Big Ten thumps chest over rare football, hoops title sweep

The Michigan Wolverines ended a 26-year streak of men’s basketball futility for the Big Ten on Monday, April 6.

With its 69-63 victory over the UConn Huskies, Michigan claimed the Big Ten’s first men’s hoops crown since the Michigan State Spartans won the 1999-2000 title.

The win gave the Big Ten a rare sweep of NCAA football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball titles. The Indiana Hoosiers won in football, and the UCLA Bruins took home the women’s hoops crown, the conference’s first since Purdue in 1999.

Not surprisingly, the Big Ten is proud of the accomplishment. “HOME TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPS IN ALL THREE!” the conference posted on X. “Go B1G or go home,” the post’s graphic proclaimed.

The only other conference to accomplish the feat is the SEC. In the 2006-07 school year, the Florida Gators won the BCS National Championship and the NCAA men’s basketball title, while the Tennessee Lady Vols took the women’s basketball crown.

Until now, the SEC was widely considered the top conference in college sports. The 2025-26 school year is the first since 2018-19 in which no SEC team won a national crown in the big three sports.

The Big Ten signaled its emergence as the nation’s top conference by winning three consecutive College Football Playoff National Championship titles. Michigan, Ohio State and Indiana claimed the titles in the 2023-25 seasons.

On3 reporter Brett McMurphy addressed the subject of Big Ten dominance and how the SEC is responding. He suggested the age of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) has leveled the playing field.

“From 2006-22, SEC teams won 13 [football] national titles in 17 years. Then something funny happened. The start of NIL payments (Now It’s Legal) has coincided with the end of the SEC’s dominance and the Big Ten’s rise,” McMurphy wrote.

Finally, the Big Ten may not be done just yet in the winter season. In this weekend’s Frozen Four, Michigan and Wisconsin are vying for a men’s hockey title. The Wisconsin women’s hockey team won its second consecutive NCAA title by beating Ohio State in the final.
