Detroit Lions No. 1 Training Camp Battle Could Go Down to the Wire
The Detroit Lions entered the offseason believing they had their starting cornerback duo set.
Then everything changed.
Following the release of former first-round pick Terrion Arnold, one of the biggest storylines heading into training camp has become the battle for the starting cornerback job opposite free-agent addition D.J. Reed. While several players will get an opportunity to compete, this position could remain unsettled until the final weeks of camp.
Rock Ya-Sin vs. Ennis Rakestraw
The two leading candidates appear to be veteran Rock Ya-Sin and 2024 second-round pick Ennis Rakestraw.
Ya-Sin enters camp with the experience advantage after revitalizing his career during the 2025 season. He has proven he can compete against NFL receivers and may be the early favorite to line up alongside Reed when practices begin.
Rakestraw, however, may possess the higher ceiling.
The former Missouri standout flashed plenty of potential before a training camp injury wiped out his rookie season. If he can stay healthy and put together a strong camp, the Lions could decide his long-term upside outweighs Ya-Sinβs veteran experience.
Other Names to Watch
The competition likely wonβt be limited to just two players.
Roger McCreary remains an intriguing option, although he appeared destined to become Detroitβs starting nickel corner before Arnoldβs release created an opening on the outside.
Meanwhile, rookie Keith Abney II could force his way into the conversation if he impresses the coaching staff throughout camp and preseason.
A Battle That Could Last All Summer
Cornerback may now be the most competitive position battle on Detroitβs roster.
The Lions have enough talent to field a quality secondary, but finding the right player to complement D.J. Reed will be one of the coaching staffβs biggest priorities over the next several weeks.
If Rakestraw develops quickly, he could seize the job before Week 1. If not, Ya-Sinβs experience may prove too valuable to overlook.
Either way, donβt expect this competition to be decided anytime soon. It has all the makings of a training camp battle that could go right down to the wire.
