Boise State's next snap.

Takeaways

Boise State: Neither Madsen nor Cutforth looked good, and their performances raise questions about the Broncos' future under center. Madsen could return for his senior year, while Cutforth wasn't exceptional in his late-season opportunity.

Washington: The Huskies played superbly under Fisch despite getting one week to prepare for a low-stakes game 1,150 miles from Seattle with 23,269 fans in attendance. Michigan's potential interest in Fisch also clearly wasn't a distraction to a program on the rise.

Up next

Boise State: The Broncos move to the revamped Pac-12 next season with expectations of contending for a title, although their year begins with a nonconference gauntlet against Oregon and Memphis.

Washington: The Big Ten won't get any easier, but the Huskies are a fundamentally sound team. Fisch said Friday he expects this team to contend for the College Football Playoff in 2026.

Jackson Blake scores in shootout as East-best Hurricanes top Flyers 4-3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jackson Blake scored in the shootout, and the Eastern Conference-best Carolina Hurricanes beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 on Saturday night to open a home-and-home set.

Seth Jarvis scored his 18th goal, Nikolaj Ehlers and Alexander Nikishin also scored and Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists for the Hurricanes, who have won two consecutive shootouts. Carolina has won three straight and six of eight overall.

The teams relocate to Raleigh, North Carolina, to play again Sunday night.

Bobby Brink, Trevor Zegras and Carl Grundstrom scored for the Flyers, who concluded their six-game homestand with a 2-2-2 record.

Flyers goalie Sam Ersson made the only two saves in overtime, off shots from Gostisbehere and, with about 10 seconds left, veteran Jordan Staal. Ersson finished with 18 saves.

Philadelphia missed all four attempts in the shootout before Blake beat Ersson to end it.

The Flyers had one of their best opening periods of the season. Brink made a move at the blue line and fired a shot past goalie Pyotr Kochetkov’s glove for a 1-0 lead.

Konecny made a backhand pass across the crease to a charging Zegras, who jammed the puck home to make it 2-0.

The Hurricanes tied it in the second. Midway through the period, Gostisbehere smoothly intercepted an outlet attempt, then passed to Ehlers, who unloaded a wrist shot over Ersson’s glove.

Nikishin unloaded a would-be pass toward Mark Jankowski, but the puck detoured off Philadelphia center Noah Cates’ skate and slipped past Ersson to make it 2-2.

Jarvis put Carolina ahead 3-2 with 7:34 left in the game, but Grundstrom tied it 17 seconds later on a breakaway.

The Flyers had just 18 shots against Kochetkov, who stopped 15.

Swords and Solfilkanich score 17 points each as No. 6 Michigan beats Akron 85-59

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Syla Swords and Ashley Sofilkanich both had 17 points to lead five Michigan players in double-digit scoring, and the sixth-ranked Wolverines beat Akron 85-59 on Saturday.

Michigan (9-1) pulled away for good early in the second quarter, fueled by its defense. In the first half, the Wolverines forced 16 turnovers and generated 17 points off them. Michigan’s average of forcing 25.4 turnovers per game ranks eighth nationally and first in the Big Ten.

Shaena Brew led the Zips (1-8) with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, adding four rebounds and five assists.

The Wolverines took a 48-30 halftime lead, shooting nearly 50% from the floor. Kendall Dudley hit a 3-pointer from the corner late in the first half, pushing Michigan’s lead to 20 before the break.

The Wolverines outscored Akron 50-22 in the paint, with Michigan’s production primarily coming from transition layups. Entering the game, the Wolverines averaged 13.9 steals per game. They finished Saturday's game with 13.

Michigan’s defense powered its transition offense, highlighted by Sofilkanich and Olivia Olson both reaching season-highs with four steals.

Olson finished with 16 points, while Mila Holloway had 12 and Te'yala Delfosse had 10.

The Wolverines sliced through the Zips’ defense and Akron’s delayed defensive rotations resulted in frequent fouls. The Wolverines drew 28 fouls, but made only 17 of 30 free throws — far below their team average of 70.1% from the line.

After topping the century mark in two of its last three games, the Wolverines’ 4-of-13 shooting clip from 3-point range marked its smallest margin of victory since a 72-69 loss to No. 1 UConn on Nov. 21.

Shaena Brew led the Zips (1-8) with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting, finishing with four rebounds and five assists.
