New England Patriots Way-Too-Early 53-man predictions: Patriots' draft reloads roster for a potential Super Bowl sequel

Now that the NFL Draft is over, it's all about focusing on figuring out the 53-man roster for the New England Patriots.

The New England Patriots are aiming to return to the Super Bowl and wash out the bad taste of last year’s bitter defeat. After a robust 2026 NFL Draft class, there stands to be some changes to the roster.

Who's in? Who's out? Here is how I'd project the 53-man roster moving forward.

Note: Players with a single asterisk (*) are 2026 draft picks and players with double asterisks (**) are 2026 undrafted free agents.

New England Patriots Way-Too-Early 53-man roster prediction

Quarterback (2)

IN: Drake Maye, Tommy DeVito
OUT: Behren Morton*

The skinny: No surprises here with the top two. Drake Maye should continue to play at an MVP level. I’m not sure if Morton will be rostered every week, and seems likely to be snuck through as a PS member to be the emergency quarterback on gamedays.

Running back (4)

IN: Rhamondre Stevenson, TreVeyon Henderson, Jam Miller*, Reggie Gilliam (FB)
OUT: Lan Larison, Terrell Jennings, Elijah Mitchell, Myles Montgomery**, Brock Lampe

The skinny: The top two backs are locked in with Stevenson and Henderson. The selection of Jam Miller is a perfect complement, and he should lock up the RB3 job early on in the room. Reggie Gilliam’s ability to handle running back and tight end duties allows them to get flexible with the roster numbers.

Wide Receiver (7)

IN: Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte, Kyle Williams, Mack Hollins, Pop Douglas, Efton Chism III, Kyle Dixon**
OUT: Jeremiah Webb, John Jiles, Nick DeGennaro**, Jimmy Kibble**, Cameron Dorner**

The skinny: I’m not entirely convinced this is how this room will look when the preseason begins (cough cough). However, with no additions in the draft, I’m pretty confident in everyone from last year keeping their jobs heading into this year. UDFA Kyle Dixon got a massive $252k deal in guarantees to sign, giving him pretty good odds of being a promising lock.

Tight End (4)

IN: Hunter Henry, Julian Hill, Eli Raridon*, Tanner Arkin**
OUT: Jack Westover, CJ Dippre, Marshall Lang,

The skinny: Head coach Mike Vrabel said the team wanted to get more multiple, and I believe. Henry is the obvious TE1, but I think Eli Raridon can be a contributor early on. Hill was brought in to improve their run blocking, and I think Arkin can make the roster for the same reasons. With Gilliam rotating into this room as well, it’s bully ball time in New England.

Offensive Line (9)

IN: Will Campbell, Alijah Vera-Tucker, Jared Wilson, Mike Onwenu, Morgan Moses, Caleb Lomu*, Dametrious Crownover*, Ben Brown, Caedan Wallace
OUT: James Hudson III, Marcus Bryant, Lorenz Metz, Sebastian Gutierrez, JonDarius Morgan**, Jacob Rizy**, Mehki Butler, Andrew Rupcich

The skinny: The starting lineup should remain the same as it was heading into the draft, but the depth is dramatically improved. Caleb Lomu and Dametrious Crownover likely lock up the depth tackle spots, pushing Hudson and Bryant out. Ben Brown and Caedan Wallace are valuable swing linemen as well.

Defensive Tackle (6)

IN: Milton Williams, Christian Barmore, Cory Durden, Joshua Farmer, Eric Gregory, Leonard Taylor III
OUT: Jeremiah Pharms Jr., David Blay Jr.**

The skinny: Surprisingly, the New England Patriots didn’t draft a single defensive tackle after being rumored to for months. This room should still be a strength of the team. However, they are banking on a lot of young talent in Farmer, Durden, and Taylor to take that next step.

Edge Rusher (5)

IN: Harold Landry, Dre’Mont Jones, Gabe Jacas, Elijah Ponder, Quintavyious Hutchins*
OUT: Bradyn Swinson, Jesse Luketa, Korey Foreman**

The skinny: Mike Vrabel has frequently rostered four edge rushers, but this room is too deep to do so this year in my opinion. The starting three is set with Landry, Jones, and Jacas. However, Elijah Ponder was a tremendous rookie on special teams. I think Hutchins’ draft capital might give him the edge over a disappointing rookie season from Bradyn Swinson.

Linebacker (4)

IN: Robert Spillane, Christian Elliss, Namdi Obiazor*, K.J. Britt
OUT: Chad Muma, Otis Reese, Amari Gainer, Jordan Kwiatkowski**

The skinny: Spillane and Elliss will be their starting linebackers, to no surprise. However, don’t be shocked if Obiazor carves out a strong role, especially on early downs. Britt is the special teams ace of the room, and that will be his ticket onto the roster over the field.

Cornerback (5)

IN: Christian Gonzalez, Carlton Davis III, Marcus Jones, Karon Prunty*, Kindle Vildor
OUT: Charles Woods, Kobee Minor, Marcellas Dial Jr., Brandon Crossley, Kenneth Harris**, Channing Canada**

The skinny: New England had their starting trio set heading into the draft, while Vildor adds inside-outside ability. The addition of Prunty likely rounds out the room, keeping out the field.

Safety (4)

IN: Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson, Brendan Schooler, Dell Pettus
OUT: Mike Brown, John Saunders Jr.

The skinny: There was some speculation the Patriots could draft a safety this year. However, the team didn’t, locking up the same rotation as they had pre-draft. Byard and Woodson should be one of the best safety duos in the AFC. Meanwhile, Schooler and Pettus are valuable special teams assets.

Specialists (3)

IN: Julian Ashby (LS), Andy Borregales (K), Bryce Baringer (P)
OUT: Niko Lalos

The skinny: There weren’t any additions to compete at kicker or punter, locking in Borregales and Baringer. The battle between Ashby and Lalos could go into camp, but I have to imagine the draft capital and experience of Ashby would win out in the end.

The New England Patriots got busy quickly on the undrafted free agent market following the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft.

They brought in four pass catchers from varying levels of college football. But when it came time to find a tight end, the Patriots front office went to the Big 10 and landed Illinois Fighting Illini team captain Tanner Arkin.

Arkin is not exactly a threat in the passing game.

In five collegiate seasons, Arkin finished with just 351 total yards and six touchdowns.

He started his career at Colorado State University, but transferred to Illinois as a junior. He was clearly thought of very highly in Champaign, as he was named team captain in each of his final two seasons with the Illini.

What he lacked in the passing game, he made up for in the running attack as MassLive's Mark Daniels pointed out.

"Arkin is a blocking tight end who earned a 79.5 run blocking grade from Pro Football Focus," Daniels wrote.

Arkin walks into a crowded tight end room, headlined by long-time Patriot Hunter Henry. Free agent signee Julian Hill and third-round draft pick Eli Raridon also project to make the 53-man, leaving Arkin to compete with practice squad TE CJ Dippre.

The New England Patriots, like several other teams around the league, wasted no time on Saturday night inking undrafted free agents after the 2026 NFL Draft concluded.

Among those signed, wide receiver Kyle Dixon received the biggest contract. This is bizarre considering Dixon did not even compete in the NCAA.

Dixon played for Cluver-Stockton College, which competes at the NAIA level.

NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reported that the contract includes more than a quarter million dollars in guarantees.

NAIA to NFL: Former Culver-Stockton College WR Kyle Dixon is signing with the Patriots on a deal with $252,500 in guarantees.

Dixon was invited to Missouri's pro day, where he absolutely showed out.

He measured in at 6-foot-2, nearly 220 pounds, and posted a 40.5-inch vertical jump.

While at Culver-Stockton, Dixon was heavily featured in the passing game. This past season, he caught 83 balls for 1,282 yards and 12 touchdowns. This added to a 12-touchdown season the year prior and capped off his college career with 143 receptions, 2,394 yards and 24 touchdowns.

He will walk into a very crowded receiver room in New England and has a very steep uphill battle to make the roster.

Patriots Executive Eliot Wolf Denies Mike Vrabel Rumor Following NFL Draft

Patriots Executive Eliot Wolf Denies Mike Vrabel Rumor Following NFL Draft originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel stepped away from the team on Saturday for the final day of the 2026 NFL Draft as he underwent counseling.

ESPN's Peter Schrager reported Saturday that according to "Patriots sources," the team was in "constant contact throughout the day."

Patriots Executive Vice President of Player Personnel Eliot Wolf dismissed that report at the conclusion of the event.

"So last night, you know, we kind of talked through things and made the decision that, you know, the time away really needs to be time away," Wolf said, according to MassLive's Mark Daniels. "So we were not in contact with Mike today other than some just 'hope everything’s going okay' kind of text early this morning."

It's been almost three weeks since Vrabel and former NFL insider Dianna Russini became embroiled in scandal when the New York Post shared photos of the duo at a luxury hotel in Sedona, Ariz.

Russini ultimately resigned from her position with The Athletic.

The NFL decided not to pursue further action against the two-time AP Coach of the Year, but the controversy kicked up a notch when Vrabel revealed he'd be seeking counseling and would be away from the team on Saturday.

Soon after that, pictures of Russini and Vrabel sitting closely together and at one point, appearing to kiss, at a bar on March 11, 2020, were released.

The Patriots released a statement in support of the former Pro Bowl linebacker on Thursday, shortly before the NFL Draft kicked off.

UDFA tracker: Every undrafted rookie Patriots signed after 2026 NFL Draft

The 2026 NFL Draft came to an end on Saturday evening with the Patriots putting a bow on their most recent draft class.

In the first three rounds, the Patriots hammered their major draft needs by selecting tackle Caleb Lomu, edge rusher Gabe Jacas and tight end Eli Raridon. Eliot Wolf didn’t sit back and wait. Instead, he used multiple Day 3 picks to trade up to draft Jacas and Raridon.

Those deals left the Patriots without a fourth-round pick on Saturday. In the end, the team drafted six players in the final three rounds: cornerback Karon Prunty, tackle Dametrious Crownover, linebacker Namdi Obiazor, quarterback Behren Morton, running backj Jam Miller and edge rusher Quintayvious Hutchins

Now, the fun starts with the post-draft process as the Patriots and other teams sign undrafted free agents. This has been an important team-building step for the Patriots in years past.

Last year, several undrafted rookies finished the season on Mike Vrabel’s 53-man roster: receiver Efton Chism III, edge rusher Elijah Ponder and tight end C.J. Dippre. The Patriots franchise has a long history of successful undrafted free agents, notably David Andrews, Jonathan Jones, Malcolm Butler, Jakobi Meyers and J.C. Jackson.

Here’s a full rundown of all the Patriots 2026 undrafted free agent signings (note - until the team announces it, some of these might be rookie minicamp invites):

Jacob Rizy, guard, Florida State

K'Lavon Chaisson Shares Video Of When He Learned Patriots Rejected Him

Washington Commanders edge rusher K'Lavon Chaisson

K'Lavon Chaisson Shares Video Of When He Learned Patriots Rejected Him originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

We no longer need to speculate about why the Patriots didn't re-sign K'Lavon Chaisson.

The veteran edge rusher enjoyed a career-best season in 2025, posting 7.5 sacks and 10 tackles for a loss in his first season with New England. However, the Patriots passed on re-signing Chaisson in favor of signing edge rusher Dre'Mont Jones away from the Baltimore Ravens. Chaisson eventually signed a one-year, $11 million deal with the Washington Commanders.

This week, Chaisson shared a clip of the moment his agent informed him that New England would move on. The agent also told Chaisson why the Patriots let him walk.

"Just giving you a heads up, I talked to the Patriots -- I've been trying to get them to make an offer on you," the agent told Chaisson. " ... There thing was, ‘We love K’Lavon, we just need somebody that plays the run a little bit better.' "

Commanders OLB K’Lavon Chaisson released the footage of when he was informed the #Patriots were not going to offer him a new contract, and instead opted to sign Dre’Mont Jones.

Time will tell whether the Patriots were right to prioritize Jones over Chaisson, who seemingly was a great fit in Mike Vrabel's defense. But it's true that Chaisson occasionally struggled against the run, something Jones excels at.

The Patriots boosted their pass rush on Friday by selecting Illinois linebacker Gabe Jacas in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Patriots Banking On Athleticism, Upside With Selection Of Eli Raridon

New England Patriots tight end Eli Raridon

Patriots Banking On Athleticism, Upside With Selection Of Eli Raridon originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

The New England Patriotsselected tight end Eli Raridon with the No. 95 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Raridon, who benefitted from an unexpected run at the position earlier in the night, went earlier than expected. The Patriots certainly don't mind the pick being labeled as a reach, however, because he has the athletic profile to become an elite player in the coming years.

Raridon's full draft profile can be found below, along with quotes from experts, the team, and... well, me:

— New England Patriots (@Patriots) April 25, 2026

WHAT THE EXPERTS ARE SAYING:

Raridon is still figuring things out, but he gets to top gear quickly and has promising ball skills and blocking chops. His college tape shows the building blocks of an intriguing pro-level tight end, although the medicals will influence his draft projection. - The Athletic's Dane Brugler

The former basketball star was a hot riser in the predraft process, with many teams highlighting him as a potential Round 3 pick if there was an early run on tight ends. There was, and Raridon goes to a team that needed to get younger and faster at the position with 31-year-old Hunter Henry having only one year left on his contract. Raridon didn't have great stats in college (only 48 career catches), but banking on his above-the-rim ability and inline-blocker upside at this point in the draft is solid strategy. - ESPN's Matt Miller

Projects as a “Y” tight end with the ability to play and produce on all three downs. In the pros, Raridon might spend more time with his hand in the ground than he did at Notre Dame. He blocks with solid technique and good tenacity but still needs to add muscle mass to his long frame. The Notre Dame passing attack opened him up on intermediate hash throws against zone but he also has sneaky build-up speed and ball skills to make catches down the field. Raridon needs more experience but is an ascending talent who should become the seventh Notre Dame tight end drafted over the last nine years. - NFL Media's Lance Zierlein

WHAT THE PATRIOTS ARE SAYING:

"I'm versatile. I can do both things in the pass and blocking game, and make explosive plays with the ball in my hands." - Eli Raridon

"I thought the new facilities were awesome...really excited to be part of an organization with such great leadership." - Eli Raridon

"Tremendous athlete. One-year player who overcame injuries at Notre Dame... you can just see his confidence growing and growing. He's probably more of a pass-catcher, but a willing blocker." - Eliot Wolf

"We didn't think Eli was going to be there after all those tight ends started going, but we thought maybe if we sat there it would work out for us." - Eliot Wolf

WHAT I'M SAYING:

PLAYER BREAKDOWN: Raridon's athletic ability is the reason that he was even in consideration to be taken as early as he was, which is saying something considering the fact that he finished with just 48 receptions across 40 career games at Notre Dame -- but running just take a look at those numbers up above, folks.

I'd imagine there will be a focus on adding size, but there shouldn't be any doubt about whether or not he can contribute in the running game as he was one of the reasons the Fighting Irish had one of the best rushing attacks in the nation in 2025.

PICK BREAKDOWN: The Patriots are in good hands as they look to develop a relatively raw athlete behind Hunter Henry, while he'll be able to learn a lot from the likes of Julian Hill and Reggie Gilliam. New England needed to put itself in position to start that process sooner rather than later, and was able to do so while also making more important picks earlier in the draft.

Patriots Predicted To Draft 6-Foot-6, 23.3-Sack Pass Rusher To Replace K'Lavon Chaisson

Penn State defensive lineman Dani Dennis-Sutton

Patriots Predicted To Draft 6-Foot-6, 23.3-Sack Pass Rusher To Replace K'Lavon Chaisson originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.

One of the biggest needs for the Patriots heading into the 2026 NFL Draft was a pass rusher, but New England didn't address that gap in the first round. Instead, it opted to take Utah offensive tackle Caleb Lomu with the 28th pick.

New England may look to address its pass-rushing needs with its second pick at No. 63. Jacob Camenker of USA Today predicted that the Patriots will select Dani Dennis-Sutton, a pass rusher from Penn State, with that choice.

"The Patriots had just 35 sacks during the 2025 NFL season, tied for seventh-fewest in the league, and lost one of their top sack artists, K'Lavon Chaisson, in free agency," Camenker wrote on Friday.

"Dennis-Sutton is a thickly-built edge setter who should be a solid run defender from the jump. The 6-6, 256-pound edge rusher has the tools needed to continue growing as a pass rusher after logging 8.5 sacks in each of his final two seasons at Penn State."

The 22-year-old pass rusher had a standout four-season career at Penn State, where he recorded 127 combined tackles, 34.5 tackles for loss and 23.5 sacks over 55 games.

Before the season began, many draft experts believed that Dennis-Sutton could be a first-round pick. However, Penn State had an underwhelming season, with several players underperforming. This could be a reason why his draft stock took a hit.
