MKBHD’s 2025 awards overlook Galaxy S25 Ultra?

Samsung phones won two awards in the Smartphone Awards 2025 announced by YouTuber Marques Brownlee. However, Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra was totally overlooked in MKBHD’s Smartphone Awards 2025.

MKBHD picked Galaxy Z Flip 7 as the “Best Small” and Galaxy Z Fold 7 as the “Best Foldable.” The overall winner was iPhone 17, which is already breaking records with its sales, pushing Apple to surpass Samsung this year.

Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra was the strongest contender for “Best Big” and “Best Camera” categories. However, these tags have been awarded to Xiaomi’s 17 Pro Max and Oppo’s Find X9 Ultra, respectively.

The awards seem to have a balanced approach to include almost every brand. There’s the OnePlus 15, which was termed the Best Battery phone. The device packs a 7,300mAh battery with an advanced silicon-carbon cell.

Galaxy S25 Ultra should have been considered in the Best Big category, given its international availability. Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is impressive, and its secondary display makes it even more intuitive, but it’s limited to China.

Oppo’s Find X9 Ultra gives tough competition to the Galaxy S25 Ultra in terms of camera capabilities. Samsung’s flagship nails with its cutting-edge hardware and professional software-derived photography features.

Galaxy S25 Ultra’s sales were sizzling, and it gained praise from every corner. Upgraded Galaxy AI and practical camera experiences are just amazing. Meanwhile, the device lacks flashy changes in hardware, which is a minus point.

Well, the awards are derived from his own perspective. Chinese vendors are doing better with faster hardware adoption. Slowly but steadily, brands like Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and OnePlus are increasing the threat to Apple and Samsung.

Galaxy S26 Ultra is under development and slated for launch early next year. The device replicates the entire camera setup from its predecessor, and the only change is likely in the Telephoto module, which could be a new sensor.

YouTuber Marques Brownlee, well-known as MKBHD, just dropped his Smartphone Awards for 2025. Like always, there were some pretty big surprises in this year’s awards, and they were not the ones everyone expected.

In the Smartphone Awards 2025 by MKBHD, Samsung flagged two major wins in crucial categories. Its Galaxy S25 Ultra wasn’t the Best of 2025, but the two victories are worth praising and align with user sentiments.

Award Winners – Samsung

In “Smartphone Awards 2025,” MKBHD reviews the year’s best and worst smartphones across various categories, highlighting key features and innovations.

Best Small Phone

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7

For Best Small Phone, MKBHD gave the crown to the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7. A foldable won the “small phone” category because when it’s closed, that 4.1-inch cover screen is actually useful now, and it still opens up to a big 6.9-inch display.

Runners-up included the OnePlus 13S, iPhone 17/17 Pro, and Xiaomi 17 Pro.

Best Foldable was the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which finally feels like a mature daily driver with a much thinner design when closed and solid software support. Samsung’s upgrades paid off in sales, and the device is also getting praises from reviewers.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold and the Z Flip 7 rounded out the category.

Non-Samsung award winners

Best Big Phone went to the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max.

Camera of the year was a landslide for the Oppo Find X9 Pro.

Best Value shocked everyone: the CMF Phone 2 Pro at just $279.

Battery champ was the OnePlus 15 with its insane 7300 mAh silicon-carbon cell.

The Design award went to the iPhone Air, even though Apple is struggling with sales and considering dumping the segment.

Most improved was the iPhone 17 lineup, which finally got 120Hz screens across the board, a way better selfie camera, doubled base storage, and kept the same price.

Bust of the Year was savage; the Apple iPhone 16e got absolutely roasted.

Phone of the Year

The best of the best awards go to the iPhone 17, as per MKBHD. After years of playing catch-up on basics, Apple finally made a “complete” mainstream phone without jacking modern features while keeping the price unchanged.
