Former Los Angeles Dodger Chris Taylor has revealed what caused so much public confusion the weekend he decided to retire.

Last month, the Minor League Baseball transaction log indicated Taylor, who was playing for the Los Angeles Angels’ farm system, had decided to retire.

That Friday evening news shot around the baseball world, especially among Dodgers fans, who fondly remember his big hits and incredible catches.

Then, Taylor seemed to reverse course, announcing that he’d instead go on the injured list for a fractured forearm he suffered when he was hit by a pitch.

That wouldn’t last, though, as he soon took to Instagram to share the news himself that he would indeed be retiring from professional baseball.

What caused the confusion about Chris Taylor’s retirement?

Speaking with David Vassegh on “Dodger Talk” on AM 570 LA Sports, Taylor explained the plan was always to retire.

It instead was a “leak” that forced Taylor’s hand, he said.

“Long story short, I was at the Salt Lake Bees at the time. I told them that I was done. I got hit by a pitch and fractured my arm first. I don’t think a lot of people know that,” he said. “But I told them that was probably it for me, I’m going to go home with my family. So I signed the papers, and I think it was voluntary retirement. So that was the transaction, and that got released right away. Then we had it switched to the IL just to try to keep it under wraps a little bit, but it was too late at that point. And then when it got switched, people thought I unretired and was coming back. It was very strange.”

Chris Taylor’s legacy as a Dodger

After the initial news of Taylor’s retirement, there were many tributes from Dodgers fans, and manager Dave Roberts even chimed in with his own thoughts on Taylor as a player he managed for years.

“He’s had a great career. He got everything out of his ability. He was a great teammate. I was fortunate enough to coach him,” Roberts said.

“I hope he, [his wife] Mary and the kids can ride off into the sunset. He does a lot of stuff for their foundation. He was a joy, a complete pro.”

Dodgers Nation’s Nelson Espinal also detailed some of Taylor’s greatest postseason moments with the Dodgers.
