Jerry Jones makes stance clear on Brandon Aubrey amid contract standoff

The Dallas Cowboys have been moving fast this offseason. Running back Javonte Williams is in. Wide receiver George Pickens got the franchise tag. But one piece of business still has not wrapped up, and it involves their record-setting kicker.

Brandon Aubrey remains without a new contract, even though he’s been one of the best stories in Dallas over the past two seasons. The 30-year-old owns the NFL record with six made field goals from 60 yards or beyond, and he is looking to reset the market at his position.

Last NFL season alone, Aubrey connected on 36 of 42 field goal attempts across 17 games while missing just one extra point out of 47 tries. Those numbers put him in rare company, and now he wants to get paid like it.

Negotiations have been dragging on, and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally addressed the situation during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis. Jones invited local reporters onto his luxury bus Friday for what turned into more than an hour of conversation, and he did not dodge the Aubrey question.

β€œI think he’s outstanding,” Jones said. β€œLove his story, love the fact that the story is with the Cowboys. We feel good that what we are talking about is an appreciation of what he can do for us. That’s a way of, not trying to negotiate with anything I might say here, but we’ve got a good offer on the table for him.”

The Aubrey situation has been the talk of the week. Reports surfaced earlier claiming the kicker was asking for around $10 million annually, a figure that raised plenty of eyebrows around the league.

Aubrey and his wife quickly shot down those reports, calling them inaccurate. The denial cooled things down temporarily, but questions remain about where the two sides actually stand. Jones making it clear that Dallas values Aubrey and believes they have presented a fair offer adds some clarity, but this thing is not done yet.
