Liverpool could sign Mohammed Kudus or Johan Bakayoko after Anthony Gordon agreed a move to Barcelona.

The two forwards have been previously linked with Merseyside switches in prior transfer windows.

With the Reds in clear need of a minimum of two wingers (and, ideally, an additional versatile forward), perhaps interest could be reignited.

ChatGPT recommends Mohammed Kudus & Johan Bakayoko

Out of morbid curiosity, I wanted to know which players an LLM would recommend as an alternative to Gordon this summer.

Truth be told, most of the suggestions were pretty disappointing:

  • Yan Diomande (he’s a first-choice target for the wings, not the Anthony Gordon-type of player we want as an additional utility option)
  • Bradley Barcola (see above)
  • Johan Bakayoko (previously linked but doesn’t have a significant history playing centrally in a front three)
  • Bryan Mbeumo (errrrr… forgetting something, Chat?)
  • Mohammed Kudus (go on…)
  • Nico Williams (same as Bakayoko and on a stupidly long contract)
  • Takefusa Kubo (some experience playing centrally… emphasis on some)

It’s fair to say we’ve not been left with the most ideal profiles on the market, but I am a fan of Kudus, and I’ve always been curious about Bakayoko’s potential.

So, let’s take a closer look at what either option could offer Arne Slot.

Viable alternatives to Anthony Gordon?

It’s perhaps a little harsh to label Johan Bakayoko a “flop” after one difficult campaign in the Bundesliga.

But it’s rather telling that Yan Diomande, who has been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool this summer, has been favoured on the right wing.

Yan Diomande stats Johan Bakayoko stats
36 games (2,724 minutes) 22 games (892 minutes)
13 goals 3 goals
10 assists 0 assists
118.43 minutes per goal contribution 297.33 minutes per goal contribution
0.26 non-penalty xG (per 90) 0.24 non-penalty xG (per 90)
1.93 shots per 90 2.79 shots per 90
7.09 touches in opposition box 4.89 touches in opposition box per 90

* Yan Diomande and Johan Bakayoko’s stats in the Bundesliga in the 2025/26 season (Transfermarkt/Fotmob)

To be completely fair to Bakayoko, he’s had some injury struggles this term to contend with. And while there are some encouraging underlying stats to suggest the Belgian could be effective with more regular minutes in the right setup, there’s more than enough evidence to suggest Liverpool would be well-placed favouring his Ivorian teammate as a first-choice wing target.

And with only two appearances centrally, I’m just not convinced that the 23-year-old is the right alternative to Barcelona-bound Anthony Gordon.

So how about Kudus?

It would be somewhat unfair to judge Kudus entirely off the back of his season spent with a rather spineless, clueless Tottenham side in 2025/26.

Despite that crutch, however, the 25-year-old winger has managed to post some impressive dribbling numbers – even as his numbers relating to output have nosedived.

Mohammed Kudus stats
26 games (1,921 minutes)
3 goals
6 assists
213.44 minutes
0.11 non-penalty xG (per 90)
1.51 shots per 90
3.32 touches in opposition box

* Mohammed Kudus’s stats in the Premier League (2025/26) (Fotmob/Transfermarkt)

The big thing with Kudus, of course, is the fact he’s made 51 senior appearances in a central role.

That, surely, has to offer some attraction to the notion of signing the player this summer. Whether Spurs would be prepared to make a deal, of course, having signed the 25-year-old last summer, remains to be seen.

But I’d be far more inclined to push for Mohammed Kudus over Johan Bakayoko, fee depending.

Liverpool interested in stunning breakout Premier League talent but £100m price-tag is alarming

29 May 2026 at 22:38

Liverpool and Manchester United are among several Premier League clubs reportedly interested in Eli Junior Kroupi.

That’s the word coming from a reputable source on X, with both the Merseysiders and Red Devils understood to be keen to further bolster their respective forward lines this summer.

The Cherries star has enjoyed a strong breakout campaign with Andoni Iraola’s side, registering 13 goals in 33 Premier League games.

Which Premier League clubs are keeping an eye on Junio Kroupi?

19 years of age and already 13 top-flight goals in one of the most challenging leagues in world football. Perhaps the most challenging across Europe’s top five, given the stylistic shift we’ve all witnessed in 2025/26.

Regardless, it’s fair to say that Liverpool and Manchester United aren’t Kroupi’s sole suitors. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City – among a battalion of Europe’s elite clubs – are keeping a watching brief on the talented teenager.

With Bournemouth having slapped a £100m price-tag on the youngster’s shoulders, according to the Times (via Football Today), however, it’s difficult to see a move happen this summer.

At the very least, it’s a firm hands-off warning from the club.

Why should Liverpool and Co. be interested?

Kroupi’s numbers are pretty impressive for a 19-year-old, but he particularly stands out as a front-footed, aggressive attacker.

He wins possession in the final third 1.07 times per game per 90, according to Fotmob, which ranks him in the 95th percentile compared to his positional peers. He’s rarely dribbled past and commits fouls at a rate of 1.44 per 90.

From the perspective of sides willing to play an aggressive pressing game, the Bournemouth star would appear ready to fit like a glove.

Of course, if we’re all being honest with ourselves, there are more ready-made players you can sign in the region of £100m.

Certainly, I’d be much more inclined to pursue the likes of Yan Diomande and Bradley Barcola, the latter of whom is already a Champions League winner.

On my end, as far as Liverpool’s transfer window is concerned, £100m splashed on Kroupi would be absolute insanity.

I like the profile, but we should be doing a lot better with £100m than signing a clearly overpriced young forward.

Hugo Ekitike just said what everyone’s really thinking about Ibrahima Konate decision

29 May 2026 at 21:44

Hugo Ekitike appeared to jokingly plead with Ibrahima Konate to take Liverpool’s contract offer.

Ultimately, however, it appears that there will be only one direction of travel at present, with reports confirming the centre-back will leave the Reds on a free transfer this summer.

Could Ibrahima Konate u-turn on his contract decision?

Ekitike was spotted leaving this comment on the former RB Leipzig star’s Instagram account“Sign brother.”

I wouldn’t personally take this as an indication that the French centre-half could yet change his mind.

Liverpool aren’t ones to bend and bend and then bend some more to keep a talent in the squad – even if it will quite evidently hurt their squad planning for the next season.

But there’s no question that there will be a considerable desire within the squad to keep hold of such a key player.

Liverpool fans will agree with Hugo Ekitike

Speaking as an ardent Liverpool fan, I’m of the firm belief that parting ways with Ibou Konate ahead of a pivotal summer window is, quite frankly, bloody stupid.

Now, we appreciate that the club’s intention has been to sign the Frenchman on a new contract. Allegedly, they’ve even supplied the defender and his team with a pretty good deal.

But a failure to manage the situation, and identify potential opportunities in the market (like Bournemouth’s Marcos Senesi), means Liverpool may very well be forced to spend money on a replacement.

And we’re not talking about replacing Wataru Endo or an injury-prone Joe Gomez. Konate is, objectively, a £50m-60m footballer. So, him signing a new contract would have very much been in the club’s best interests.

Unfortunately for Liverpool, the No.5 doesn’t believe that signing the deal on the table is in his best interests.

Liverpool can replace Ibrahima Konate instantly with £43.2m bargain after Sky Sports update

29 May 2026 at 19:20

Ibrahima Konate has decided to leave Liverpool on a free transfer this summer owing to an impasse over wages.

The France international, whose terms expire at the end of June, had reportedly been made ‘a very good offer’ to extend his stay on Merseyside.

However, the financials on the table were not enough to convince the 27-year-old that his future remains at L4.

Liverpool lose Ibrahima Konate over wages

Alex Crook over at talkSPORT reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Konate and Liverpool could not come to an agreement over wage demands.

Worth noting Liverpool made Konate a very good offer to stay but ultimately they could not agree terms due to his wage demands. https://t.co/mgl18ydPvT

While Liverpool should be applauded for sticking firm to their guns on wage structure, I struggle to see this as anything other than another serious failing from the boffins at the AXA centre.

The Reds are heading into their most critical summer window yet in recent years and now need to add a new centre-back to an already burgeoning shopping list.

A shopping list that will, as has already been made clear in prior reporting, be perhaps slightly constrained by a more limited budget (in comparison to the spending spree of 2025).

Not ideal, Liverpool. Really not ideal.

How much was Konate expecting to earn?

With Konate already on a reported £150,000-a-week (Capology), and Liverpool reported to have offered the centre-half a ‘very good offer’, we have to wonder at the kind of money he wanted.

Bear in mind that both Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike are on £200,000-a-week, and Andy Robertson maxed out at £160,000-a-week.

Does the Frenchman deserve to be on that kind of money?

We’ll have to await further details on Ibrahima Konate’s specific demands.

Marcos Senesi is a no-go but Nico Schlotterbeck is available

Liverpool have painted themselves into a bit of a corner here, haven’t they?

They can’t afford to spend a huge chunk of change on a centre-half, given the extensive surgery that needs to take place from the midfield up to the forward line.

But I personally find it unfathomable that they could start the season with newbie Jeremy Jacquet partnering Virgil van Dijk.

I think there’s a big ceiling Liverpool will take advantage of, but it’s an awful lot to put on a young talent (the Frenchman turns 21 this July) in his first season in English football.

With that in mind, and budget-depending, Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck could be an excellent solution this summer. If it’s indeed the case that the Reds can activate a €50m-60m [£43.2m-51.9m] release clause – as Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg suggested is an option – it’s probably the best move they can do in that price range.

I don’t think they can afford not to, if Richard Hughes and Co. feel they’ve got the wiggle room in the budget to make it work.
