PETA sends message to Yankees’ Cam Schlittler after spider snafu

Cam Schlittler isn’t the first person to experience a case of arachnophobia. But when the New York Yankees pitcher found a spider in his locker at the team’s spring training facility March 15, he became the most famous for a day.

PETA noticed.

The Virginia-based animal-rights organization (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) sent a message to the Yankees pitcher two days after Schlittler called team security to help remove the spider.

According to Chris Kirschner of The Athletic on X, PETA said March 17 it is “rushing the team humane bug catchers to ensure that any future arachnid guests can be escorted outside safely and compassionately.”

Via Kirschner, PETA founder Ingrid Newkirk said, “spiders have a lot more to fear from us than we do from them, so the least we can do is show them a little kindness and consideration. PETA’s humane bug catcher makes relocating spiders a snap — no squishing, screaming, or security detail required — and we hope this useful device brings the Yankees’ pitcher some relief.”

A real update on this: PETA says it is "rushing the team humane bug catchers to ensure that any future arachnid guests can be escorted outside safely and compassionately."
