UAE’s Investment in Africa’s Tourism to Create Thousands of Jobs and Expand Opportunities, Here’s All You Need to Know

The UAE has revealed a $6 billion investment aimed at revolutionizing Africa’s travel and hospitality market. Such an investment is expected to produce approximately 70,000 new job opportunities, solidifying Africa’s place as one of the quickest growing regions in the global tourism economy.

The announcement was made in Dubai during the UAE Africa Tourism Investment Summit 2025, which was held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This summit aimed at unveiling new investment opportunities and aligning stakeholders on the priorities for Africa’s tourism, infrastructure, and aviation, and was attended by high level government officials which included investors and government executives.

A Strategic Investment in Africa’s Booming Tourism Sector

Africa’s tourism industry has become one of the fastest-growing globally, driven by the continent’s diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and unique heritage. The UAE’s $6 billion investment is set to accelerate this growth by focusing on key areas such as aviation, tourism infrastructure, logistics, and digital innovation. These investments will not only create thousands of new jobs but also improve the travel experience for visitors, enhance connectivity between African countries, and promote sustainable tourism initiatives that benefit local communities and the environment.

Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, UAE Minister of Economy and Tourism, highlighted the importance of leveraging Africa’s unique tourism assets, which include coastal resorts, pristine beaches, historical landmarks, and wildlife reserves. With the continent’s growing appeal to international travelers, the UAE sees this as a prime opportunity for investment and expansion. The move will also strengthen ties between the UAE and Africa, creating a gateway for further collaboration and sustainable development across various tourism sectors.

Key Focus Areas for Investment: Aviation, Infrastructure, and Digital Innovation

The $6 billion investment plan will focus on several key areas that are essential to the long-term growth of Africa’s tourism industry:

  1. Aviation: One of the key pillars of the investment is to enhance air connectivity across Africa. Improving regional and international flights, expanding airport infrastructure, and increasing the availability of direct routes will make it easier for tourists to visit African destinations. This will also foster greater economic integration within the continent, facilitating the movement of people, goods, and services.
  2. Tourism Infrastructure: The UAE’s investment will be used to build and upgrade critical tourism infrastructure such as hotels, resorts, transportation systems, and visitor centers. By improving these facilities, Africa will be able to cater to an increasing number of visitors while offering them a more comfortable and efficient travel experience.
  3. Logistics and Supply Chains: The development of logistics networks and supply chain infrastructure is vital for the efficient movement of tourists and goods across the continent. The UAE’s investment will support the growth of these systems, which will be key in ensuring that Africa can handle a growing influx of international travelers while minimizing logistical bottlenecks.
  4. Digital Innovation: The UAE is also focused on enhancing the digital transformation of Africa’s tourism sector. This includes the development of smart tourism platforms, online booking systems, and digital marketing campaigns that can help promote African destinations to a wider audience. By integrating technology into the tourism experience, Africa can offer modern and seamless travel solutions to both international and local visitors.

Collaboration Between the UAE and African Governments

A central element of the summit was a ministerial roundtable, which gathered ministers from over 20 African nations to discuss the future of tourism in Africa. During the roundtable, a joint statement was issued outlining plans for greater collaboration between the UAE and African governments in advancing tourism infrastructure, aviation, and sustainable growth.

The statement emphasized shared goals such as improving tourism services, increasing air connectivity, and supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) within the tourism sector. The UAE’s commitment to green growth and inclusive development was also highlighted as an essential part of the investment strategy, aiming to ensure that tourism growth is environmentally responsible and beneficial to local communities.

The UAE’s expertise in sustainable tourism and digital innovation will help African nations develop tourism strategies that align with global best practices while maintaining cultural and environmental integrity. The partnership between the UAE and African countries is expected to create a more resilient and sustainable tourism industry that benefits both tourists and host communities.

FHS Africa 2026: Shaping the Future of Africa’s Hospitality Industry

The UAE’s investment is just the beginning of a broader strategy to develop Africa’s tourism sector. The Future Hospitality Summit Africa (FHS Africa) 2026 will be a key event in the coming years, bringing together industry leaders, policymakers, and investors to discuss the future of hospitality investment in Africa. The summit will provide a platform for further deal-making, the sharing of ideas, and the development of new partnerships that will shape the continent’s tourism landscape for years to come.

Roy Bannister, Head of Strategic Partnerships for Africa at The Bench, which organized the summit, emphasized that FHS Africa will be instrumental in turning the $6 billion investment plan into actionable projects. “We will focus on transforming the framework into tangible projects and opportunities that will deliver lasting impact for Africa’s tourism economy,” Bannister said.

The FHS Africa event will continue to foster partnerships between the UAE and African governments, helping to accelerate the development of hospitality infrastructure, tourism products, and destination marketing. With the $6 billion investment as a foundation, FHS Africa aims to position Africa as a leading destination for both regional and international travelers.

Impact on Tourists: Enhanced Travel Experience Across Africa

For tourists, the UAE’s $6 billion investment will significantly enhance the travel experience across Africa. The development of tourism infrastructure will make it easier for travelers to visit popular destinations, including Africa’s beach resorts, national parks, and historical landmarks. Improved air connectivity will allow tourists to seamlessly travel between African countries, increasing the number of multi-destination trips and making it easier to explore the continent’s diverse offerings.

Moreover, the focus on digital innovation will improve the online booking process, create smart travel apps, and enhance tourist information services. As a result, visitors will experience greater convenience, better access to information, and a smoother overall trip. With the sustainable tourism initiatives underway, travelers can also enjoy their vacations with peace of mind, knowing that their visits are contributing to environmental conservation and local community development.

A Transformative Investment for Africa’s Tourism Future

Africa’s tourism sector is an estimated $6 billion investment from Ubuntu Hospitality Group. In conjunction with developed investments in transportation, groundbreaking sustainability and digital initiatives, projected returns on investments in tourism through the hospitality group focus on value for travelers and the socio-economic viability for the African community members. Investments developed in tourism with African jurisdictions shaped the efforts of the African Union on the continent’s sustainability tourism economy. Forecasting the initiatives of the FHS Africa, unique tourism activities positioned the continent economically and environmentally responsible. The continent is strengthening projected returns on responsible tourism through value initiatives for African community members.

By integrating such diverse elements into single developments, the Maldives is working to create a more resilient and sustainable tourism model, one that reduces reliance on traditional short-stay vacationers.

The townships will also serve as a long-term solution for attracting high-value investors and creating employment opportunities across multiple sectors. This initiative will not only draw luxury tourists but also encourage families, remote workers, and long-term residents to settle in the Maldives, diversifying the country’s tourism market and economy.

Economic Diversification and Long-Term Benefits

The Maldives has long been a top destination for high-end island resorts, but with tourism trends shifting toward more integrated, long-term stays, the government has recognized the need to diversify its tourism industry. By focusing on large-scale developments that include healthcare, education, and wellness, the Maldives is creating a tourism economy that is not just focused on short-term leisure but also on long-term, value-driven experiences. This shift is expected to enhance the country’s economic resilience and make its tourism sector more adaptable to global changes.

Developers of these townships will receive attractive incentives, such as a 5% income tax rate for the first ten years, with this rate rising to 10% for the following decade. However, these incentives will only apply to projects that meet specific requirements, such as including educational facilities, healthcare infrastructure, and renewable energy initiatives. This approach ensures that the developments contribute directly to the nation’s broader strategic goals, including the transition to sustainable energy, the development of local skills, and the generation of long-term economic growth.

Eligibility and Criteria for Sustainable Township Projects

The proposed amendments to the SEZ Act aim to establish a clear and transparent framework for these new developments, defining eligibility criteria and investment thresholds. To qualify for the incentives, projects must demonstrate a commitment to sustainability, integrating renewable energy systems, green building technologies, and eco-friendly practices. Additionally, the focus on providing healthcare and educational infrastructure ensures that the projects benefit both the tourism industry and local communities by improving access to essential services and creating opportunities for residents.

These townships will focus on high-value investments that have a lasting impact on the Maldives’ economy. With developments exceeding $500 million in value, the projects will generate significant employment opportunities and contribute to the growth of local businesses. By ensuring that large-scale investments meet sustainability, health, and education goals, the Maldives is positioning itself as a forward-thinking destination that attracts both short-term visitors and long-term residents.

Impact on Tourism: Expanding Beyond Traditional Resorts

While the Maldives is globally recognized for its luxury resorts and pristine beaches, the new Sustainable Townships are designed to broaden the country’s tourism offerings. Global tourism trends are shifting toward integrated, mixed-use developments that combine leisure, wellness, and long-term stays. The Maldives is aligning itself with this shift by introducing townships that blend traditional resort experiences with lifestyle amenities, creating a more holistic travel experience.

For tourists, the new developments will offer not only luxury and relaxation but also opportunities for cultural engagement, wellness retreats, medical tourism, and educational experiences. These features will cater to a broader range of visitors, from wellness-focused travelers to families and digital nomads seeking a more permanent or extended stay in the Maldives.

Positioning the Maldives as a Global Leader in Sustainable Tourism

The Maldives’ focus on integrating sustainability into its tourism development is expected to set a global standard for eco-friendly luxury tourism. With a growing global focus on responsible travel and environmental impact, the Maldives is responding by creating destinations that prioritize sustainability, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship. By offering a blend of high-end tourism experiences and eco-conscious living, the country is positioning itself as a leader in sustainable tourism.

The Maldives’ commitment to sustainable tourism is not just about attracting environmentally conscious travelers but also about ensuring that the tourism industry benefits local communities, protects the environment, and contributes to the country’s long-term economic prosperity. By embracing green building practices, renewable energy, and responsible tourism, the Maldives is setting an example for other destinations looking to balance luxury with sustainability.

Building Partnerships for Long-Term Tourism Growth

To achieve the vision of these Sustainable Townships, the Maldives government is building strong partnerships with global investors, developers, and sustainability experts. The projects are expected to attract international capital while also fostering collaboration with local businesses and stakeholders. This will ensure that the developments are in line with local cultural values, environmental standards, and the long-term needs of the country’s tourism sector.

A Key Element of the Maldives’ Vision 2040 Strategy

The introduction of Sustainable Townships aligns with the Maldives’ Vision 2040 strategy, which emphasizes economic diversification, social development, and environmental sustainability. These initiatives are central to the country’s future growth, providing a foundation for long-term tourism success that goes beyond the traditional resort model. As the Maldives continues to innovate in the tourism sector, these townships will play a key role in enhancing the country’s global competitiveness and appeal.

A Sustainable and Inclusive Future for Maldives Tourism

The Maldives is reshaping the future of its economy with the integration of Sustainable Townships as part of its tourism development. Incorporating eco-friendly touring, living, healthcare, schooling and renewable energy, the Maldives hopes to become an attractive destination for tourists and permanent residents. Integrated Townships will provide new models for evolving tourism practices for future economies. With self-sustaining tourism systems in place, environmentally and socially, the Maldives will be ready to handle the future of tourism. The Maldives confidently meets the new world order in tourism with innovation and inclusivity.

Sharjah Invites Young Innovators to Transform Tourism with New Hackathon, Here’s All You Need to Know

The Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority (SCTDA) partnered with the American University of Sharjah (AUS) and launched Sharjah Tourism Innovation Hackathon 2025. This Hackathon served as the 2025 Sharjah International Travel & Tourism Forum (SITTF) pre-activities. The Forum’s theme is “Innovative & Sustainable Solutions in Technology for the Future of Tourism” and promotes the use of innovative technologies in sustainable tourism. It runs from November 1-2, 2025, at the AUS Main Building. This Hackathon aims at channeling the innovation, creativity, and collaboration starts within the tourism sector.

In total, 500 students from 29 UAE universities participated, with 80 finalists from 11 universities proposing industry-ready smart sustainable tourism solutions. This is in line with Sharjah’s vision of becoming a global tourism hub and empowering young people with ideas that will transform the industry.

Empowering Young Innovators: Tourism Solutions of Tomorrow

Over two days, teams of students tackled complex briefs related to sustainable tourism, innovation, and smart city technologies. The hackathon provided participants with an opportunity to move from problem definition to deployable solutions, including working prototypes, application designs, data-driven insights, and video pitches. These solutions aimed to address key issues within Sharjah’s tourism landscape and beyond, using technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and blockchain to improve the travel experience for visitors and businesses alike.

The judging panel, consisting of both academic and industry leaders, evaluated the final submissions based on their clarity, practicality, relevance to Sharjah’s tourism needs, scalability, and innovative use of technology. This hands-on, real-world approach allowed students to apply their academic knowledge in a meaningful way, and many of their ideas are expected to have a tangible impact on the future of tourism in Sharjah and the broader UAE.

First Place Winner: Gamified Tourism Experience with ‘Sharjah Quest’

The first-place prize went to the team “Hayyakum” from AUS, who created “Sharjah Quest,” an augmented reality-powered mobile adventure designed to engage visitors and encourage them to explore Sharjah’s cultural and historical sites. The app allows tourists to collect digital stamps, unlock mascots, and follow curated itineraries that guide them to local landmarks and businesses.

The team, comprising Mahmoud Darwish, Amr Mohi Aldeen, Mohamad Dabbagh, and Afif Zughayer, designed the app with a focus on inclusivity and local engagement. The game-based model spreads foot traffic, increases the time tourists spend in local areas, and provides real-time guidance to encourage visits to smaller neighborhood businesses. The system’s goal is to support the UAE’s Vision 2031 by integrating culture and sustainability into tourism.

“The beauty of Sharjah Quest lies in its ability to turn the city into an interactive game, creating an experience where every stop is a story, and every visit creates value,” said team member Mahmoud Darwish. This innovative approach not only enhances the tourist experience but also contributes to the local economy by supporting small and medium-sized enterprises in the area.

Second Place Winner: Coral Reef Health Monitoring System

The second-place award was claimed by team “Nomad,” consisting of Rana Gharaibeh, Halla Daas, Osama Ali, and Moustafa Mughrabi, who presented a pioneering solution for coral reef preservation. Their project involves using underwater vibrations to monitor and maintain the health of Sharjah’s coral reefs, positioning the emirate as a sustainable and eco-friendly tourism destination.

By integrating cutting-edge technology with environmental conservation, the project aims to protect Sharjah’s marine life while enhancing the region’s tourism appeal. With marine tourism becoming increasingly popular, this initiative ensures that visitors can experience Sharjah’s vibrant oceans while contributing to their preservation. The team’s efforts to highlight Sharjah’s commitment to sustainable tourism made their project a standout solution for the future of coastal tourism.

Third Place Winner: Unified Accessibility Platform for All Travelers

Team “Trail/s” from Ajman University, including Jon Zaccary Regala, Nouran Talal, Samia Bayoumi, and Maryam Al Shanqiti, won third place with their concept for a unified accessibility platform aimed at improving travel experiences for people with disabilities. The platform integrates tourism, law, and biomedical innovation to provide accessible travel recommendations, virtual tour guides, and support for assistive technologies.

The platform’s goal is to ensure that all travelers, regardless of ability, can explore the UAE with confidence and comfort. With the increasing importance of accessible tourism, this project reflects the growing need for destinations to cater to a diverse range of travelers. The team’s solution promises to make Sharjah a more inclusive and accessible destination for all visitors, enhancing its appeal as a family-friendly and accessible tourism hub.

Fostering Collaboration: Engaging with Industry Experts and Mentors

The Sharjah Tourism Innovation Hackathon was not only a competition but also an opportunity for students to engage with mentors and industry professionals, gaining valuable insights into the tourism and hospitality sectors. Participants had the chance to collaborate with experienced professionals, enhancing their understanding of real-world challenges and how to apply innovative solutions to solve them.

Dr. Salah Brahimi, Vice Chancellor for External Relations at AUS, emphasized the importance of connecting student innovation directly with Sharjah’s tourism priorities. The collaboration between the SCTDA, AUS, and mentors from various industries allowed the hackathon to become a significant platform for knowledge exchange and the development of practical solutions that can be implemented in the tourism sector.

Sharjah’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism and Innovation

The hackathon highlighted the SCTDA’s dedication to fostering a culture of innovation and sustainability within Sharjah’s tourism industry. By engaging young minds in solving real-world tourism challenges, the SCTDA is helping to build a more resilient, sustainable, and forward-thinking tourism ecosystem in Sharjah. The initiatives developed through this hackathon will contribute to the long-term growth of the city’s tourism sector, ensuring that it remains competitive on the global stage.

The Future of Tourism in Sharjah: A Vision for Growth

Looking ahead, Sharjah continues to invest in innovation and tourism development, positioning itself as a leading destination in the UAE. The successful launch of the Sharjah Tourism Innovation Hackathon marks just one step in the city’s ongoing efforts to diversify its tourism offerings and promote sustainable, high-quality travel experiences. The ideas generated during the hackathon, from gamified tourism apps to eco-friendly initiatives, provide a glimpse into the future of travel in Sharjah, a city where culture, sustainability, and technology intersect.

With initiatives like the Tourism Innovation Hackathon, Sharjah is strengthening its position as a global tourism hub, attracting visitors from around the world who seek unique, meaningful, and sustainable travel experiences. As the tourism sector continues to evolve, Sharjah is committed to staying at the forefront of innovation, ensuring that the future of tourism in the city is both inclusive and sustainable.

Shaping the Future of Tourism in Sharjah
