Samsung boosts R&D spending to power the future of AI

Samsung has increased its spending on research and development (R&D) to grow its business in AI chips. In 2025, the South Korean technology company spent 37.7 trillion won (about $25.6 billion) on research. This is the highest amount the company has spent on R&D so far.

According to Samsung’s annual business report, the company’s R&D spending in 2025 was 7.8 percent higher than in 2024. In 2024, the company spent about 35 trillion won on research. This shows that Samsung is increasing its investment in technology every year.

Most of this money was used to develop advanced memory chips. These include high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and high-capacity DDR5 chips. These chips are very important for artificial intelligence systems because they help computers process large amounts of data faster.

The demand for these memory chips is rising quickly as big technology companies expand their AI infrastructure. Companies such as AMD, Google, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Nvidia are using these chips in their AI data centers and cloud services.

Aside from this, Samsung also spent a lot of money on improving its factories. In 2025, the company invested 52.7 trillion won (around $35.7 billion) in its facilities. This money was used to upgrade semiconductor factories and build new research centers.

One important project is the NRD-K complex at Samsung’s Giheung campus in Yongin, South Korea. The company also shipped the first batch of mass-produced HBM4 chips recently. Samsung plans to continue investing in advanced memory technology to meet the growing demand for AI.
