Caleb Williams’ breakout season with the Chicago Bears has created a new nickname in the NFL, but it has also sparked an unexpected dispute with one of basketball’s most recognizable legends.

According to Fox Business, the Bears quarterback recently filed trademark applications for “Iceman,” a moniker that gained traction after his late-game performances during Chicago’s playoff run.

But just days later, NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin moved to protect the same nickname, arguing that he has been associated with “Iceman” for decades.

Williams’ filing came after a season in which the second-year quarterback became one of the NFL’s fastest-rising stars. According to the trademark applications, he is seeking to use “Iceman” on a wide range of merchandise, including footballs, apparel, backpacks, water bottles, sunglasses, posters, and digital trading cards.

The filings also include two silhouettes based on Williams’ dramatic fourth-and-8 completion to Rome Odunze against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC wild-card round.

The issue is that “Iceman” has long been linked to Gervin, whose smooth scoring style made him one of the NBA’s defining players of the 1970s and 1980s. Gervin became known by the nickname during his playing career and has used it commercially for years.

Four days after Williams filed his applications, Gervin submitted trademark filings of his own, stating that he has used “Iceman” in connection with goods and services since 1979. Gervin also spent part of his NBA career with the Chicago Bulls, creating an unusual connection between the two athletes and the city of Chicago.

Gervin made clear that his issue is not with Williams personally, but with the use of the name itself. “I’ve got nothing but respect for [Williams],” Gervin said. “He’s already proved greatness and his potential upside is great. Like an ‘Iceman.’ But that name is taken. All I’m saying is: Young fella, we’ve already got one ‘Iceman.’”

Jerald Barisano, president and CEO of Gervin Global Management, said the organization believes the nickname is inseparable from Gervin’s legacy. “All they’ve got to do is one Google search, and they’ll see hundreds and hundreds of articles on the ‘Iceman,’ George Gervin,” Barisano said.

The dispute arrives at a time when Williams’ profile is rapidly expanding. After being selected first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, he led the Bears to an NFC North title and a trip to the divisional round in his second season.

Williams threw for 3,942 yards, added 489 rushing yards, and accounted for 27 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions. His 4,352 total yards set a new franchise record for a Bears quarterback.

For Gervin, however, “Iceman” is not just a marketing slogan. It is one of the most enduring nicknames in sports history. The Hall of Famer was a 12-time All-Star across the NBA and ABA, won four scoring titles, averaged 25.1 points per game, and was named to the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

Trademark officials will now have to decide whether one of sports’ most famous nicknames can belong to a new generation, or whether there is still room for only one “Iceman.”
