A look at the Peoria Chiefs roster, top ranked prospects and more as Opening Day arrives

PEORIA β€” The Peoria Chiefs open the 2026 Midwest League season on Friday with a three-game series at Cedar Rapids and a roster stocked with intriguing prospects from the parent club St. Louis Cardinals.

The high-A team includes five members of the Cardinals Top 30 Prospects, according to mlb.com.

Among them are catcher Rainiel Rodriguez (No. 3), RHP Tanner Franklin (No. 11), RHP Yhoiker Fajardo (No. 13), OF Tai Peete (No. 18) and INF Jesus Baez (No. 20).

Rodriguez, who just turned 19 in January, is also ranked No. 35 among all baseball prospects in the mlb.com Top 100 list. He is one of just 22 players on that top 100 list aged 19 or younger, and one of just six players among baseball's top 57 prospects at the high-A level.

Peoria Chiefs catcher Rainiel Rodriguez is the No. 3 prospect in the parent club St. Louis Cardinals organization and No. 57 in MLB's top 100 ranked prospects.

Peoria has 30 active players on the roster, of which 19 made appearances with the Chiefs last season. The roster includes players from the United States, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico and South Korea.

Franklin is a 6-foot-5, 225-pound right-hander taken by the Cardinals in the 2025 MLB Draft (72nd overall, competitive balance pick). He is Peoria's Opening Day pitcher at Cedar Rapids.

Fajardo was acquired by the Cards from the Red Sox in the Wilson Contreras trade in December.

Peete was Seattle's first-round pick in 2023 and came over to St. Louis in a January trade for Brendan Donovan.

Baez was one of three pieces in a package the Cardinals acquired for the trade of right-hander Ryan Helsley to the Mets in late July 2025.

The Chiefs 44th season opens with a 6:05 p.m. first pitch at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Cedar Rapids on Friday. The game is broadcast online free with Chiefs voice Larry Larson on the call via PeoriaChiefs.com. It can be seen online via MiLB.TV and via the Bally Sports Live App.

Peoria will stage its 2026 home opener at Dozer Park with a 6:35 p.m. game against the South Bend Cubs on Tuesday.

Nick Lodolo exits early, but Daytona Tortugas beat Jupiter on Opening Day

DAYTONA BEACH β€” The Daytona Tortugas christened their renovated home April 2 with an opening-night victory.

Jacob Friend and Bernard Moon launched solo home runs, and a trio of Tortugas pitchers combined to toss a three-hitter in a 4-2 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Thursday's opener featured a tantalizing pitching matchup between starters on rehab assignments with their respective clubs: Cincinnati Reds left-hander Nick Lodolo and Miami Marlins top prospect Thomas White.

Daytona Tortugas pitcher Nick Lodolo (40) pitches the ball on Opening Day game against the Jupiter Hammerheads, April 2, 2026, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Lodolo retired Jupiter's first eight hitters in order with four strikeouts, but exited with a blister after throwing just 40 of his scheduled 60-65 pitches. The 28-year-old has spent time on the injured list each of the last three seasons due to blister issues.

"Electric, a ton of fun to catch," said Friend, the Tortugas' starting catcher. "Whenever you can have a guy like that come down and be with us so guys can watch and learn, it's always fun."

Reds manager Terry Francona said Lodolo was set to make his 2026 debut during the team's April 6-9 series in Miami, barring a setback.

White, the No. 1 prospect in Miami's farm system, struck out four in 2β…” innings but served up a towering home run to Friend over the brand-new player development facility beyond the right field wall.

Daytona Tortugas’ Jacob Friend (3) hits a home run against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Opening Day, April 2, 2026, at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

Luis De La Cruz entered in White's place and promptly committed three balks, allowing Ichiro Cano to trot around the bases and score Daytona's second run. Moon belted a solo homer to center in the fourth to give the Tortugas a 3-0 advantage.

Jupiter broke up the shutout bid in the fifth when Victor Ortega gapped a ground-rule double underneath the wall in right center.

Arnaldo Lantigua brought home the Tortugas' final run of the night with a bloop single to shallow left, off the glove of Hammerheads shortstop Andrew Salas. Daytona scratched out six hits, but struck out 14 times against Jupiter pitching, eight alone from left-hander Nate Payne.

Daytona will face Jupiter at 6:35 p.m. each of the next two days before embarking on a six-game trip to Lakeland after Easter.

"It's a good, close-knit group," Tortugas manager Ricky Gutierrez said. "I've been getting to know them. When I got to Arizona, I watched them play and noticed that real quick. They play hard. We pitched well. As you saw, we play very good defense.

"It's hard to pinpoint right now early in the season, but the sky's the limit. There's so much talent on this team, and they are hungry. They want to play as a team. To have that at a young age is really good."
