Anders Lee to test NHL free agency after Islanders negotiations fall short

New York Islanders captain Anders Lee will officially test the unrestricted free-agent market after contract negotiations with the organization failed to produce an agreement. The decision ends months of discussions and opens the door for several contenders to pursue one of the top veteran forwards available.

TSN insider Pierre LeBrun reported the development on X after learning the two sides could not bridge the remaining gap.

β€œThe Islanders were informed this morning that captain Anders Lee is headed to the UFA market,” LeBrun wrote.

He added, β€œNot a decision that was taken lightly. The Isles improved their offer in late stages, but still not there.”

Despite the setback, LeBrun indicated the relationship has not completely ended.

β€œSo Lee heads to market. Door open to Isles as well while hearing from other teams tomorrow,” he wrote.

The contract talks reportedly stalled over term rather than annual salary, leaving the 36-year-old free to evaluate outside offers.

Shortly after LeBrun’s report, The Athletic’s Michael Russo identified one club expected to pursue Lee aggressively.

β€œI expect the #mnwild to have a lot of interest,” Russo wrote.

He also believes Lee will not rush into a decision.

β€œI do think Lee will take his time to examine the right team for his next stop, so he may not necessarily be a July 1 signing,” Russo said.

That patience makes sense. Lee remains one of the most respected leaders on the market and continues to provide reliable secondary scoring. He recorded 19 goals and 42 points while appearing in all 82 games last season.

Beyond the numbers, Lee still brings value around the net, on the power play and inside the dressing room. Those qualities become especially valuable for playoff contenders looking to strengthen their forward depth.

So, the Islanders face a difficult challenge. Replacing a longtime captain extends beyond replacing goals and assists. Leadership, experience and consistency are difficult to acquire through free agency.

For Lee, the market offers an opportunity to evaluate both contenders and familiar surroundings. Minnesota has already emerged as a logical fit, but several teams are expected to inquire. Unless negotiations with New York unexpectedly restart, one of the franchise’s longest-serving leaders appears ready to begin the next chapter of his NHL career.
