Samsung accelerates its HBM4 expansion
A new industry report suggests Samsung is accelerating its HBM4 expansion. The company has reportedly decided to operate Phase 2 of the P4 line at its Pyeongtaek campus for production of the 6th-gen High Bandwidth Memory.
South Korean media outlet Dailian reports that Samsung Electronics is expanding its HBM4 production. Pyeongtaek campusβs P4 line (Phase 2) will be established as a dedicated DRAM line for HBM4 supply.
HBM is an industry where large-scale mass production is difficult to start without customer verification. Samsungβs decision is interpreted to mean that customers have raised direct demand pressure and volume requests.
Earlier, Samsung considered establishing the P4 line as a Foundry dedicated to contract manufacturing. However, the latest change flips the script as the company has dedicated this space for DRAM production.
The Korean tech giant is operating reshuffles to chase the intensifying demand for AI-specific HBM memory chips. Itβs reported that the demand for HBM semiconductors has sharply increased since the beginning of the year.
In addition to Nvidia, industry giants such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft are also requiring HBM solutions. Recently, Nvidia shared good news for Samsung HBM4, and Broadcom approved the same for Google TPUs.
An industry official stated, βAs HBM demand is sharply increasing, production capacity is becoming important,β adding, βThis plan seems to be an effort to maximize the capacity to respond amidst intense demand pressure.β
