Spring Festival Celebrations and Community Engagement

The festival’s opening included a customary blessing ritual consisting of handing out couplets and “Fu” (blessing) characters that are instrumental to the Chinese New Year. The event titled “Ten Thousand Blessings for the Spring Festival” had almost 90,000 participants in 3 days. Volunteers and staff, who were blessing the families of Guiyang, were able to distribute about 4,000 pairs of couplets and blessings.

Deputy Director of the Confucius Academy’s Center for Cultural Communication, Zhai Jia, stated that this event has become a constant feature of the Academy during the Spring Festival, as it champions the spirit of selfless service and community involvement. The tradition of blessing writing and giving has been sustained over the years, and has offered the community the opportunity to meaningfully engage with the core elements of the Chinese cultural heritage. The Academy intends to build on these objectives and initiatives, as it remains committed to the cultivation of traditional culture in all walks of life in the community, and the cultural revitalization of the Chinese civilization in the community.

Cultural Arts and Traditional Craftsmanship

When visitors entered the Confucius Academy, they saw a number of booths demonstrating different interactive activities of Chinese arts and crafts. The “Intangible Cultural Heritage” interactive section at the Etiquette Square was particularly busy and was an area where visitors could experience activities. Skilled artisans demonstrated local crafts such as Miao silver pattern painting and decorated clay whistles. Children were enthralled while they created their own designs on the clay whistles and were introduced to the traditional folk art crafts of the Miao community.

Robotic sugar painting was also an attractive activity where visitors of all ages were entertained as syrup was meticulously painted into different shapes as they transformed the sugar syrup into different artistic shapes. These activities created an experience with modern interpretations of traditional craftsmanship and an interactive, enjoyable time for all ages. The ability of the younger generation to appreciate the intricate beauty of China’s cultural heritage is a positive reflection on the parents.

As part of Spring Fest, performance celebrations showcased Chinese traditional music and its modern adaptations. The “Treading Songs through Streams and Mountains—Elegant Tunes Celebrate Spring” performance series presented six themed audio-visual feasts that featured traditional Chinese and Western music. This gave visitors an engaging experience.

Musicians and performers alternated between traditional and contemporary Chinese musical elements. This showcased the diversity of Chinese culture. Founder of the Qianyuefu Jazz Band, Luo Qing’an, looks forward to further collaboration with the Confucius Academy. He hopes to adapt local operas and ethnic minority music in future works. The ongoing cultural adaptations show Guiyang’s commitment to its rich musical heritage.

Alongside the cultural performances, the festival also hosted a number of contests, including the highly anticipated lantern riddle guessing games that take place on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. Participants of all ages, and in particular the children, created an energetic and joyful environment. Winners received prizes that ranged from bamboo lanterns and flower twisting kits, all of which are part of the intangible cultural heritage of China. In addition to the elements of competition, this activity helped the participants gain a better understanding of symbols, traditions, and the cultural heritage of China.
