Tour de France Stage 9 winner: Mathieu van der Poel triumphs in late scramble
Mathieu van der Poel claimed the Stage 9 victory at the Tour de France on Sunday, July 12, the third stage win of his career.
The ride that took cyclists from Malemort to Ussel was shortened by 30km due to heat.
Tobias Johannessen and Tom Pidcock finished second and third, while Tadej Pogacar maintained his overall lead.
Van der Poel, who left last year's race due to pneumonia, came out on top on Sunday with a furious final push ahead of Johannessen, Pidcock (who overcome a mechanical issue) and Alex Baudin.
"I spent a lot of energy trying to keep the break alive with all the pressure from the bunch. The roads are horrible, head winds, and we fought for it and Iβm happy to finish it off," Van der Poel told TNT Sports after the stage.
Monday brings a rest day, and the race will continue on Tuesday with a mountainous 166.6-km ride from Aurillac to Le Lioran.
