Knicks Snap Celtics’ Winning Streak In Super Bowl Sunday Blowout

Super Bowl Sunday did not get off to a great start for Boston sports fans.

The Boston Celtics had their five-game winning streak snapped by the New York Knicks on Sunday afternoon, enduring one of their worst losses of the season. The Knicks throttled the Celtics 111-89 at TD Garden, sending Celtics fans home in a foul mood before their New England Patriots take on the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl LX tonight.

For the second time in as many games, Boston got off to a terrible start, trailing by 11 points at the end of the first quarter. Unlike on Friday against the Miami Heat, however, the Celtics were unable to mount a comeback.

Boston cut the deficit to seven points at halftime but fell apart in the second half, scoring just 36 points after halftime. The 89 points were a season low for the Celtics, who shot just 37.0% from the field and went an abysmal 7-for-41 (17.1%) from beyond the arc. New York made 7 more 3-pointers than Boston, and that was the difference.

Jaylen Brown played well for the Celtics with 26 points and 4 assists. Derrick White scored 19 points, while Baylor Scheierman led the team with 13 rebounds and chipped in 10 points.

Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 31 points and 8 assists, while Josh Hart scored 19 points and Karl-Anthony Towns notched a double-double.

Both teams are now tied for the second-best record in the Eastern Conference at 34-19, five games behind the Detroit Pistons. New York owns the tiebreaker, though, by virtue of leading the season series 2-1

The 22-point loss was Boston’s second-biggest defeat of the season, behind only its 27-point loss to the Houston Rockets on Nov. 1. Surprisingly, both of those blowouts happened at home.

The Celtics will look to bounce back and end their homestand on a high note against the Chicago Bulls on Wednesday. It will be Nikola Vucevic’s first game against his former team since being traded to Boston last Tuesday, while the Celtics will welcome back Anfernee Simons to TD Garden.
