Mom Of U.S. Hockey Hero Addresses Team's Viral Call With Donald Trump

Ellen Hughes is speaking out after her two sons on the U.S. men’s ice hockey team, golden goal-scoring hero Jack and his brother Quinn Hughes, were seen laughing in response to Donald Trump’s patronizing joke about having to invite the gold medal-winning women’s team to the nation’s capital.

Ellen Hughes, who played for the American women’s squad in the early ’90s before the sport hit the Olympic ice, was asked by NBC’s “Today” show how the president’s comments landed with her.

“Well, I think at the end of the day, it’s just about the country and the moment that these players, both the men and women, can bring so much unity to a group and to a country,” said Hughes, who is now a player development consultant for the women’s team. “People that cheered on that don’t watch hockey, people that have politics on one side or on the other side, and that’s all both the men’s team and the women’s team care about.”

Hughes went on to remark on the “synergy” between the two squads, both of whom made the undefeated journey to Olympic gold before ultimately taking down their Canadian rivals in overtime by the same score, 2-1.

“The way the women cheered on the men and the way the men cheered on the women — that’s what it’s all about,” she stressed.

“And the other things they cannot control. They care about humanity. They care about unity and they care about the country.”

Trump’s over-the-phone joke and the resulting locker-room laughter from the Hughes brothers and their teammates have sparked backlash in the days since, including from fans of the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

USA Hockey — which oversees both teams — later announced that the women’s squad turned down the White House’s invite to attend the president’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, citing scheduling conflicts.

The news led “Public Enemy” rapper Flavor Flav to invite the American women to a future ceremony in Las Vegas. The Team USA hype man said the women’s squad has since accepted his offer.

Trump’s plans for the men’s squad to attend his SOTU address appear to be coming to fruition, as several players shared photos aboard an Air Force jet on Tuesday.

Golden goal scorer Jack Hughes told the Daily Mail that the men’s team is excited to head to D.C. before adding, “Everything is so political. We’re athletes.”

He told the tabloid that the women, like the men, also have “busy schedules.”

“Everyone is giving us backlash for all the social media stuff today,” he said. “People are so negative out there, and they are just trying to find a reason to put people down and make something out of almost nothing.”

It remains unclear whether members of either team, as Trump pitched, would attend a White House ceremony that he eyed for Wednesday.

Such plans could conflict with the return of both NHL and PWHL hockey as teams are set to resume play on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively.

Team USA gold medal gear: Official 2026 USA Hockey Olympic champions apparel now available

The United States stunned Canada with a 2–1 overtime victory to win men’s Olympic hockey gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics, delivering one of the most memorable moments in modern U.S. hockey history. It marks the Americans’ first Olympic gold medal in men’s hockey since the legendary “Miracle on Ice” in 1980 and just the third in program history.

Fans can now commemorate this victory with the official Team USA champions gear now on Fanatics.

Jack Hughes Delivers Gold in Overtime

The Americans struck first when Matt Boldy scored just six minutes into the opening period, sending early energy through the U.S. bench. Canada answered late in the second period when Cale Makar tied the game, setting up a tense third period filled with near misses and elite defensive stands.

With regulation ending 1–1, the gold medal game moved to sudden-death 3-on-3 overtime.

Just 1:41 into OT, Jack Hughes became an Olympic hero. After receiving a pass from Zach Werenski, Hughes ripped a shot past Canada’s goaltender to secure gold and ignite a celebration that will live in U.S. hockey lore.

Connor Hellebuyck’s 41-Save Masterpiece

At the heart of the victory was Connor Hellebuyck, who delivered one of the greatest goaltending performances in Olympic history. Hellebuyck stopped 41 shots against a relentless Canadian attack, including multiple breakaway saves and crucial penalty-kill stops that kept the Americans alive through regulation.

Without his composure and elite shot-stopping ability, this game likely never reaches overtime.

Instead, it became a defining chapter in the USA–Canada rivalry.

A Golden Olympic Sweep

The victory also completed an Olympic sweep for the United States, as the U.S. women’s team captured gold earlier in the Games. The 2026 Winter Olympics will now be remembered as a defining moment for USA Hockey across both programs.

For fans, this wasn’t just another win; it was redemption, rivalry, and history wrapped into one unforgettable finish.

Viral videos show Team USA’s booze-filled Olympic Gold Medal celebration in Miami

The USA men’s hockey team did not waste any time celebrating their Olympic gold medal. After beating Canada in the championship game, Jack Hughes and his teammates found themselves at E11EVEN nightclub in Miami late Monday night.

The team had just flown back from Milan that same afternoon, but their landing spot was not part of the original plan. A brutal winter storm forced their flight to divert from New York to Florida instead.

The change of scenery did not stop anything. Hundreds of people packed into the club to join the celebration, and it turned into exactly what one would expect after winning gold.

Champagne bottles started popping, and players sprayed it across the room. Fans got soaked right alongside the team. The whole place turned into a loud, messy continuation of a win that already felt historic.

According to the Daily Mail, the night was not cheap. Reports say the celebration ran up a $150,000 tab at the bar. The team went heavy on E11EVEN Vodka, Armand de Brignac champagne, and Dame Más tequila. Bottles kept coming.

Things escalated when players climbed onstage and started pouring drinks directly into fans’ mouths below. Nothing about it was low-key.

The receipts backed up what the videos showed by the time the night wrapped up.

Gold medal game early Sunday morning. Miami blowout by Monday night. State of the Union address on Tuesday. That is the stretch USA Hockey has been navigating since Hughes buried the overtime winner.

There has been no breathing room, just constant movement from one city to the next, one moment to another.
