Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra might feature advanced face unlock technology

7 November 2025 at 22:54

Samsung is reportedly working on a big upgrade for the face unlock system on its future Galaxy S27 Ultra. According to new information, the company could use a new technology that is much better and more secure than the current one.

Right now, Samsung phones mostly use a 2D image from the selfie camera to unlock the phone with your face. It works fine, but can be fooled and doesn’t always perform well in poor lighting. The new system, called Polar ID, could change that.

A tipster, @SPYGO19726, on X claims that early test software for the Galaxy S27 Ultra mentions “Polar ID v1.0.” It’s said to be a “polarized-light authentication system,” connected to Samsung’s ISOCELL Vizion front sensor and a new security setup known as BIO-Fusion Core.

Samsung highlights 1.2.15

This new face unlock method might work much faster, around 180 milliseconds, and offer stronger protection against fake faces or photos. It could also recognize users even when they’re wearing sunglasses or masks, and it should work in most lighting conditions.

Still, it’s important to remember that this is only a rumor. The Galaxy S27 Ultra isn’t expected until 2027, so things could easily change before then. For now, Samsung fans can look forward to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, which should launch soon. But if this new Polar ID feature turns out to be real, the Galaxy S27 Ultra could offer one of the fastest and most secure face unlock systems.

Galaxy S27 Ultra Could Ditch IR for All-New ‘Polar ID’ Face Unlock System

7 November 2025 at 19:31

Samsung might be looking to change up its face unlock technology for the Galaxy S27 Ultra in 2027.

Rumors are pointing to “Polar ID v1.9” in early test firmware, and other internal logs describe it as a “polarized-light authentication system”. Which means Samsung could be ditching the infrared hardware.

This would be a pretty big pivot for Samsung with its face unlock technology, since the infrared hardware allows for a detailed 3D scan of the face, similar to Apple’s Face ID. It appears that this is being referenced to the “front ISOCELL Vizion sensor and a new secure enclave routine labeled BIO-Fusion Core.”

Apparently, the new face authentication mechanism boasts an unlock latency of around 180ms and it also offers improved resistance to spoofing vs the standard face unlock that has been available on the Galaxy S series.

Take this all with a grain of salt

It’s important to take all of this with a grain of salt, since the Galaxy S27 Ultra is still about 15 months away. And at this point in the development cycle, Samsung is still working on several prototypes of the phone, likely with different versions of face authentication. So this could end up happening, it could also end up being shelved.

Most smartphone makers finish their devices about 6 months ahead of the release; hardware is usually done closer to a year before release. With other minor things being tweaked in the meantime.

Of course, more secure face unlock is always welcomed, and needed. Especially if we’re going to use this as authentication into apps, like banking apps. While many still believe that fingerprint unlock is more secure, face unlock can be much more secure, as long as the hardware is there to make it more secure. This is why Apple’s Face ID uses so much hardware in the iPhone.

Samsung has yet to unveil its Galaxy S26 lineup. However, its Galaxy S27 series, which won't come out until early 2027, has already begun attracting rumors and tidbits, with the latest one focusing on the S27 Ultra's novel face authentication mechanism. Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra might sport a new "polarized-light" face authentication mechanism, sans dedicated infrared (IR) hardware A tipster, who goes by the username @SPYGO19726 on X, has just posted that Galaxy S27 Ultra's early test firmware references "Polar ID v1.0" under the biometric security framework, with the accompanying internal logs describing the term as a "polarized-light authentication system." iPhone 18 Pro camera and battery leaks draw the battle lines for Galaxy S27 Ultra

Apple has recently introduced the iPhone 17 series with a major design overhaul, and leaks about the iPhone 18 Pro have already started to emerge. Meanwhile, Samsung is gearing up to launch the Galaxy S26 series early next year.

iPhone 18 Pro leaks signal major camera and battery upgrades on the table. Apple is reportedly testing new camera and battery technologies. The upgrades make Samsung’s future Galaxy Ultra mission crystal clear.

HIAA Camera Hole

Weibo leaker DigitalChatStation claims that Apple has a new HIAA punching technology under consideration. This solution is said to be utilized for the camera hole design to reduce the size of holes, potentially a punch hole display.

Variable Aperture Camera

The source reiterated that Apple is actively testing variable aperture for the primary sensor. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are rumored to be equipped with a continuous zoom camera sensor, replacing the legacy solutions.

If Apple brings a variable aperture camera to next year’s iPhone, Samsung will be forced to raise the bar on the Galaxy S27 Ultra. That said, Samsung fans would see some biggest upgrades in battery and camera in 2027.

Steel-shell Battery

Another big upgrade is said to land in the battery department. The US tech giant is allegedly developing a steel-shell battery technology. The so-called product is being considered for the power management module.

If testing goes well and results are satisfactory, the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max will be the first models to launch with a steel-shell battery.

Transparent Camera Island

iPhone 18 Pro will retain the large camera island that debuted in the iPhone 17 Pro. However, the iPhone maker might consider bringing “transparent design elements” to the camera bump, making it look a little different than the OG version.

Galaxy S27 Ultra Vapor Chamber Prototype Allegedly Gets Pictured, Puts Every Other Solution To Shame, But Don’t Get Your Hopes Up

6 November 2025 at 14:25

Galaxy S27 Ultra is allegedly being experimented with a massive vapor chamber, according to image shared by tipster

Samsung has always made the vapor chamber a standard on its high-end smartphones, with the ‘Ultra’ variant getting treated to the largest solution. However, the company could make a drastic decision with the Galaxy S27 Ultra, which will help take its cooling capabilities beyond what current-generation devices are capable of housing. A tipster shared an alleged image of a prototype vapor chamber that is being tested for the Korean giant’s next-generation flagship, and to say that it is thick would be a gross understatement. The tipster says the actual vapor chamber will be shrunk down to be outfitted in the Galaxy […]
