MLB insider names Yankees top target at trade deadline

The New York Yankees are expected to be among the busiest buyers at this year’s MLB trade deadline, and a new report suggests they have identified their biggest target. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Yankees have their sights set on San Diego Padres All-Star closer Mason Miller, one of the most dominant relief pitchers in baseball. If New York can pull off the blockbuster deal, it could dramatically reshape an already talented bullpen for the second half of the season.

Mason Miller Is Having a Historic Season

Miller has elevated himself into the conversation as the best reliever in Major League Baseball in 2026. Through the All-Star break, his numbers have been nothing short of extraordinary:

  • 0.91 ERA
  • 0.78 WHIP
  • 72 strikeouts
  • 25 saves
  • 38 appearances
  • 39.2 innings pitched

While every statistic is impressive, the strikeout total is perhaps the most eye-opening. Recording 72 strikeouts in just 39.2 innings is a remarkable feat and highlights why Miller is so difficult for opposing hitters to solve. In today’s game, swing-and-miss stuff is the most valuable weapon a late-inning reliever can possess, and few pitchers miss bats as consistently as Miller.

Why the Padres Could Listen

Trading a reliever of Miller’s caliber would normally seem unthinkable. However, San Diego’s position in the standings has changed the equation.

The Padres have fallen well behind in the National League West and are barely hanging onto contention in the NL Wild Card race. If the front office determines that the team isn’t built for a deep postseason run this year, moving Miller while his value is at an all-time high could bring back a significant package of young talent.

It’s never easy to part with an elite closer, but relievers often command massive returns at the trade deadline when contenders become desperate for bullpen help.

A Dream Scenario for the Yankees

Adding Miller would give New York arguably the most intimidating back end of any bullpen in baseball. Pairing him with current closer David Bednar would allow manager Aaron Boone to shorten games to eight innings, creating matchup nightmares for opposing offenses in the postseason.

With the Yankees expected to contend for another American League pennant, strengthening the bullpen has become one of the organization’s top priorities.

If Jon Heyman’s report proves accurate and Mason Miller truly is at the top of New York’s wish list, the Yankees could be preparing to make one of the biggest moves of the trade deadline—and one that could significantly improve their World Series chances.
