Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy Z TriFold in the US, with a limited supply that is forcing enthusiasts to spend as much as $4,400.

Recently, Allison Johnson of TheVerge made a purchase: she spent $4,399 on eBay for a Galaxy Z TriFold in the US. It was primarily for review purposes, as Samsung has made the TriFold a rare device that’s not for purchase.

Samsung is indeed selling the Galaxy Z TriFold in select countries, but it’s quite difficult to own. Money isn’t everything; you need to have a TriFold in your hand, it requires massive luck, and that’s changing market dynamics.

Despite having purchased it on the gray market, the author is afraid to turn it on. The device isn’t letting her set up without a SIM. She notes that “Not that turning it on does much good. Whenever I tap “start” to set it up, a prompt to supply a “USIM” pops up and refuses to let me progress without one.

It’s a concerning situation as the author doesn’t find the TriFold credible enough to have a SIM due to the channel of purchase. The device was purchased from seller Moderntek through eBay, and that’s where the story began.

The seller has enough stock with a positive rating; selling the Galaxy Z TriFold for $4,399. It’s for the one who can spend any amount just to have a TriFold. However, purchasing from the gray market is not recommended.

The phone’s retail box also had a label slapped on it that reads “DO NOT ACCEPT IF SEAL IS BROKEN.” The box was sealed properly, but had clues that it had been opened somewhere for pre-activation purpose.

The TriFold didn’t trigger the setup window that Samsung phones usually do. Rather, an app prompt appeared demanding plenty of permissions. It appears to be a suspected app or malware, which is making the device unreliable.

The author spent nearly 1.5x the official price, so we don’t have to. The warning has also arrived so other fans won’t fall into the problem. Try finding out TriFold at Samsung Stores, don’t believe purchase from the gray market.
