A resurfaced Kyrie Irving tweet is fueling fresh NBA trade speculation — and Minnesota Timberwolves fans are running with it.

According to Sporting News, shortly after the Dallas Mavericks parted ways with head coach Jason Kidd, an old social media post from Irving’s 2017 free-agency period began circulating online again. In the post, Irving identified Minnesota as one of his preferred destinations before he was ultimately traded from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Boston Celtics.

Nearly a decade later, with Dallas entering another organizational reset, the timing of the tweet’s return has reignited talk of Irving potentially landing in the Twin Cities.

The renewed chatter comes as league insiders increasingly expect teams to explore Irving trade scenarios this offseason, even after the nine-time All-Star missed the entire 2025-26 season recovering from ACL surgery.

NBA reporter Marc Stein recently noted there is “anticipation leaguewide” that the Mavericks could receive calls about Irving regardless of whether Dallas actively shops him. That conversation has only intensified following Kidd’s exit and the arrival of Masai Ujiri as the Mavericks’ new president of basketball operations.

Minnesota’s interest is tied closely to Anthony Edwards, who has reportedly made it known privately that he wants to play alongside Irving. A Timberwolves source described the potential pairing as “sweet,” while another league figure told Brandon “Scoop B” Robinson that “Irving in Minnesota makes the Timberwolves a contender.”

The idea of pairing one of the league’s most explosive young stars with one of its most skilled veteran guards has quickly become one of the NBA offseason’s loudest rumors.

Irving’s future in Dallas suddenly looks less stable than it did a year ago. The veteran guard signed a three-year, $119 million extension after helping lead the Mavericks to the 2024 NBA Finals, but the franchise has since spiraled into chaos.

Luka Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in the blockbuster move that reshaped the organization; Anthony Davis lasted only 29 games before being moved again; and Kidd exited after reportedly unsuccessfully pushing for expanded control over basketball operations.

According to Robinson’s reporting, Kidd “wanted out” after Patrick Dumont hired Ujiri instead of elevating the coach into a larger executive role. Kidd’s departure marked another dramatic shift for a Mavericks franchise that has spent the past two seasons dismantling the core that reached the Finals.

Dallas is now reportedly preparing to build around Rookie of the Year Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 overall pick who arrived after the team’s collapse following the Dončić trade.

That uncertainty is why Irving’s name keeps surfacing across the league. The Timberwolves are believed to be searching aggressively for a veteran playmaker, while the Houston Rockets are also reportedly monitoring Irving’s availability.

Any deal would be complicated by salary-cap restrictions and Irving’s no-trade clause, but the conversation is no longer staying quiet behind the scenes.
