Mitchell City Golf Tournament set to tee off July 11-12 at Lakeview

Jun. 30β€”MITCHELL β€” The annual Mitchell City Golf Tournament is set to return the weekend of July 11-12 at Lakeview Golf Course, giving local golfers another opportunity to compete for top city honors.

The two-day individual stroke play tournament will feature men's and women's championship divisions, along with senior men's and senior women's divisions. Golfers competing in the senior divisions must be at least 55 years old.

Men's competitors will begin play on Saturday, July 11 through Sunday's final round, while the women's divisions will consist of one full round on Sunday, July 12. Lakeview will assign first-round pairings and tee times within each flight. Tee times on both Saturday and Sunday for both divisions will range from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Following Saturday's opening round on the men's side, golfers will be re-paired by flight and score for Sunday's final round.

Players will compete from different tee boxes depending on their division. The championship flight will be played from the blue tees, handicap flights from the white tees, senior men from the gold tees and senior women from the red tees.

The entry fee for the golf tournament is $50 and does not include a cart fee, which is $23 for 18 holes, and the registration deadline is Monday, July 6. Golfers can sign up by calling Lakeview Golf Course at (605) 995-8460 or stopping by the Lakeview clubhouse.

Lakeview is also planning to add a junior city tournament on Sunday, July 12, if there is enough interest. The junior event will include boys and girls divisions with a $10 entry fee. Golfers ages 9-and-under will play six holes, while the 10-13 age group will compete over nine holes using age-appropriate tee boxes.

Eliason, Dannenbring pace area golfers at SDGA Sanford International Series in Sioux Falls

Jun. 30β€”SIOUX FALLS β€” Mitchell golfers Anna Eliason and Asher Dannenbring turned in the top performances among area competitors at the South Dakota Golf Association Sanford International Series, held Monday and Tuesday, June 29-30.

The two-round event was played at Prairie Green Golf Course on Monday before concluding Tuesday at Willow Run Golf Course in Sioux Falls.

Eliason, a rising senior at Mitchell High School, climbed one spot on the leaderboard during the final round to finish fifth in the girls division with a two-day total of 158. After opening the tournament with an 82 at Prairie Green, Eliason responded with a 6-over-par 76 on Willow Run's par-70 layout, improving by six strokes from her first-round score.

The strong closing round left Eliason just one stroke shy of a three-way tie for second place. Sioux Falls' Stella Smith, Flandreau's Tori Peterson and Dakota Dunes' Katie Betsworth each finished at 157, while Sioux Falls' Ari Jacobs captured the tournament title with a two-round score of 155 after rounds of 74 and 81, respectively.

Eliason's final round featured a 4-over-par 38 on the front nine before she matched that score with another 38 on the back. Her closing nine included two birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey, allowing her to move past Watertown's Gabi Olson and secure fifth place in the final standings.

Among other area golfers, Chamberlain's Trey Speer placed 11th with a 166 total, while Mitchell's Mia Larson finished 17th after recording a two-round score of 175.

Dannenbring made one of the tournament's biggest moves up the boys leaderboard. The rising Mitchell senior jumped 10 spots from 16th after the opening round into a tie for sixth place with Crooks' Nick Simon after finishing with a 151 total. Dannenbring opened with a 78 on Monday before shaving five strokes off his score in the final round, carding a 3-over-par 73 at Willow Run.

Crooks' Drew Simon claimed the boys championship with a two-round total of 144 after rounds of 70 and 74. Brandon's Will Peterson finished second at 145, while Twin Brooks' Jonathan DeBoer placed third with 149. Elk Point's Ben Akin and Sioux Falls' Carter Peterson shared fourth place at 150, one stroke ahead of Dannenbring and Simon.

Other area boys competitors included Parkston's Landon Weber, who tied for 21st with a 156 after matching rounds of 78, while Mount Vernon's Trysten Eide finished 48th with a 169 total following rounds of 85 and 84.

Dannenbring, who won earlier this season in the series, is tied for the boys series lead with 100 points with Sioux Falls' Trevor Rick. The girls points lead is held by Kaitlin Strain, of Rapid City, who has 170 points, with Ari Jacobs in second with 100 points.

Two regular-season Sanford International Series stops remain, with the next stop on July 6-7 playing at Moccasin Creek Golf Course and Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen. The series will play in Spearfish on July 15-16 before the series championship on July 20 at Sutton Bay Golf Course in Agar.
