Philippines Enhances Sports Tourism Potential with New National Committee, Get the Details Here

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) shared their delight on the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency committee (NST-IAC) being approved by President Bongbong Marcos on November 4, 2025. This was formalized by Administrative Order No 38, which recognizes the Committee’s primary function in promoting the Philippines as a world-class destination in Sports Tourism.

With PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio as the Committee Chair, the NST-IAC’s primary goal is to synchronize the country’s initiatives in the expansion of Sports Tourism. Meanwhile, the Department of Tourism (DOT) will provide a representative who will act as the committee’s vice-chair. The Philippines will be able to capitalize on the sports tourism market which will benefit the industry of sports and tourism as a whole.

Mandates of the NST-IAC: Strengthening the Philippines as a Sports Tourism Hub
The newly formed NST-IAC is tasked with organizing, coordinating, and supervising all government initiatives aimed at developing, promoting, and sustaining sports tourism in the Philippines. This includes ensuring that the country is equipped to host world-class sports events and attract international tourists who are eager to combine their passion for sports with travel.

Sports Tourism: A Catalyst for Growth
As Chairman Gregorio pointed out, the creation of the NST-IAC is an important step towards boosting youth development, promoting regional growth, and creating new business opportunities. With sports tourism being a multibillion-dollar industry, Gregorio emphasized that the Philippines has the potential to establish itself as a leading sports hub in Southeast Asia. The country’s strategic location, favorable climate, and growing infrastructure make it an ideal destination for both international sporting events and travelers seeking sports-related experiences.

Gregorio also underscored the importance of collaboration between the Department of Tourism, the PSC, and local government units (LGUs). By working together, they can drive innovation and sustainability in sports tourism, ensuring long-term growth and global recognition.

Sports Tourism as a Driving Force for Regional Development
The development of sports tourism in the Philippines is not only about attracting large-scale international events but also about enhancing regional development. The NST-IAC will play a vital role in spreading the economic benefits of sports tourism beyond major cities such as Manila. By promoting sports tourism across various provinces, the committee aims to create job opportunities, boost local economies, and encourage investments in infrastructure. Local communities will benefit from increased tourism, including greater demand for accommodation, transportation, food services, and retail.

By tapping into the potential of regional areas, sports tourism could serve as a catalyst for community development, particularly in provinces that are still developing their tourism infrastructure. Sports events, from local marathons to international tournaments, could bring much-needed attention and resources to these regions, encouraging sustainable growth and providing new avenues for tourism-related businesses.

International Sporting Events as Key Drivers of Tourism
Globally, sports tourism has become a driving force for tourism growth. Major international sporting events, including the Olympics, World Cups, and regional tournaments like the SEA Games, attract millions of visitors and generate billions in revenue. The Philippines is positioning itself to become a key player in this industry, capitalizing on its sports culture and existing attractions.

With the NST-IAC in place, the Philippines is taking strategic steps to attract large-scale sporting events such as international basketball, boxing, and football tournaments, as well as high-profile marathons and triathlons. These events not only bring spectators but also athletes, coaches, media personnel, and sponsors from around the world, creating a ripple effect that boosts the hospitality and service sectors.

Moreover, sports tourism often attracts repeat visitors, as travelers return to experience different events and locations. This offers a unique opportunity to promote the Philippines as not just a one-time destination for sports, but as a place that hosts a variety of world-class events year after year.

Strengthening the Youth Sports and Tourism Connection
One of the key objectives of the NST-IAC is to enhance the connection between youth sports and tourism. The Philippines has a rich tradition of sporting talent, from boxing champions like Manny Pacquiao to basketball stars. Developing youth sports programs and hosting international youth sports competitions could generate significant tourism activity while helping to nurture future sporting stars. These events provide a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills, while also encouraging fans to travel to the Philippines to witness emerging talents.

Creating pathways for youth athletes and sports enthusiasts to engage with tourism through sports events can also foster a sense of community pride and national identity. This can result in increased domestic tourism as Filipinos travel across the country to support their local athletes, thereby boosting the local tourism economy and reinforcing the role of sports as an integral part of Filipino culture.

Building Partnerships and Infrastructure for a Sustainable Sports Tourism Ecosystem
As the NST-IAC gets underway, partnerships will be key to its success. The committee is expected to work closely with various sectors, including sports organizations, travel agencies, local governments, and the private sector. These partnerships will help to shape a sustainable sports tourism ecosystem in the Philippines, where collaboration, innovation, and a commitment to excellence are the driving forces.

Infrastructure development will also be crucial. Upgrading existing sports facilities, building new ones, and ensuring that transportation and accommodation options meet the needs of international visitors are all areas of focus for the committee. The Philippines must ensure that its venues are world-class, its services are of high quality, and that visitors have access to a safe and enjoyable experience during their stay.

Creating a Legacy for Future Generations of Athletes and Tourists
The establishment of the NST-IAC also opens the door to a new era in the Philippines’ tourism industry. By developing sports tourism, the country can create a lasting legacy that benefits both athletes and tourists for generations to come. The Philippine Sports Commission is not only looking to host events in the short term but also to build a foundation that will attract future sporting events, create jobs, and inspire young athletes for years to come.

A Bright Future for Sports Tourism in the Philippines

With the National Sports Tourism Inter-Agency Committee’s newfound purpose, the Philippines embarks on something special, spearheading the viability of an industry out of the intersection of sport and tourism, anticipated to run on the fuel of the country’s economically threatened communities. As the Committee builds on the initial construction of sports tourism, it seamlessly combines economic growth and cultural exchanges – striking a balance between the country’s reputation and prominence in Southeast Asia. It is the calm leadership efforts and planned integration of resources, along with the embrace of the country’s efforts and unregulated gambling, that promise the country to become the global resort destination of sports tourism, attracting a market demand that surpasses the expectations of the Philippines. As the nation’s sports businesses become more international and better organized, the country’s tourism sponsored by the global sporting events and athletes will grow relentlessly.
