Samsung Galaxy Dark Mode looks off? Fix it with this easy trick

25 May 2026 at 23:37

After updating to One UI 8.5, some Samsung Galaxy users noticed an issue with Dark Mode in Google apps such as Gmail, Google Messages, and others. Usually, Dark Mode should look very dark with deep black backgrounds. But now, many users are seeing light gray or washed-out dark screens instead of real black.

While Samsung has not officially confirmed or addressed the issue yet, users have discovered a simple workaround that restores the expected Dark Mode appearance. The fix is using the Color Palette feature. This feature changes the overall colors of the phone system. When it is turned on, it can bring back proper Dark Mode in Google apps.

To use this fix, first press and hold on an empty space on your home screen. Then tap on β€œWallpaper and style.” After that, tap on β€œColor palette.” Turn it ON, choose any color you like, and then tap Apply.

With the issue, the screen looks brighter in dark mode, and text sometimes does not stand out clearly. The issue seems to have started after the One UI 8.5 update. Many people think it is caused by a small problem between Samsung’s system theme and Google’s Material You. This is why different Google apps are showing wrong or inconsistent dark colors.

After doing this fix, Google apps go back to normal Dark Mode. The background becomes darker again, closer to true black, and everything looks clearer and better to read. One Galaxy user, @saichandudodda, shared that this method worked and fixed the problem on their phone.

Until Samsung releases an official update, this Color Palette method is the easiest way to fix the Dark Mode issue and make your phone look normal again. Try it now!
